Taking advantage of the FEAR of not cashing in a low-limit SNG. (long but good--must read for low limit players)

Come play the end of a SNG with me!  I am PunkinBear on FTP.  In the endgame of a SNG, there are often a few spots where raising with nothing is profitable.  This particular SNG had several of those spots, and I'd like to share my thoughts on each hand (in bold)

tommyk raises to 630, and is all in

Tommyk has a stack of 3.9xBB, and is next to take the BB.  Therefore I range him pretty wide.  I range him on J10, Q9+, K8+, A2+, 22+.

My ATo fares quite well against his range, (about a 55-45 fave), but this is a situation where if I just call I will be potentially forced in by another player if they do have a hand, so I consider this a raise/fold spot.  I pass up the smallish 55-45 edge to avoid the three players behind me potentially putting me in grave danger.

PunkinBear raises to 600

Standard raise with any two cards here.  Ludedude is in a position where he would have to risk his third place standing to double, and potentially miss cashing.  He feels the FEAR and folds.  Since Lude will likely fold 75% or more of his holdings, it is correct to raise with any two.

Let's take away my cards (give me a Barry Bonds Rookie and a Draw Four Uno card instead) and do the math.

If I raise to 600 and win, I win 200.
If I raise to 600 and get called/reraised, I lose 600.

Since 200x3=600x1, if he folds 75% of the time, I can raise with air!

Say he folds 80% of the time for instance:

In 100 trials, I win 200 chips when he folds, 80 times for a total of 16000 chips.
In 100 trials, I lose 600 chips when he plays, 20 times for a total of 12000 chips.
That's +4000, and divided by 100, thats 40 chips per hand.  VERY +EV!

A 40 chip gain per hand, raising with air!  The fact that I have cards at all is just a bonus here.

So.... what's 75%?  KJ is a hand that beats 75% of all of the hands out there.  So if you feel your opponent will fold KJ here, whether because he is tight, or the situation demands it, it's go time!

Raising based on hand strength here.  Though I suspect the BB might fold enough to justify a raise with anything, I'm not looking to mess with the player that can hurt me the most just yet, especially since I have been active, and I'm not sure yet whether race has it in his repertoire to fight back without a hand.

4x with ATo.  Good time to raise, but I dislike the amount.  3x will do.  This raise effectively gives race the chance to shove, potcommitting Lude.  If he reraises 3x, he can get away if race reraises.  Since race has not shown a propensity to raise with nothing, ensuring you are not pot committed here is the best way.

race62 raises to 480

This UTG minimum raise means one of two things:

- He is slowplaying a monster (AA-KK)
- He has a "sort of" good hand that he doesn't want to commit himself with, being that there is an alive shortstack. (Q9+, K8+, A2-A9, 22-66)

Note:  I put A10-AK, 77-QQ out of his range here.  Most likely he will raise more with these strong but vulnerable holdings.

ScientistSET folds
PunkinBear folds

With the range above, and the likelihood that Race FEARS not cashing, I should reraise because most likely the only hands in his range that he calls are AA-KK.  If he is particularly loose for this level, which we haven't seen an indication of, he will also call KQ, A9, 22-66.  The A7 I have defends nicely against all but the A9.  Reraise to 1440 is the correct play with the shortstack still alive.  If Science wasn't here, fold is best.

I missed this spot, because race would lay down to a reraise more often than 75% of the time, given the range that I put him on.

This is a mistake.  Since I have been involved very often, I must have a wide range of hands, and would have to fold 75%+ of the time to a reraise.  Lude should reraise with any two.  Since he's not playing back, I'm shooting all day long.

PunkinBear raises to 900

Here, Science is in the BB, and is committed.  I am raising on hand strength only.

ludedude128 raises to 1,500

Lude reraises and plays back for the first time.  I assume he has a very good hand (big pair, AK, AQ).  His bet is horrible though, as I must call 600 more to see a pot of what will be 3450, and a flop.

PunkinBear checks

This flop is no good.  I check, intending to fold to any bet.

ludedude128 checks

Since there are draws out there and slowplaying gives away free cards, I must assume that Lude missed.  AK is the most likely scenario.  77, 99 are possibilities, as is AJ.

*** TURN *** [8d Ts Qh] [Ks]

The turn is a double edged sword.  It gives me a 26% one card nut draw.  However, the King very likely improved lude's hand.

PunkinBear checks

I check, trying to keep the pot small, hoping Lude will make a bet-sizing error.

ludedude128 bets 1,000

Which is a bet-sizing error.  Lude should fire a real bet at this.  FEAR.

PunkinBear raises to 5,470, and is all in

I have 3 options here, fold, call, raise allin....let's look at all three:

Call:

I only need a 18% chance of winning the hand to make this call because 1000 (my call) is 18% of what the pot will be if I call (5450).  My draw is worth 26%.  If I was last to act on the next betting round, this would be my choice, because I would have that extra read.

