said that "some people still dont believe in global warming even though scientists have proved its true" i almost jumped out of my chair. i believe the earth naturally goes through temperature cycles.

my question is for the liberals.. do you believe that scientists have "proved" global warming? or do you just like protecting the environment (which i have no problem with)

The biggest problem in my opinion is the massive deforestation thats going on right now...

lol.  Yes, there is no "reforestation".  Once you cut a tree down, another one will never grow in its place.  This is why the hundreds of thousands of acres of forests devastated by fire are still desolate wastelands.  Did you even realize that the only tree left on the planet is in Clinton, IA?  Thankfully, fire was outlawed in Iowa in 1922.  If you outlaw progress, preservation is the obvious outcome.

Didn't read the thread.

However, you do all realize that the middle portion of the United States was covered by glaciers 10,000 years ago, right?

I won't deny that the earth is warmer, but really, LOL @ thinking we can control the temperature of the earth.

no shit it is the result of human activity, its called eating.  To have a society like ours, mass produciton is necessary.  There is no getting around the fact we will have an impact on the world.  To try and use scientific evindence with such a small sample is like trying to predict poker odds with a billion card deck.  Please dont tell me that the weather from 2004-2007 or w/e (i dont say now because there hasnt been a hurricane) is because of pollution since 1920, you sound worse than the religous people saying its god punishing us

This is just an amazing post on so many levels.  God...where do I start?

Well, I guess first...I just love the dissonance between "There is no getting around the fact we will have an impact on the world" and "Please don't tell me that the weather from 2004-2007...is because of pollution since 1920."  So let me get this straight...its inevitable that humans will have an impact, but don't tell you that there actually has been an impact?  Really?

For what its worth, I don't think that Hurricane Katrina or any of the rest are the direct result of global warming...its simply not hot enough for all that yet.  People who were like "SEE THERES GONNA BE MONSTER STORMS LIKE THIS ALL THE TIME AND ALL YOU GULF COAST PEOPLE ARE HELLA FUX0RED BETTER CREATE A CATEGORY 6 LOLZ!" were being dumb.  Some of them actually are dumb.  But, over time, warmer oceans will lead to stronger average storms than before.

Also, I could quibble and say that the Industrial Revolution actually began in the 1850s in the United States and earlier in Britain, but meh.

I'll agree with you that in the scheme of the earth's history, 400,000 years of data is obviously not a census (although I would point out that you can produce very accurate data on the outcome of an election involving 130 million people by sampling only 2,000 of them).  However, it is a very large period of time when weighed against the sum of human history and we've simply never lived in a time with these levels of carbon dioxide.  The fact that the beginnings of these unprecedented highs are exactly concurrent with the dawn of industrial activity should at the very least raise your eyebrows.

I also got a kick out of this part

tommpat2000:

Humans are omnivores.  If we wanted or needed to, the whole planet could get along just fine with a diet purely comprised of fruits and vegetables.  Now, before you lose your shit, I'm very firmly NOT a vegetarian or vegan of any sort, nor do I have any wish to be.  However, the idea that widespread production of cows and other meat animals is necessary for society is laughable.

Finally, I'm gonna return to your point that "there's no getting around the fact we will have an impact on the world."  This is absolutely true, by definition we must impact our environment in order to live in a modern society.  That does not mean that we can't search for and implement ways to reduce our impact.

I don't think it's proven, but definitely worth carefully considering action.  The scientific types identified similar environmental/health threats associated with CFCs, Lead, PCBs, DDT, mercury, etc.  Governments have intervened and reduced the use of these based upon the perceived threat.  We still have hair spray, air conditioning, pesticides, paint, fillings in our teeth, etc.  The economy didn't collapse.

Regardless of your views, nobody with half a brain believes scientists have proven much about global warming.
