Stupid Poker After Dark comment from Raymer

Poker players who have had tournament success never look more like financial idiots than when they say something as stupid as Greg Raymer did in Poker After Dark.  He revealed to the table that he played a golf match vs. Gavin Smith for 1 million dollars per hole.  Whether this is true or not doesn't matter as much as the fact that he claimed to have done this and is owed 1 million by Gavin.  Playing poker for big money is one thing, as over the long term, better players will win more,  but playing a million per hole in golf is out of Raymer's net worth by a factor or at least 1000.  Even Tiger Woods couldn't afford to play golf for a million a hole.  I think perhaps Bill Gates and Warren Buffett could, but unless you have at least $10 billion in net worth, you just come across looking like a financial buffoon.

One word, "handicap" . There is a reason for this system in golf. I think there are several people who would play tiger for a million a hole and half of them are poker players. If they could agree to the amount of shots he would give then I think he would have a game. I would play tiger off my handicap if he would play off about a plus 6(obv not a mill a hole).  I once heard Dewey Tomko say that if they had to put up there own money he would take Doyle over tiger or Jack Nicklaus to putt for a million dollars everyday of the week.

LOL, Dewey is super rich, owns golf courses etc. I could probably take $500 and put it up against Dewey over and over again doubling it each time obv, anyway I would eventually own his homes, golf course, etc etc 99/100 times.

Reminds me of an old Skins game where they were talking about the "pressure" of having to sink a putt in order to win $75,000 on a hole.  Lee Trevino laughed and said, "Pressure?  That isn't pressure.  Pressure is when you play for five dollars a hole with only two in your pocket."

fyi Jtown. They say Dewey is the best golf gambler in the world. He has taken millions off of Michael Jordan, Davis Love III and Nicky Price on several different occasions. I doubt you would take him out 99 times out of 100

i almost fell off my chair laughing when i read Tiger cant afford it comment he makes over 10 mill per season playing golf and over 60 milly from endorsements

I don't think that It's his first season i would estimate he's worth over 250 mill and would play anyone in the world at 1 mill per hole

My point, which few if any of you obviously understood, was NOT that Tiger Woods doesn't have a huge edge over everyone in golf, or that he isn't the best ever.  My point is that playing golf for a million dollars a hole, unless you are a billionaire, is like the average citizen with a $1million net worth playing blackjack at $1000 a hand.  It is totally disproportionate and makes no financial sense whatsoever.  Assume for a moment that Tiger's edge in golf was more similar to whomever you think is the world's best NL holdem player, instead of clearly the best in the world.  Even if you generously give Tiger a $500 million net worth, he cannot afford to play a game at $1 million per hand, or 1 million bb level poker, or per hole.