Fold:

Since we have determined that calling gives us an 8% edge, folding is out of the question.  The fold is too weak here.

Reraise allin:

If I reraise allin, my bet is effectively 3700 into a pot of 5450.  I only need to make him fold 38% of the time with this bet.  I do not believe I have that much chance here.  However, when you subtract the 26% chance I have of making my hand, he must fold merely 12% of the time for this shove to work!

Given these factors:

- He has been playing scared, and FEARS not cashing.
- My checkraise reps a real hand.
- My AK read might be off.

I easily have the 12% I need.  Since I am out of position, this is the play I use, effectively removing any position advantage he has on the river.

The moral of the story, is to apply pressure until you suspect your opponents will play back with nothing.  Hope you had fun, and learned something!

I rarely, if ever, find people who will just lay down like wimps on an $11 sng bubble like this.  I'm not sure if all of this is good advice because a lot of the time the low stakes opponent will either not realize he is making a bad bubble play, not even know what the bubble is, or have little to no regard for his $10 buy in.  Many seem to have large egos as well so they will call you with A2, QJ, KT,33 etc if they think they are ahead, bubble or not.

Good post, you definitely exploited the hell out of those weak opps, but I justt hought it should be noted that low stakes sngs will not play out like this very often.

Great reply Quantum

That's a very good point that allows me to clarify something.

In this SNG there were several situations where raising was appropriate because of, specifically, the stack sizes.  Low limit SNGs usually progress like this....

Loose players throw cash around, and the skilled players and tight rocks pick it up.  The game is loose.

The as it gets closer to the cash, the weak-tight players outnumber the loose ones.  The game is tight, and they are afraid.

In most SNGs, this allows for just a few circumstances where this stack poker can be used,  ands this SNG was used by me to demonstate these spots only because a lot of opportunities exist.

Definitely not advising you play like a moronic maniac.  If you are going to employ this strategy, you had better have been paying attention to your opponents and pick on the right sized stacks.

Otherwise you might find yourself making a crazy play in say, hands #30, 32, 33, 36, 37, 38, 42, 45, or 58.  Most hands in late SNG play are more like these... a point Quantum brought up very correctly!

due to VERY poor br management, I was down about 1.5k before I discoered P5s and learned about br management.

Then I met jennifear.  I'm up almost 1k since I met her and if you doubt that players at $10 level would adhere to her instructions or "fall" for this type of solid play , check out my recent graphs for $10sng on sharkscope.

Never.  Question.  Jennifear.  That is all :)

I did read through your entire post Jennifear and I completely understand the basis of your post. I respect your game and can see by your numbers that you are a successful player.  However, for you to think that you ran through this specific sit and go because you were taking advantage of the fear in the other players of not cashing is absurd.  Typically at that level players are more recreational so they are calling off their chips with weaker holdings. I just think your giving low- limit beginners false hope to self promote. Post 10 sit and gos within a reasonable timespan that turned out like the one above and you'll make me a believer.

P.S.  I would like to sign up or be put on the list for one of your training sessions. Hope your not afraid of black guys.

TY jdro

Very nice recent results by the way.

I know things had been shaky, but you toughed it out.

It's amazing how much your discipline and play have both improved tremendously.

I feel bad that I fought back so hard Gussy, I guess what you said just struck a nerve, lol.  I'll chalk it up to hormones for an excuse if you'll allow me to.  I'm sorry.

Let me address all your points, because they are good ones....

- I would be hard-pressed to come up with 10 SNGs where there were so many situations where raising with nothing was an option.  Even when I played 5-10 SNGs/day, I would be lucky to get one a week of this variety.  In most SNGs there are just a few situations where making the raising with nothing play works.

- Attacking the midstacks with four left actually works better at the lowest levels where they make ridiculous plays.  Not only do they make ridiculous calls, but they make ridiculous folds too!  These guys play to cash, and don't play to win when there are four left.  They really want to slide up the pay scale.  Even some of the chipleaders at the $5-10 levels sit back and wait the bubble out, figuring they can coast to the money.  You just don't see that at the $50 level and up very often.

- My post wasn't for the purpose of self-promotion, though I could see how it could be mistaken for that.  I started charging for lessons in September, and a quick look through my post history would show you that I made several strategy posts well before that.

- I would love to sign you up for a session, but I have a concern.  Your stats show a 20% ROI over a reasonable sample at an avg stake of $84.00.  I haven't acheived that sort of success yet, I specialize in teaching low-limits, and I have just broken through to the medium stakes, and won't challenge the higher stakes until I have a great sample size at the medium stakes.  Though maybe someday I will be able to advance to teaching that level, I fear you may not get your money's worth if I were to take your money for a lesson.  It is my first priority to make sure that all of my students get their money's worth.  That said, if you feel you could still benefit, shoot me a quick email or PM, and I'll respond tonight :)

- I'm not afraid of black guys.  Hope your not afraid of feisty blondes :)
