AN OPEN LETTER TO THE POCKET FIVES ONLINE COMMUNITY
From: Clonie Gowen
First, let me begin by apologizing to the Pocket Fives online community. Simply put, this is the most foolish thing that I have ever done and I am sincerely sorry. This is the type of action that you might expect from a teenager, but certainly not from a Full Tilt Poker Pro.
There is definitely no excuse for my actions, but I want to add a slight bit of clarification. It is important that you know that I employ an editor/collaborator, as many pros do. Rick Fuller edits most of my writing, which is something I will definitely reconsider moving forward. In a moment of very poor judgment, when editing this tip he added some copy that was obviously taken from another source - an action that goes totally against my professional ethics. In so doing, he created a tip that under no circumstance I would have submitted knowingly. He executed extremely poor judgment, as did I by not proofing the final version.
There is no excuse for this and ultimately the end product is my responsibility; a responsibility I fully accept. I will make the necessary changes to ensure that this never occurs again.
I hope this does not reflect poorly on my fellow Full Tilt Pros, all who take great pride in creating entertaining, informative and original tips for your enjoyment
With immense regret,
Clonie Gowen

I feel like this is a form letter apology. I don't think that an immense amount of time or thought was put into it. With that being said, I dont think she owes "us" an apology as much as she owes JSUP an apology, he is the one that was truly wronged in this situation and I don't think a form letter apology would cut it if it were me in his shoes. In all honesty I think the whole situation is bullshit, and he should be compensated for having something of HIS blatently copied. GL and tc, Pea

lol...I think Rick copied his bio from me. I'm a former officer, went to UW for a year, lost my bankroll to uncle when I was 8 and from seattle. this is too weird and I'm just joking about him stealing this from me, but all of this is really true about myself, except the losing to uncle when I was 8...could have been 7-10 years old....lol

I'd like to respond to Rick's central statement which seems to me
(perhaps I'm reading it wrong) to say "poker pros can't write articles,
so most of them employ ghost writers". That is how I interpretted
this line:
"This is a very common
situation in poker, many if not most pros are not writers and if they
tried to put their thoughts into words it would be horrible reading for
most of us."
I am curious to know where he gets these facts from. "Common
situation"??? Every single piece of writing I've submitted, be it
when I was first starting out and wrote an article on college sports
for some capping mag, to the strat articles I've posted on RGP and
Pocketfives, to the articles I've submitted to PokerTrails, to the Tip
From The Pros I submitted to Full Tilt have been 100% mine. I
wrote them. I do not employ a ghost writer, a co-writer, a buddy
who looks over my shoulder, or an editor that steals other people's
words and passes them off as mine. When I write
"non-professional" articles, such as most of what I post on message
boards, ect, my editor is the spell check feature. When I write
"professional" articles, I have an editor look over my work for
grammatical/spelling errors, and to make sure everything flows
correctly. The two main people who do this (Kim for FTP and Jon
for just about everything else) are very professional and do a great
job at maintaining the integrity of my piece.
I know a few other professional poker players who also write.
Ashley Adams, Gank, John Vorhaus, Richard Broadie....and mind you these
are only the people that I know personally or who are
friend-of-friends, and who I (or a close friend) have discussed writing
with. Please do not throw other people under the bus, especially
when it's patently false.

Is it Rick Fuller playing under her name as well on FT?? I see the
issue of "are they really the pro's I am playing against?" come up and
I feel with her credibility in question this is another possible issue
that FT needs to take into consideration.
I think it is absolutely lazy that a pro can't put their own thoughts
into words and then the person they hire to be their assistant cant
apparently come up with anything themselves. This isnt an essay or
thesis for college it is simply an e-mail tip! It is poker, and is what
you are supposed to love and be good at, is it that hard to write
something yourself??

"either way, shows her in a poor light."
Of that there is little doubt.

Cal, I think you are a real jerk for having your copyrighted material copied word for word and then expecting Full Tilt to make it right. More than that, I think it is awful of you to want the compensation for this to benefit the members of your site and not yourself personally. Thank you.
How people complain about 'P5s' not being harmed and the members of the site 'not deserving anything' is beyond me. Full Tilt may or may not give you and the site something, but I think it says a lot that you are fighting for the reparations to benefit the community and not yourselves personally. And if Full Tilt wanted to do a promotion or freeroll or even an extra deposit bonus, I'd be taking part, even though this whole mess has nothing to do with me or any other member of the site save jsup.
So let's STFU and see what magic Cal can conjur up for us.

Well, there ARE a lot of ghost-writing things, maybe you just don't
know of all of them. Super System 2 has ghostwritten bits (Adam
Schonfeld wrote the chapter on umm.. PLO I think?), I read that Erik
Lindgren's book was pretty much ghostwritten (but who knows), etc.
I mean, yeah, some poker players can write, but he didn't make that up
completely.

This is plain and simple a legal matter worth a good chunk of change. I hope that none of you are considering droping this without some real compensation.
GET AN ITELLECTUAL PROPERTY LAWYER NOW!!!!!
"Legal Punishments
Most cases of plagiarism are considered misdemeanors, punishable by fines of anywhere between $100 and $50,000 – and up to one year in jail.
Plagiarism can also be considered a felony under certain state and federal laws. For example, if a plagiarist copies and earns more than $2,500 from copyrighted material, he or she may face up to $250,000 in fines and up to ten years in jail"

let's keep in mind that the dollar amounts above reflect money that would be forfeited in case of a criminal prosecution for plagiarism. every dollar collected from fines resulting from criminal convictions goes to the U.S. government, not to the victims.

The court can mandate compensation on top of the fines and the fines are stiff. This is why most cases are settled out of court. For real money I might add not some BS freerolls and a couple of lame ass FTP Jerseys.
