$1k per month. Do you get your own personal physician for that?
Man up, fuck the insurance off, if anything really bad happens get on a flight to London (get treated for free!).

Wein, as someone who has recently shopped for health insurance, I can answer your question fully and completely.
Because you live in New York, there are regulations that are really screwing you. Specifically, health insurance companies are required to charge each individual person the same regardless of their health status or age. In most other states, health insurance companies charge people with previous conditions a higher premium, and because that is not legal in New York, the burden is evenly spread, which really hurts young healthy people without previous conditions like diabetes, previous heart conditions, cancer etc. You pay the same as a 60 year old with all of the above.
In any event, unless you have some health issues that I am unaware of, don't get a full HMO plan. Get one that covers the big stuff only, and pay for your office visits out-of-pocket.
My advice to you is to contact Mutual of Omaha who broker Health Insurance from GHI. They won't cover your doctor's visits, but they will cover all of the disastrous stuff that could really hurt your wallet. It might cost $300-400, and $500 at most. Even if you go to the doctor 3x/month, you won't pay $1000./mo.
The phone number is 1-800-775-6000.
Hope that helps!
Wow. What a crappy law. It's NY so I'm not surprised. Good post Jennifear.

Young + Healthy = Health Savings Account Just get a high deductable health plan for catostrophic problems and you're good to go.

hsa is def way to go for your whole life if you dont have probs now some of the high deductable 5,000 and up pay 100% after the deductable that beats the 80% most regular plans pay. esp if you have a major problem 100k+

I assume the idea is to allow people with problems to get affordable health insurance, so the hospitals/doctors get paid when they get sick. The less people that can't pay for their treatments, the less the governments have to fund the hospitals. Of course, this idea helps the older/less fortunate among us, and hurts the young and healthy.

Yea that NY situation really sucks. But when we get national healthcare it'll be really great.

I live in NYC and I pay $423 while on cobra (waiting for new job ins to kick in). I'll tell you that NYC and NYS suck when it's comes to insurance. I saw many options, and none were very good.

If I factor that half of all government revenue goes to healthcare in Canada. I pay approx 18K tax yearly, so 9K of that goes to Healthcare, I would be paying about $800 and change monthly+ my employer pays my $56 monthly healthcare premium that I declare as a taxable benefit. I would rather opt out of this, and go private if it can be had for $500 or so monthly.

The thing about Canada is that your not only paying for your healthcare, but you are also paying for everyone else's that cannot afford it. I much rather have it this way, knowing that people who cannot afford the healthcare can still get it.
