ICM Spot...ur play?
By JLucky34 on 05-14-2008 7:42 PM

Knowing that the button understands the situation, what's your play and why?

It took all my time bank to decide what was optimal here, and I will say my choice after some of you discuss.

PokerStars Game #17434551044: Tournament #88378077, $15+$1 Hold'em No Limit - Level IX (300/600) - 2008/05/14 - 20:36:00 (ET)

Seat 4: juandadi (1030 in chips)
Seat 7: guy720 (6490 in chips)
Seat 9: 540 Fitter (5120 in chips)
JLucky34: posts the ante 50
juandadi: posts the ante 50
guy720: posts the ante 50
540 Fitter: posts the ante 50

BUM!!!!!!!!!!!!! I missread the hand, and put the stacks without taking in consideration the blinds that had to be paid. My bad :(

ICM says fold, but I think pushing is ur best choice here. U dont have any FE anyways so u may as well. An important question that no one has asked is how has 540 been playin? Has he been raising a lot of hands or not? If he has then its definitely an easy call/push imo.

This seems like a pretty clear fold to me - it is an STT and you should be trying to make the money rather than win at this stage, especially given stacks.

BB has 1030, posts 50 ante and 600 BB, leaving 380.  Assuming he has any clue, he is will be calling with ATC here, as he will be blinded out before you.

Button may have ATC as well, but we are not enough of a favourite against 2 random hands to be calling when folding may lock up third.

Thanks for the responses, this was my reasoning (some of which I should have included in OP)

1.  Strictly ICM speaking, I guess I can barely see this as a fold.  The button understands the situation and will just commit both of us to hopefully get down to the final three.

2. I didn't mention that if I call BB will almost certainly fold unless given a monster.  It seems like a lot of you think he will call here guaranteed, but since he seemed to be a regular + tighter player, if I go in he will fold.

3.  A7h seems too strong to fold here given the two above.  If I do fold however, bb will call with any 2, and I will be left at the mercy of the deck with < 1BB left in my stack.  Still in this reasoning, I am borderline, but I shaded at a call, did, and happened to win against QTo, ended up finishing 2nd in the tourney.

4. BUT I'm not saying my play was right, the majority in here seem to elect a fold, and I probably would have leaned towards calling more often than not (in this STT I still believe it was the correct play to call), but now I realize I probably shouldn't without specific reads.  So I thank you all :)

Fold because juan will blind out before we do.  He will need to win a showdown.  If he does, that doesn't necessarily disqualify us, either.

"I didn't mention that if I call BB will almost certainly fold unless given a monster.  It seems like a lot of you think he will call here guaranteed, but since he seemed to be a regular + tighter player, if I go in he will fold."

This is a very very poor/incorrect assumption.  If you call he should almost always call. The percentage that his call takes away from you winning the hand (and thus him cashing) is much more valuable than the few chips he saves if he folds.

Snap call..imo.

sorry woosewoo, I didn't specify that part either :)

I meant this was player dependent.  He wasn't good enough in these to recognize the fact that he MUST call if I call, it was a prior assumption because even 4 handed the guy was playing beyond tight.  Was big chip lead and folded down to this situation here.  so...that's what i meant.

I think this is a fold too, with blinds as they are its not going to be long before the bubble finishes and the other guys is close to blinding out.

also A7 or what ever it is you I have (I forgot exactly)  is behind a large range of hands like 88+, A8+ and is not even in great shape against something like J9o (about 5-3 in your favor I think)...

I think it's a fold because juandadi is blinded out before the BB hits you again.  He needs to call this or next hand before you need to make the same decision.  If he survives, then you are under the gun.  That is why the ICM has such a tight range for JLucky on this hand.

thanks for the clarification

I'm sorry but am I missing something here? How does Juandadi blind out before us hell have 100 or so chips left if he choses to fold all the way and We'll be left to post a big blind soon for all our chips.

Am I wrong? maybe I'm missing something.  You'll have a showdown before he does although he's crippled he can wait for you.  Still say call.

You're gonna have to show down later so y not now.

You're missing the antes I think.  OP would outlast him.
