Greetings everyone, longtime reader first-time poster.
Last Saturday, the 16th, Pokerroom.com ran their Christmas tournament, which was advertised to every player on the site as a $20+2 NL MTT with additional prizes of an HDTV for first and Pokerroom merchandise for 2nd-10th. Cruising around the site, I thought about playing in said tournament, and when I popped into the lobby for said tournament, it advertised a $19000 guarantee. As there were only about 200 players registered at the time, the overlay was rather large so I decided that I would definitely play.
I won. $3,829.81 and a $2000 HDTV. For my first big score in an MTT. That's not why I am here today, however.
Yesterday morning I received an email from Pokerroom informing me that there had been a mistake in the payouts. They claimed that I was only due $404.75 and would thus have $3,425.06 removed from my account immediately. And oh, by the way, they were letting me keep my $22 buyin and, if I finished in the top 10, whatever bonus prize I earned. They didn't even have the decency to look into matters closely enough to realize that I was not only in the top 10, but the winner.
For a 265 person tourney with no guarantee at the $20+2 level, first place pays $1590 on Pokerroom. I looked it up. That, however, is not the point here. Pokerroom has decided that they can arbitrarily enter people's accounts and remove large portions of their bankrolls on a whim. They have also decided that, not only can they renege on claims of a guarantee, but they can also advertise "extra" prizes but actually use people's tourney buyins to cover the costs of said "extras" whilst systematically reducing the cash payouts for everyone in their tournaments.
Pokerroom's support team has handled this in a laughably unprofessional manner, ignoring all arguments about the meaning of the word "extra" and attempting to liken the situation to a bank accidentally putting extra money in your account and claiming that the money never belonged to us in the first place. This tournament ran for 5 hours and 15 minutes. Those payout levels were posted the entire time, and pretty much everyone who made the final table has screenshots of their payouts. A large number of players in the tournament likely only played in said event because of the overlay, and a large number of previously happy players who cashed in this tournament are now receiving either merely their buyin back or a one-of-a-kind, super valuable PokerRoom travel kit in lieu of any cash prizes. Not as extra prizes as advertised, mind you, but in lieu of actual prizes.
Scams like this cannot be allowed to continue. There are always concerns about legitimacy and legality in the online poker world (generally voiced by all our friends and family who don't play), but the poker world would not have advanced to the point it has if every major poker website was allowed to treat its customers in this manner. I have removed all remaining cash from my Pokerroom account, and I urge all of you to strongly consider how confident you are in the security of your accounts before doing business with Pokerroom.com ever again. I hope that you will all spread knowledge of this incident throughout the online poker community in the hopes that awareness leads to a positive resolution for all online poker players.
Thank you for your time.
Zander

Threads saying how bad UB is: 1 per day. Threads saying how bad Bodog software is: 2-3 per day. Threads bashing some other random site: every other day.
Total amount of negative posts on this whole board on PokerStars: 1
I made a post about how poorly PookerRoom handled the $5000 event that was played in Barcelona, it's good to see they have moved up from just making poor decisions to downright scamming players!

oo please, many people dont like pokerstar's software but they just dont say anything about it. the only ones who say they dont like bodog's software are the ones who like pokerstar's but just feel like venting.
i personally love bodog's software but i am not going around bashing pokerstars

first of all the threads that bash bodog are always about their software or cashout times when it comes to support and player help there is no site better bodog has 24hour personal support with one phone call

According to other members of the FT they haven't gotten anything yet. Think they gave me money to keep me quiet?
Just wanted to say thanks to all of you for the support I have gotten thus far today.

I had the same problem once with there servers crashing and getting blinded off in a heads up match.
I called multiple times and after waiting for a long time on hold I spoke to someone on some TERRIBLE phone.
I sent 5 emails and pretty much got no response.
How do i know it was there servers that crashed? Everyone was screaming in the chat rooms how they couldnt get back into their games.

all references to this site should be stripped from pocketfives. they are a scam site and I would not even play a freeroll there.

I read the entire thread on Pokerroom's forums only to find out you have to deposit to post :(
This is nothing short of bait-and-switch and should be taken very seriously by everyone in the community. I realize they no longer offer services to US customers so you might not care, but you should! This is exactly the scenario we face if Frist's law comes to fruition. Many underground pokerrooms will spring up with no regulation or course of action when things go bad.
The negative publicity generated by this thread should have a huge impact on pokerrooms ability to collect rake. They stand to lose far more than $19,000 by not quietly resolving this issue and paying the players in full.
Here is what I have seen from reading the thread on their forums:
1) They sent out adverts via email and on their page that were correct. Play for chance to win prizes.
2) The tournament registration page was incorrect, advertizing a 19k guaranteed prize pool. People who did not see the email adverts would be led to believe *gasp* there was a 19k prize pool.
3) When the tournament was complete, the tourney lobby showed the payouts adding up to 19k guaranteed PLUS the prizes.
4) They're terms of service (TOS) states that prizes will be paid out as per the tourney lobby (see #3).
5) They withdrew player funds without notification (taking all funds from one guys account.. what a shitty way to go busto).
6) In they're defense, they claim this was a mistake and the tournament lobby should have never said 19k guaranteed. How it did, they have yet to explain
7) The forum moderators have compared this to a bank accidently depositing more money in your account than what you actually deposited. In reality, this is BAIT AND SWITCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They advertised a product/service (tournament) with a prizepool for which people could pay money to play in and try and win.
8) They have SECRETLY offered the winner 2k as "hush money" yet only offer $100 to everyone else in the money including 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. None of these players are aware Zander was offered this and they have denied this offer exists in writing.
9) Pokerroom blows.. that is all

Hush money is an insult. I'm glad you've got as much traction as you have, but if someone stole $3400 from me and returned $2000 with an apology, I'd still be hunting them down for my last $1400.
Fight the good fight. You are in the right.
