How can you explain to Wife poker is not gambling?  I have been a winning player with good ROI.  She says it takes time away from us.  Which it does sometimes. Any thoughts.......

This is one of the most difficult and frustrating things to explain to people because usually they are narrow minded and incapable of understanding a concept different to their own beliefs.

You have to think of a simile for none poker players, something like this:

If you're the best in your town at answering questions in a quiz, this no doubt means you know the answers to more questions than everyone else. Therefore, you'll be a favourite everytime time you sit down with them, how strong a favourite depends on how many more answers you have than your opponent does. Now, over a quiz of 1000 questions, you'll be a substantial favourite, because the volume of potential questions you know the answers to will be higher. However, if the the quiz contains only 10 questions, your edge will decrease, and while you will still be a favourite, you won't be a clear favourite for obvious reasons.

So basically in a small sample (say 1 session playing poker), you'll be a slight favourite over weaker opponents, because you have more answers than they do, but during that given session, it may occur that the questions you have the answers to are not asked, but the questions your opponents have the answer to are.

This is more an example of varience, but none poker players have the most trouble understanding varience. They see you win $1000 one week, then lose $600 the following week, and will come to the conclusion that you were merely lucky in week one, and unlucky in week two, and with luck being 50/50 (you are either lucky or unlucky) they then decide that your results will go either way every single day, purley because they fail to grasp the mathematics of probability.

However, I don't think you can 100% say poker is not a gamble, because it still is, as although odds generally are consistant, for instance, if you flipped a coin 10,000 times, the results should be pretty close to 50/50 heads or tails, it still doesn't mean they will definatley be. Or that age old thing of if you had an infinite number of monkeys bashing a computer for an infinite amount of time, the odds of them eventually typing the complete works of 'Shakesphere' without any mistakes would be very good. It would be mathematically probable but not mathematically certain.

But this holds true with anything in life.

Spend more time with her. Poker is a consuming game, and if your competitive like me you need to keep yourself in check.

Onto the gambling part. Create a proper record keeping system which you update regularly with how much you have taken out of the site and how much you have put in. This will not only be good for you, but proof to her you aren't gambling away your morgage. Next, if you take money out regularly reward her - buy her dinner, a new dildo or something shiny. Remember although its your money your playing with, both of you are making a sacrafice of quality time so u can make a few extra $$$.

Also teach her to play if you can, then... one day you can play her HU 4 ROLLZ

Poker is gambling to an extent & you are not going to change her mind so concentrate on things that u can change.  Try to spend a little more quality time with her and find a happy medium of allotted time that u can play... I would suggest you concentrate on cash games as mtt's can take forever & then u bustout and all she sees is that u ignored her for 5 hrs and made no $ and ur upset... Poker is a lot like sports in that the people who love u and sweat u are sometimes more upset then the player is and I wouldnt talk to much about it to her or try to get her to play... I mean I cant imagine having 2 pkr players married to ea other and have to listen to ea others beats and days over & over...  Gl but more quality time is my answer for u

Simple marry a woman that likes poker. Problem solved.

^^^^^^^What Chaz says. I married a poker player, and except for when it comes to take her daugther to soccer or remodeling the house, I can play anytime I want.

You married this woman, so I'd suggest you need to be able to talk to her and use the effective methods of listening and compromising. You even wrote down the actual problem, which isn't about whether it's gambling or not

It is gambling, and it does take a lot of time away from the family if you play any significant amount.
