Showing Cards without Showdown
By gguk2008 on 07-25-2008 6:02 AM

Do you ever show your cards, either live or online, if you take a pot down without a showdown? Under what circumstances would you, and under which circumstances would you not?

I tend not to. I used to show all the time, and then I realised I was handing out free information. The last time I showed a hand was a bluff on my last hand at a cash table, just out of spite. What's the point?! The only other time I tend to show is when playing friends just to see their reaction.

I'm a petty, petty man.

I just leave auto muck on. That way I never get tempted.

The only reason I can think of to show is if you are playing a rebuy and want to show that you are pushing any two, or if you are playing in a private tourny with friends, just for fun.

Yes, I once got dealt 27 offsuit and potted (cash game). only 1 caller. Flop all bricks. I put in another raise, call again. Brick. I go all-in, villain folds and I show. Then I play tighth for a while until I got AA. Played it exactly like I played my 27 but this time my all-in is called and take down a huge pot.

I show pocket pair quads and straight flushes nothing else.

Except the occasional spite superman-a-ho bluff.

I show all monsters like quads, str8 flushes and royals.  I might show if I am short stack and I do a few all ins o show I am pushing with strong hands.  That way when I am desperate and only got about 5bbs maybe my 2-7 i have to push situation might not get calledjust bc I showed KK, AQ and TT the hands before.

Usually, I'll only show if I want the information out there.  If I've been playing quite a few hands, and I actually flopped something, I might show if everyone folds, just to show that I have it.  Or, I'll show when I have a hand and I bet the flop and turn, if I think players are watching, and I want to set up something for later.

Though, I try not to show too often.  I heard a rule of thumb that if your showing more than once an hour, you are showing too much, so I try to hold to that.

in a cash game i never show.  the only real called for spot is if you arent getting action, and you need to bump your image, so maybe show a bluff or a weak raise.  i would never try to downplay being active.

tournaments are different, it can help a lot for forming an image and telling others you arent messing around.  like the first example, trying to get more action so show a bluff?  and also, if you are in late position every so often ill show AK or a bigger pair to say im not stealing.   also if a big stack just gets moved to your table, the first time i would think about showing him a big hand if its his blinds, to say you arent messing with him.   "arent messing" in quotes , its all smoke and mirrors ya?

fairly standard only shows policy

I basically never show. If i'm deep in a tourney and raising every pot i'll occaisonally show a real hand just so I can continue to run over the table.

I agree with those saying that they show monsters.  If I have a monster and a person makes a good laydown I will usually show.  If I have a marginal/decent hand I won't and I never show bluffs anymore!

I was playing a liver tourney where the players are bad.  One hand I had 7 8 clubs and decided I was going to play it as a monster.  Raised on all streets and got this lady (that was just horrible) to call all the way to the end and then fold.  I showed the bluff.  A few hands later I get JJ .  I made a 3x bb raise and she was the only caller (she was bb).  flop of A 5 6 two spades.  She checked I bet the pot and she came over the top but not enough that I could fold.  I called and she had Q J two hearts and she said that she went all in because she "knew" I was bluffing.  Of course a Q hit on the river and she took a pretty good amount of my stack.

Online in MTTs I very rarely show, since you or the others at your table are moved so often (I wish the software was a lot more logical at shifting players) but a live tourney, or in an online STT I might show a few well played good hands to help build a strong image early so I can use that to my advantage later (A good image is usually worth a couple uncontested steals when the pots become worthwhile).

I usually ask to see when they show the person sitting next to them..."show one show all"

I showed my one and only royal at a cash table....other than that online I only show hands during the rebuy hour.
