Thing is it was during the most boring portion of it all - when they introduce the countries - who gives a shit - introduce the US then just let everyone else walk in.

You know every one of us would be doing the exact same thing.

As a Chinese American and a person who visited Beijing this time last year -- I feel I have to defend a few things being said.  Granted some of it is just joking, I just want to point out a few things.

The "slaves" comment -- I think you guys fail to realize how prideful the Chinese people are.  The performers are honored to represent their country and show that China is a force and will continue to grow.  They dedicated 10 months of their lives to a 30 second performance piece.

Also, the Chinese are very proud of their heritage, and the Opening Ceremonies was merely a blip of the rich culture that we have.

Yes, China has some human rights issues, but that doesn't belittle the fact that they put on a hell of a show and that London Olympics Opening Ceremony will be a significant step below this performance.

Just my $.02.

DUDE, you suck at defending your people. Let me try. My wife is 25 percent Chinese so here we go.

Yes China has a troubled past and they still have a lot of human rights violations problems to overcome. But this is a country that has progressed tremendously over the last 50 years. They have worked towards opening themselves up to the world community.

But you can't expect a country with more than 1 BILLION people to swing to unadultered freedom in a few months. They have been isolationist and closed off for nearly 500 years.

Which is a good thing for all Americans because you would not be living in the type of America you currently live in had they been an expansionist country like all of Europe. They would have pwnt the world a long time ago if they wanted to.

That was one of the most visually impressive displays I've ever seen.

Edit: These things always get weird though

Edit: Chinaman is not the preferred nomenclature.

Agree. It was pretty sweet.

politics, money spent et al aside, the artistic portion of this program was one of the most incredible visual displays ive ever seen. the near pinpoint precision from that many people was beyond amazing. whatever else you have to say, vwp, China. The guy who came up with this is a freakin' genius.

I'm confused -- I'm defending it from the haters who are saying how bad China is etc., how all the Asians look the same, etc.
