LOS ANGELES - Britney Spears was charged Friday with misdemeanor counts of hit and run and driving without a valid license after she allegedly smashed her car into another in a parking lot in August, prosecutors said.
If convicted, the singer could face up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine for each count, said Nick Velasquez, spokesman for the city attorney’s office.
Messages left with Spears’ attorneys were not immediately returned.

Every time I hear of some celebrity driving their car recklessly, going on a coke binge, etc. and there's talk of possible prison time, I think of a quote from the Simpsons:
"This is America. We don't send our celebrities to jail."
and it usually holds true.

well, i don't think anyone goes to jail from a hit and run of an empty car in a parking lot on a first offense.
