Letter from Steve Lipscomb

Just received the letter from Steve Lipscomb at the W.P.T. and I think it's excellent.  I have heard a lot from various pros with a lot more to lose than I have about this release the WPT has us sign.  Even to the point of rumors saying no WPT in Aruba, etc.  I have signed this release, the release for the UBT, etc, as have virtually all the top pros and top 50 p5s players, and I felt strongly that they were overstating this issue.  I hope this letter helps calm the situation and gets everyone back on track.

I'm gonna sign it again in the Bahamas and this letter makes me think even more strongly that I can feel comfortable doing so.

I welcome any comments.

I certainly never have advocated a boycott.  Nor have i asked anyone to make a sacrifice and not play a WPT event on my say so.  No pro, that I am aware of, has advocated a boycott nor asked anyone not to play.  All I have wanted to do is make people aware of what they are signing away if they sign the release.  I am certainly not going to be angry or upset with anyone who chooses to sign the release and play.  Everyone should make their own decisions on the matter.  I just want it to be an informed decision.

Also, my comparison to the NFL was only in terms of players retaining their own licensing rights.  I am not under the delusion that my not playing a WPT event will hurt the WPT in any way at all.  I hope I never implied that in anything I wrote because I don't think that in the least.

It seems that some of the pros are in between a rock and a hard place on this.

What’s going to happen is that some of the pros are going to rightfully, and logically not sign this agreement.

Players (unknowns) like me are going to play the events, and sign the release because we won’t think about the future since winning the event would completely change our lives in the first place (admittedly, we shouldn’t sign, but we will).

The WPT will thrive without the pros because although people definitely like to see the Annie Dukes, and other pros, people watch for various other reasons.  In addition, new personalities always emerge…I’m sure someone has said this, but “there can be a new Chris Moneymaker every event.”  (Insert another name if that makes you throw up a little.)

So, the pros (that are contemplating not signing, or not signing at all) have to decide whether to gamble, and hope that somehow the WPT doesn’t thrive in their absence.  That really "seems" (key word) to be their only hope of getting the words on this release to change.  Of course, if they've no need for the WPT, then this becomes a non-issue.
