Any successful poker players ever lose passion for the game and just quit?

Ever since I got home from my trip to Niagara and Foxwoods, I've almost completely lost my drive/desire to play poker. I find myself not wanting to play online, even on Sundays. Id seriously rather sit on my ass watching tv than play online. Even when I do force myself to play because its "what I should do" I find myself not caring at all and losing interest while playing, and tilting like a mother****er.

I guess what I'm wondering if any of you personally or know people that this has happened to, and what happened. Did they quit completely and haven't played since? Did it take a lengthy break to spark their interest again? I dunno I'm just starting to lose hope that I can continue to play a lot of poker and enjoy doing it, which is obviously something I would like to do because of the money it provides.

What i'm going through in poker is a recurring theme in my life... I have a very obsessive personality, get very good at something, and drop it really quickly forever. Started with sports, specifically golf... then MTG... then a few video games (nerd)... and then poker... but I really, really don't want it to happen to poker.

Any thoughts/opinions/suggestions would be greatly appreciated, Its kinda a depressing situation =/

Thanks,
Scott

^^^ I def agree with that

I've recently started playing 5 card draw and I've really liked it, It feels like your starting all over again and gives you somewhere to go with your career.

the standard NLHE just got boring playing sngs', it just got too repetative breaking it all down to a science although i did win.

Try volunteering (spellcheck) somewhere. No joke, you will feel sooooo good after doing it. I have helped out at a food shelf before. Visiting things like that really get your mind off anything that is bothering you. Even putting in like 2 hours somewhere will leave you feeling really satisfied afterwards. Def really +Ev.

GL with everything scott, no matter where you go with this. There are obviously a whole lot of people in the poker world who think a whole lot about you. I think almost everything has been said, but what I will say is this. Whether you already have one or not, I am not sure, but make sure to have a good routine. x2then wrote a great article on P5's not too long ago about having a good routine. Whether its having a nice long workout in the morning before you start playing, or having a big meal. There will be a routine that you can find, and if you find the routine that suites you best, I am sure your urge and drive to play poker will come back. Luckily I am still early in my poker career, but I have had my times where after playing 10-16 hours a day for about a month gets tiring. At the start of it you wake up feeling "LETS GO LETS GO POKER TIME WOOT" and by the end of it you wake up feeling "Oh god, another long day...hmm, I wonder what i'm gonna order for lunch..." - best of luck to you finding out what works for you, and hopefully this all works itself out and you get back into the routine of pwning fishies =)

yo.
This happened to me like 5 times over the past couple years. I never playhed the volume that you did, but i played pretty consistently since senior year oh high school. I play for a while and win money but start to get bored and just don't have fun anymore, even though im making money i don't enjoy it, so i quit for a couple months, and maybe just play sundays. I enjoy what college has to offer while i still can. After a few months Ill get an itch and play a little more and then stop. I get addicted to things easy, and poker is one, but taking the couple months break every now and then really helps me maintain a healthy lifestyle, and I still enjoy it. I found when i was play every day non stop (2 summers ago) I began to hate poker, I hated waking up and playing when I could be out doing stuff. (I also used to play a lot of golf) I never play anymore when i feel like it is work...thats my rule speically with school ending

Take some of your earnings and dive into FXTrading. It's much like MTTs: it needs a good strategy, takes guts to actually make a trade based on your decisions and swings can be as awful as well :). You'd also definitely need to apply BR management but it sure is fun when the trade goes your way for 100 pips at $10/pip in less than 10 minutes. GL

SCT, in my opinion your life would benefit greatly by adding more physical/outdoor activities to your life, such as mountain-biking, snowbooarding, wakeboarding, rock-climbing, or even somthing like boxing, or jiu-jitsu.  These types of activities will give u a great rush and workout which is good for you phsychologically.  Lower volume will definitely be somthing to experiment with too, and I'm not sure if you already do, but why not play cash games, It would be something new for you to master.  Also when ur bored of poker just hop on battlenet and pwn some n00bs

Work to live or live to work.  When poker becomes a livelihood it probably is subject to the same up and down swings that go with any source of income.  I practice law to support my family but have a lot more fun playing live and online poker.  Poker is pure competition, especially in the tournament format.  Poker doesn't really stimulate the other parts of my mind like a really good book or a great conversation with an interesting person does though.  Regardless of what you do for a living you have to strike a balance or you might be shaving off all your hair and hanging with Britney.  Choose a new goal, non-poker related, and start working toward it.  But it has to be a real challenge, like training for the ironman or running a marathon.  The lure of an impossible challenge will be a good motivator.  GL!

id say get a 9-5 job where you're an underling and have to listen to people tell you what to do all day. that'll probably suck, and you'll realize how much of a gift poker is.

on a personal note, sctrojans quitting poker = +EV

but i've been talking with a few players about this recently. running bad, and it sucks. i'm fairly miserable. i have 1 cash out of 42 tournies this month on ftp. if that's not the most pathetic stat you've ever seen i dont know what is (and that was at the beginning of the night - add 6 or so tournies, so we're int he 48ish range atm).

but since i've had my one and only big score i've somewhat lost desire too, but i think it's more because i've been running bad. break is probably the best thing, unless that's what's causing it.

i also don't know why this is in italics. i didnt select it, it's not selected now, and i cant turn it off.

brilliantly stated as always AJK... i agree completely in that u lose ur fire for the game by quitting, play through it, keep dominating, and continue to rule the world sctrojans, my only dream is to one day play u h/u in the million w/ a 3-1 chiplead and go on to donk it away to your inevitable victory... FTW trojans, u2 ajk, 2 of the classy guys in poker

to be honest i have the same personality. its natural for people to want to go out on top and lose interest. youre obv very good at it and it can get get boring. from my own personal experience with hockey, i was very good, played in all star games and won championships but i lost my drive for it because i went out on top and didnt think i would like to drop from the top. now a few years away from high level hockey and organized sports i find myself wanting to be back in it and thinking of what could have been. find what made you want to play poker and y you love to do it. if you cant then move on but it would be a shame to lose a great player like yourself

I have a similiar thing just happening to me SCT. I had a little bit of success and even though I haven't  been making a ton of money (like you) I reached my long time goal of a cash over 5K. Since then I haven't really needed the money too bad so my passion is not nearly as strong as it use to be.

I suggest taking like a month long break. Maybe you will drop out of the top ten and that may bother you and you'll come back playing like you used to.

Another thing is you have deff. mastered the art of tournaments but what about cash? omaha? stud? Try being the best at another poker game while playing NLH tourney's at the same time.

Set some huge audacious goals tell some friends about it and try and reach it. Maybe that will fuel your fire. Gl sct!

why do you think ivey, daniel, etc, all play golf now?

Ivey said he plays more golf than poker now...you gotta move from one hobby to another once you master the first one.  Its a part of life.  You can still enjoy poker, but maybe you wont be able to enjoy it until you find yourself in love with another hobby.

taking a vacation isnt going to do anything, neither is taking a break.  Seriously, pick up a hobby. go play golf, learn how to play an instrument, or my favorite suggestion: learn to rebuild old cars.  you have the money to do it, plus, once you rebuild cars, you can sell them for a lot more than you bought them for -- still giving you an income

Have a favorite type of music?  Make it a goal to see a bunch of concerts throughout the world when bands you like go on tour.  anything.  but continue to play the game you are utterly amazing at.  there is no reason to take a break, instead, play a much smaller volume.

wait until you are ready, the time will come. everyone is unique, if losing the passion and quitting poker scares you right now, don't do it, wait. this isn't something someone can really give you advice on
