How does Lil and the other top pros do it - Lil a respnse would also be cool
By fpdog on 05-13-2008 6:50 PM

I have absolutley no doubt that Lil and a few others are phenomenal players but how do they oversome the variance. I know Im not in their league but it happens so often that Im at that critical point in a tourny and just get beat by a bad beat - example jj in bb other night closing in on money in 2nd chance, guy raises i push , not short but lower with fe if i need it and he calls off 60% of his stack with ajos ace hits game over- these happen a lot - I dont care about the beats just how to overcome the variance to go deeper- Ive been cashing just not deep recently I have gone deep before including winning a tourny on party back in the day - i understand image, position, blind stealing etc - but am I playing too tight? I often feel that I quickly fall below the average stack size but its hard to steal when you have raises and reraises already in front of you. do i simplyneed even more volume? If so what type of volume do people put in?

SO I was wondering if Lil or other top people could give a little tutorial without giving away too much or as much as they feel comfotable with especially since this is a site about teaching and helping others - so everyone else keep your flame responses elsewhere

In so many words, what you are asking, is how to play good poker.

You have to win races when you are the fav to win tourneys. End of story. Run good and you will win.

Bust your ass

pay attention

be humble and willing to learn

find a small edge and exploit it, repeat process by playing 10k mtts a month

no thats not really what he is asking. If you dont run good at the final 2 tables you can forget making any real money in tournament poker. It is that simple.

Since you don't seem to want responses from the prolatariat why don't you PM your heros: It might save you a lot of reading.

People under estimate how hard these guys work to be great.  They put in countless hours and are students of the game.

The best thing you can do is build a stack so that when push time comes and you lose a coin flip or take a bad beat, it doesn't cost you all your chips.  You need to be the one putting 60% of your chips in (although not necessarily with AJ) and not needing to win coin flip after coin flip.  Even if you have AA vs. KK 4 times all in the chances of winning all and staying in the tournament is about 43%.   The chances of winning just 4 coin flips is just over 6%.

I would say loosen up and see how it goes.  Also, watch the top pros and see how they build a stack, play a tournament, etc.

Yeah, online poker is rigged. They get dealt AA every 5 hands and you don't. Thanks for the meaningful post. Wonder WTF are you doing playing online poker if it's rigged.

I remember a post a few months back, or maybe an article someplace, that talked about getting yourself into positions where you're average or above average stacked and late in tourneys and attacking other large stacks because you're actually WANTING to flip. And not just once but TWICE! It struck me as odd because when I read it I was thinking,"Who the hell wants to flip for your tourney life after you've worked so hard to build a stack?". I had always thought about maintaining my stack and maybe growing it in the last couple of tables by picking on medium stacks and stealing. The notion seemed absurd and counterproductive. Then I read on.

The guy wasn't talking about flipping for his tourney life but flipping for tourney lives. He said that when he got into spots where he had a medium to large stack late in a tourney that he'd welcome flipping twice in each tourney reasoning that of every four times he got into this spot he could count on loising both flips once, splitting them twice and winning them both once. It's that 4th time when you win both flips and build a huge, crushing, abusive stack and ride it to the top 3 finish we're all craving that he said was key to his tourney success.

Obviously he's playing a ton of volume to get into these spots often enough to be thinking in these terms and that's probably the other thing that's critically important to MTT success. Play a ton.

Now I'm a donk and I suck so, please, better players correct me if this sounds absurd, but I recall reading that maybe a year ago and thought to myself, "Wow, there is radically different thinking than my own going on out there that I'd never even consider".

i think pushing here with JJ was probably not the right play either.  Unless you like to flip a coin for your whole tourney tht close to the money or even at anytime really.  If it was me and his chip stack had me covered id of just called the raise prelfop and seen what fell on the flop.  If overs came then id use my discretion but most likely id be done with the hand.  Learn to play Jacks like a medium pair because most of the time when you get your chips in the middle with thtis hand you flipping a coin!
