LOOKING TO TAKE THE LEAP AS A PRO

I have been doing very well playing cash games from 1-2 to 2-5 NL live, and won a $220 tourney last saturday (came in 3rd in my first one) there is one per month at the room i play at, online i have been steadily playing mtt's/sng's winning a little here and there then cashing out, but i am looking to make the jump and quit my job which i make jack-diddly at...

i would like to grind just MTTs online and prolly sngs....i would like to play $5-$55 MTTs, and figure i need a bankroll of $5000 to play these comfortably 5 days a week (sunday - thursday) and $5000 bankroll to play live 3 nights a week (and there is a $60 tourney about 30 ppl monday night and tuesday night, with 1 $220 a month on saturday) and so if i have around $3,000 in the bank for expenses (rent, util, food, spending money) i would like to make around $400 a week as that would be equal to what i get after taxes at my job currently....is this possible, what should i fear with this bankroll, and how would i go about cashing out and such? i would play on FTP, PStars and Cake

When I started to take poker seriously a couple years ago I started with a 3-5k roll. Its definately doable barring you can control your emotions, are a winning player, and know how to manage money. Alot of friends, family, and haters were laughing at me at the time. Now im the one laughing(cue Brian Urlacher commercial)

weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

EZ life when u ship a score most of us won't get all at one time.  Keep it realistic lol.

Before that I had about 150k profit with nothing more than a 10k score(2). Most all of that profit was from from tournies $50> which is VERY realistic.

I HIGHLY recommend you have at least 20k in the bank and 20k online bankroll before you even consider it

I hope this doesn't sound like I'm trying to call you out or anything because I think you're a probably a  cool guy and I know you're valued member of this site.  But isn't this a little overboard?  I mean, how much did you have in the bank and online when you decided to do this as a primary source of income?

I agree with threeven on this.  I live in a very expensive area so i may be a bit off, but I think you can go bust ez if u only have say 10k online and 5k in the bank.
20k/20k sounds about right.

and to the OP:  you are in NO WAY ready...you may think you are, but in 6 months or a year you will regret this decision...guranteed

I have a feeling that the OP will not take the advice in this thread tho.

I would guess that in the 4-5 years that I've been reading PocketFives.com I've probably read hundreds, maybe even a thousand "should I turn pro" posts.

Funnily enough, 99% of them were told it was a terrible idea, but 99% of them did it anyway.

Not surprisingly, most of them have never been heard from again.

If you have to ask if you should turn pro - the answer is almost certainly a resounding no.

Thats what Im saying, I did it with less than that and I regret it.

I'm simply offering advice. If I could talk to myself a few years ago I would say the exact same thing.

Rule #10, bankroll management, if you ignore this rule it's so damaging.  If you aint got 100 buyin's just say HELL NO cuz when you play outside your roll you gonna go broke.-10 Card Commandments (Pokerrapper suka, yeah I thought you'd like that)

Threeven is pretty much spot on, as he has been there and stated he started with too little of money.  The only people you should take advice from is people who are pros or have tried it.  I didnt even consider going pro til I had an 80k life roll, and I still don't even think it was a great decision.  The swings suck, its stressful, and I seriously don't think I'd do it with 20k bank 20k online.  I would honestly recommend at least 25-30k banked and like 15-20 online (I cant offer advice on SNG bankrolls cuz I play MTTs and a little cash).  Menlo didn't drop out of college til he had 1M (or at least I thought I heard/read that).  I might be a little biased cuz my expenses per month are closer to ~3k and I can't really fathom only needing $850 to live monthly...but I'm just saying.

yeah threeeven is deff close to it, its good advice which im sure he didnt follow as so many poeple. i wish i worked 6 months longer. that varience thing hits hard when it does and now im in  a shitty spot with the roll i should have had but cashed out every month for bills.

at a min count on 4x your rent a month. so thats like $1600, have 6 months ready, wish i had....... so thats like 8k in bank, you want to be at a min avg. 2k a month, and thats not growing roll much, so i fu think u can play 500 tourneys a month you prob need a 15-20 dollar avg buy in. so roll needs to be atleast 3k-5k.

youd have a shot with those numbers assuming you play well. (no idea how you play) so dont take that wrong way.... gl
