Ever since I got home from my trip to Niagara and Foxwoods, I've almost completely lost my drive/desire to play poker. I find myself not wanting to play online, even on Sundays. Id seriously rather sit on my ass watching tv than play online. Even when I do force myself to play because its "what I should do" I find myself not caring at all and losing interest while playing, and tilting like a mother****er.
I guess what I'm wondering if any of you personally or know people that this has happened to, and what happened. Did they quit completely and haven't played since? Did it take a lengthy break to spark their interest again? I dunno I'm just starting to lose hope that I can continue to play a lot of poker and enjoy doing it, which is obviously something I would like to do because of the money it provides.
What i'm going through in poker is a recurring theme in my life... I have a very obsessive personality, get very good at something, and drop it really quickly forever. Started with sports, specifically golf... then MTG... then a few video games (nerd)... and then poker... but I really, really don't want it to happen to poker.
Any thoughts/opinions/suggestions would be greatly appreciated, Its kinda a depressing situation =/
Thanks, Scott

i've been playing for years and whole not on your level, I have always made money playing poker. Sure I would love to be taking down the 109r's and stuff but poker isn't just about money to me. It's about trapping some fish, 4 betting with air and watching them fold, etc...etc
It's about the rush when you final table a tourney. The pain that comes from being 1 outted then the happiness when you win a tourney.
Put poker in perspective, what is it about the game that you enjoy? Maybe that will help you find the answer.
I personally take breaks from poker. Sometimes I got 3-6 months without playing, then I sit down for a night and play.
Do what makes you happy, a break never hurt anyone and it might also rekindle your passion for this game...

Maybe you should make an appointment with a psychiatrist
Im absolutely serious, you might want to look into talking to a sports
psychologist, since competitive fields are your specialty, you should
talk to someone who's a professional at talking to competitive people
and specializes in getting them back into a competitive mindset.
Its also good to talk to an objective 3rd party who's job it is to get
you to remember why you love what you do so much.
anyway, hope this helps

i assume you have a bit stashed away by now so the best advice i can
give is why dont you go see the world - not as a poker player but as a
normal everyday Joe oir Scott / backpacker - best experiences i ever
had in my life was taking some time out and hitched my way through
Europe for 3-4 months doing nothing but meeting people - sleeping on
beaches and having fun again.
when your work consumes you or your not enjoying it anymore take some
time out enjoy life again - go sip sangria on the costa de sol, go look
at naked boobies on the greek isles, go for an allnight party in
prague, go drink vodka with 5 crazy ruskies in St Peters / Moscow, go
dog sledding in the arctic circle, go swim in the lava pool outside
Reykavik - theres so much out there go recharge the batteries mate
You'll come back refreshed and full of life - might not be to poker but
you'll get out of the slump your in and feel good about things again.
You dont have to do these things in style either best times i had was
broke sleeping on a beach in Spain wondering how the hell i was gonna
get back home again - people i met were incredible and the memories
unreal.

I felt like that while I was playing WoW. I quit WoW and after a month break or so, my drive came right back.
I usually find this happening after big wins or really good runs. It feels like I've accomplished my goal so its hard to find the drive to go back to playing once you've reached your goal. Its also really helpful to surround yourself with peers who talk a lot about poker and influence you about poker to get you playing again.
Take a break, sometimes it takes a week or more for the desire to play to come back or sometimes even 5 months.

SC, Green plastic described it right on the money. I know several people that made a couple hundred g's and got used to the lifestyle and started playing less and losing passion. Time off is probably a good way to go, or find hobbies. Start working out, playing sports, learning shit that you have always wanted to learn. Sittiing on your ass and watching tv prob isnt the best way to go, obv u realize that as well. Being a high stakes mtt grinder can wear anyone out....people just don't realize how grueling it really is. Its fucking hard work and that is why it can be easy to get burnt out. Anyways gl man...and im sure things will start to fall back in place....
Also, SC u have made quite a bit of money...enjoy it....if you don't want to travel or things like that, invest it or try to put it too good use. Alot of mtter's including myself don't really use their money, esp. if your younger 19-24...and just reinvesting it to play more poker is what we have all gotten use to...

you are a idol for many upcoming online poker player. You were raild my many people when you play in the tournaments. You should think about that, that you are a famous online gamer. 3-4 years ago noone knows sc trojans, and now every online player knows this name from the online rankings and tournaments.you should take a time out if you are playing bad and on tilt because you are not in the situation to play your best poker. Do something other in this time and then comeback with your A-Game and we will see SCT on the final table again.good luck

It is all about balance.
Don't force yourself to play poker. Nothing good will come from it.
Take this time off to explore other hobbies and interest.
Odds are, your competitive poker juices will start to flow again after you take a break.
I would recommend getting away from poker entirely for a month and then decide to get back at it or take another month off.
What you are experiencing is normal.
Since you are in college, might I suggest the hobby of chasing girls.

Just stop and think about the people grinding out $8 an hour working crazy hours on their feet all day, while you/alot of others get to do something most people do for fun, for a living, sitting ina comfy chair making your own hours.
don't lose sight of the fact that you are extremely lucky to be doing what your doing.

Take it easy for awhile but don't let such amazing talent go to waste... perhaps, after a break from poker, you' ll find that you need a source of income and can pick back up where you left off :) best of luck.

I don't have any advice really but i'm the exact same, get very passionate about a certain game or sport, play so much of it for a while, then all of a sudden lose every bit of interest I had in it. Same with poker for me. When I lost all passion for the game I turned into a losing player from a winning player after a year of being a consistent winner. I was forcing myself to play so i guess thats why I was losing and also i never used to tilt but then I tilted from every little bad beat I got when I lost the passion for it. Haven't really played a big buyin since the FTOPS in May 2007.
I'm sure i'll start playing again, I might start playing a few live events (maybe an EPT or some others) that might rekindle my passion for the game, playing online feels like a grind and isn't all that fun at times, well for me anyways, the last few months I would rather watch tv than play online poker when i'm at home.
Anyways GL maybe taking some time off and a holiday away might work for ya.
