How does Lil and the other top pros do it - Lil a respnse would also be cool
By fpdog on 05-13-2008 6:50 PM

I have absolutley no doubt that Lil and a few others are phenomenal players but how do they oversome the variance. I know Im not in their league but it happens so often that Im at that critical point in a tourny and just get beat by a bad beat - example jj in bb other night closing in on money in 2nd chance, guy raises i push , not short but lower with fe if i need it and he calls off 60% of his stack with ajos ace hits game over- these happen a lot - I dont care about the beats just how to overcome the variance to go deeper- Ive been cashing just not deep recently I have gone deep before including winning a tourny on party back in the day - i understand image, position, blind stealing etc - but am I playing too tight? I often feel that I quickly fall below the average stack size but its hard to steal when you have raises and reraises already in front of you. do i simplyneed even more volume? If so what type of volume do people put in?

SO I was wondering if Lil or other top people could give a little tutorial without giving away too much or as much as they feel comfotable with especially since this is a site about teaching and helping others - so everyone else keep your flame responses elsewhere

They have the same bad beats put on them in key spots too, they just play their other hands better and hopefully end up winning them once in a while. A win erases a lot of losses.

You know what Waco....your Alwful....first you bitch about the forum turning into gossip column and everyone just flames and yada yada yada, and make a thread that we need a high stakes MTT forum and what not....then someone comes around with a legitimate question, and all you have to say is this thread is alwful........Check this out John Kerry....stick with one side or GTFO.....I'm so sick of this shit.......oh the irony...

i'm beginning to think waco has people following him around in PD waiting for him to say something that doesn't include a full length analysis just to flame him. kind of like paparazzi.

The better you get, the more you realize that your skill only allows you to reduce the amount on 'human-generated' variance...i.e. misplaying. There will always be a natural variance in poker, it is absolute. (wonder if that constituted a pun b/c of AP superuser...anyways)

At that point it is a game of volume. If you are the type of person who sattys into bigger events as a way of 'taking a shot' it is obv. different than a guy with a BR who can just buy in like you would for a $11 mtt.

Step 1: Learn the game to the point you have an edge

Step 2: Increase volume

Step 3: repeat.

The obvious anomoly would be a guy like Menlo, who is just so sick it goes beyond any kind of human rationale. But you should get my point

I'm not here to flame anybody......I'm just saying....don't be a hypocryte...I am curious to know how some of the top pro's do it as well in these tournies....then to have a top pro come in with some smart ass remark, after he is against smart ass remarks.........makes no sense..

Hang on.  So most of the time you get your chips in with JJ, you get called by KQ+?

...really?

edit: page 2, crap

the biggest thing they "know" that most people dont is just understanding the game of poker. I dont mean neccisarily making the best play, etc (this comes with playing, discussing, learning and thinking about the game) but the fact they KNOW they lose the majority of the time (80% of the MTTs+ they wont cash in) and understand that you play well over volume and you run good and bad. they know that if they lose 200 mtts in a row, as long as they are confident they have played well and trust the %s, it does even out.

variance is not just bad, everyone has positive and negative. playing optimally makes the running bad the least bad, and the running good the best it can be.

People have said it but haven't highlighted it.

The answer you are looking for is:

 multiaccounting

volume

plain and simple. keep within your BR and play lots and lots of volume. The beats will wash out.

Most players don't really understand how much volume really plays a part in being a winning poker player.  To win a tourney you have to run good late in it and that isn't going to happen very often.  You also have to be willing to get your chips in the middle as a coinflip late in a tourney, especially these days where everyone is overly aggressive.

Whoever mentioned flatting with JJ and seeing a flop, this is right in certain situations but what you need to understand is that late in a tourney with larger blinds and antes often times you are getting great odds to take a coinflip, combine this with your fold equity when you raise/shove and getting it in with JJ becomes VERY +EV.
