I heard about it vaguely on N82s blog a while back, and heard that they were at the Rio shooting it earlier today. As far as I know, it's gonna be about the AP/UB scandals, but I doubt its scope will be limited to that. I really dont trust the mainstream media to present this honestly; instead, I think it's gonna be very damaging to online poker in general and might set back the cause. Ive got a bad feeling a bunch of wannabe politicans will be lining up before the elections to make this an issue again. Anybody heard any specifics? Am I just being overly negative about this? Any chance this will be good for poker?

Any mainstream exposure the game gets...will hurt all of us.

…most of the recreational players didnt hear about it

hundreds and thousands of fish will swim away and never come back.

we need to all be promoting the game in the best positive connotation...and encouraging the fish to stick around.

I love the extra money in my bank account

I'm interested to see what happens here. i'm really wondering if, long term, the best thing for the industry might be for 60 minutes to give it a complete hatchet job, something that will rile up politicians to protect citizens from themselves.
My thought is, poker is reasonably mainstream (ESPN is one of the largest cable channels and often shows poker on). During poker shows, online players from the US is always a focus. I think the average American knows about online poker, and though, may feel there is cheating on it, isn't really against others doing it.
So, if you get politicians all in a huff, it will force the issue out in the open, in a spot where I think the majority is ok with it. Legalize it and tax it to hell in their minds.
One thing will happen, this will intrigue me enough to watch 60 minutes the night it's on, which will be the first time I've watched it in years.

Online poker is so cancerous that it needs a mastectomy.
Actually that should probably be an orchidectomy....

Wont matter much now in the middle of an election but once its over i hope they dont have a replay of it. This is just the kind of bullshit, meaningless, means nothing to nobody but sure to grab headlines kind of thing that the Democrats will be banning left and right as they move towards their socalist and communist agenda...Remember boys...The government knows best!!!!!!
Vote Obama

I think everyone is overestimating the possible influence of a 60 Minutes report. The median age of a 60 Minutes viewer must be 80+. Also, there is no journalistic justification for 60 Minutes to repeatedly stress that the majority of online sites don't rob their customers. I don't recall hearing anything about the majority of wonderful, clean accounting firms during the Arthur Anderson scandal.
And given the political leaning of most 60 Minutes correspondents, I would expect them to present government regulation as a solution to this issue.

First of all it so fucking pathetic that the greed of some players prevent them boycotting UB and AP. If you play on AP and UB you need to admit to yourself that you are a selfish person that does not care about the good of the whole, or you are just lying to yourself and you are a hypocrite. The fact that the revenues of AP were not hurt that much by the super-user scandal, showed UB and other online sites that even if they are caught cheating in the worst way possible (step back and think about it, the fucking guy who ran AP was directily stealing from his customers and not by falsingfying some financial records, he basically reached into the pockets of some of his best customes and stole millions of dollars). I guess at some point it would be OK to go back to UB and AP once they have proved that they have made some major changes, but all they have done so far is pay back some of the money and they have claimed that they are going to have some sort of state of the art security system, I'll believe it when I see it. As far as the story, I think it will be very bad in the short term. It will scare a lot of the fish away, most of us still play online poker despite the possibility of cheating because we are winning players, but some fish that are already losing will realize that they are likely to lose even more if they are cheated. Also losing players LOVE to come up with excuses as to why they are losing besides the fact that they are not smart enough or disciplined enough to win at poker. Hopefully in the long term this will help bring about regulation, and if it does, in the end this story will be a great thing for online poker. Also I hope that they show pictures of Scott Tom or whatever the fuck his name is and that some beligerent online poker player runs into him at some point in his life and gives him what he deserves.

Honestly, I feel this can only be good for poker. Lets bring some light to the issues that we have to face, just like steroid use in Baseball, and get people to understand what's going on. I'm sure 60 mins won't take this too far and give a totally biased report. Normally they are very good at what they do and keeping themselves fair and balanced when it comes to their stories. Also as an aside, I'm sure the PPA will step in and say something to the public at large if 60 mins goes too far or something of the like. I'm looking forward to this.

I think it's going to be extremely negative (I remember Al Roker's special on online poker 3 years ago...), but I also tend to agree that in the long run it will probably be a good thing for our industry. The best thing that will possibly happen for the long term health of the industry is for the US to participate in regulation of the industry. If and when the government is able to understand that people aren't gong to stop playing, and that the best way to protect their own consumers is to get involved, they'll eventually do the right thing. I don't see that happening in 2008, of course, but I do believe that making industry news mainstream news, even when extremely negative, helps push this cause.

I'm at least glad to see my letter writing campaign is paying off. Hopefully we can get online poker on the right track.
