lets say an angel came down to you and said that if you choose to sacrifice yourself they would spare the lives of 500 people that were gonna die tomorrow anyway?

they would be good people of course with familys and such

bfactor you obv dont have kids or nieces/nephews. You'd let all of your familiy die, parents, kids, nephews/nieces in order to be the lone person on earth?

I wouldn't sacrifice myself for any number or random people.

Maybe a very small number of people I know and love, maybe.

My first instinct is identical to bfactors.

However, on further reflection the answer is yes and here's why:

In order for an angel to come down and offer this proposition, then that means that God is real and heaven exists.  Despite the fact that I've been an atheist for all of my adult life, if I were to sacrifice myself for 500 people I'm certain that would have to be good enough to get me into heaven.  Since heaven is by definition infinitely better than earth, and now I get to go, I would do it.

lol wat

why

you'd die so your grandfather who's already old and lived a great life, I'm sure, could hang on for a couple extra years? why? makes zero sense

and for your cousins? and other randos in the family?

Well, I don't plan on ever having kids (probably partly because I would not be willing to die for my kid, which is pretty fucked up, so I'm not the type of person who should have kids that means) but yea, I would let all my family die as well as everyone else on the planet if it meant I got to live another 50ish years, even if it was all alone on the planet.

I don't think letting everyone on earth die would really be all thaaat big of a deal, they were all going to die anyway cuz humans don't live very long, relative to the universe nor relative to eternity either, so fuck it, everyone else can die, and then I'll die too, but like 50 years after everyone else and have fun for an extra 50 years.

Unless it was like, if the Angel said I would go to Hell if I said no, and I made him pinky swear that he wasn't just tricking me as a test, and he pinky swore with me, then obv I would sacrifice myself.  But, assuming there was no heaven or hell, then yea I definitely would not sacrifice myself to sacrifice any amount of people.  Sorry.

So if it was 4 randoms, you wouldn't do it, but, if it was 5 randoms you would not only do it, but do it without even hesitating?  Lol what the fuck?  How does it suddenly go from it being a "no" with 4 random people but then magically as soon as it's 5 people it's now a "yes" without hesitation???  What makes 5 such a special number?
