Ive gotten quite a few requests to do this, although I don't feel like I should (I'm not the caliber of player in previous wells), but Ill give it a go since Im taking next week off. Im sure by now you all know what a well is, but here is the explanation:
"A stranger is being shown around a village that he has just become part of. He is shown a well and his guide says "On any day except Tuesday, you can shout any question down that well and you'll be told the answer." The man seems pretty impressed, and so he shouts down, "Why not on Tuesday?" A voice from in the well shouts back, "Because on Tuesday, it's your day in the well."
I'll answer any question you have about playing professionally, the game, myself, or any random question you have that might not even to do with poker."
Im newish to mtts and around here. My name is Mer, Im a girl, and 28. Ive grown up in Atlanta (Georgia) and still live here, but travel a ton. I've always been consumed with competitive sports or hobbies my whole life, horse back riding took up the majority of 15+ years. After a few injuries I had to give up on some things at top levels but still found ways to continue in other areas. All this happened at about the right time because I had to make some life choices, either keep going with horse back riding or go to college, unfortunately it made that choice easy.
I moved to Athens (UGA), got a double degree - B.S. in psychology, B.A. in biology, and a minor in legal studies. I had planned on going to medical school but opted on getting my masters in clinical psychology and then on to my PhD instead. Part of the way through grad school my mother had a stroke which left her paralyzed on one side, we also found lung cancer at that time. Needless to say I put my school on hold and moved home to care for her. When she passed away I remained home to help with things, including my brothers, one had just started college and the other was still in high school.
I started playing poker...hrrmm...I guess about 4+ years ago. My ex-whatever you want to call him got me into poker. I was the typical naive person about it and gave him some crap about playing, after over a year of him trying to convince me to play I caved and gave it a go, which turned out surprisingly well! I deposited $100 and never had to redeposit again. I started out at low stakes full ring limit holdem, ran well...cause lord knows I didnt play good....and moved up fairly quickly. I made the transition from full ring to 6-max at around 5/10 about 6-8 months in. I played limit games (mainly holdem) from 15/30 to 200/400 for the majority of the last few years. At the start of 08 I decided to switch it up a little and play some nl cash, it went well at first but I got bored of it quickly. Around the same time I started playing more tournaments, I had always played a few here and there but nothing too serious. In April I went out of the country for a few months (I don't play when I travel) so I didn't fully get into mtts until August or so. Around October a lot of different "life" things happened which resulted in me having to be home the majority of the time (before I was gone almost half the year) so I figured it would be a good time to give tournaments a spin. So here I am 7ish months later....
Im not sure if this is going to answer most of the questions I get non stop or just create more of a havoc, but I guess we will see!!

What are 10 tips you would say MOST players under your abilities/skill level do mistake wise in MTT play and what things can they do to make themselves better players (please be as specific as possible).
Thank you, you are an achiever and a success, well done.
Well I dont think my skill/ability are over a lot of peoples so Ill just answer it in general! These are also going to be more skewed to my personality and may not the combination "everyone" needs....
1. Dont tilt - to me this is the difference between a good player and a great player.
2. Bank roll management - you have to learn this from the start, otherwise sure you might "run something up" but you will never maintain that money in any fashion. Shots arent out of the question but you have to follow your stop loss and not bust yourself doing it! (this might be more relevant in cash but Im sure applies to mtts as well)
3. Ask questions - there are no dumb questions, only rude people who are arrogant enough to assume they know "better" than you. If you dont ask, or care to find out, you wont improve.
4. Review your play - I have countless files of hand histories that I have saved. As I go through sessions I copy/paste hand histories Im not sure on, think Ive made a mistake in, confused about a players line, etc...and review them later. This has enabled me to catch quite a few things I wouldnt have otherwise, thus improve quicker.
5. Good attitude - you cant get all gloom and doom during bad hands, sessions or runs, it only hurts you. You have taken bad beats before, you have had bad runs before...but you have also given bad beats in the past and run like god at some point...it will all come around!! Besides, things could always be worse!!
6. Surround yourself with positive people - Im very picky with who I am "good" friends with in poker. I am the type of person that takes on the emotions of people around them...so like if someone is panicked or worried I will try and fix that, if I cant help then I get worried about them and if Im playing it would distract me. The majority of people in poker cant control their emotions, so if you pair them with another person who has the same problem it is then amplified. If someone is constantly sending or telling me about bad beats it makes me more conscious of my bad beats, which serves zero purpose for me in poker. There is no reason to allow more negative in your life, especially while playing poker! For me, this also applies to close friends and significant others, I wont have people around that stress me in any fashion. If you had a fight with someone close to you or a boyfriend/girlfriend, I would recommend taking the day off, no matter what you think you arent going to be up to par emotionally or mentally. If it becomes a constant problem then Id seriously consider removing that person from my life (and not just because of poker!)
7. Time management - you need a good balance between life and poker. You have to give yourself a break to maintain a positive mentality. I play a set schedule or time every session and avoid "adding" onto that. If I am having a rough day I wont add more mtts, if anything I will take a few off. There is always tomorrow, there is no need to stress!
8. Patience - dont misplay hands because "I havent had a hand in forever!!!" or "hes 3 bet me 4 times in a row!!!". There have been many times where Ive gotten a hand and had a marginal spot (if it was even a spot at all) and I talked some sense into myself and then been dealt AA/KK/etc the next hand!! Obviously this isnt often, but it does happen! Just stay relaxed and play the best you can at every moment, there is no point in over rushing it with mistakes!
9. Breaks - have hours, days, or weeks that you take off. Take a vacation!! Get away, dont play poker!! Itll be there when you get back!! Make sure you are enjoying your life.
10. Humor - you gotta make light of a lot of things, especially when playing poker. Laughing is by far my favorite thing to do, and if Im laughing Im not stressing and thats important while I play. It takes your mind off the negative and focuses on the positive. I bring it all the way down to even bad beats, if someone got there, jokes on me....if someone played bad, jokes on them! If a friend takes a bad beat Ill make a funny face, weird noise, tell them some random useless out-of-this world bogus fact, show them a funny video, or find some other way to make an ass out of myself. It really does make a difference, but then again everyone is different....

Hi PeachyMer, thanks for doing this.
1) Did you game require major transition to move from cash to MTTs? Which do you enjoy more (limit, NL, or MTTs)? Which do you see more profit/hr?
2) Do you find any issues (positive or negative) about playing on the highest level as a female?
3) Do you have any major live scores?
4) Is there any difference between sunblock15 or sunblock45?
5) What do you enjoy most about the game?
1. I dont feel like I had a major transition between cash and mtts, but I am sure one happened. Like I said, I adjust fast. On top of that, when Ive moved to other areas of poker I put in an obscene amount of time and hands at the beginning...so that transition gets skewed. I enjoy limit the most, followed by mtts. Ive never been real good at figuring out my hourly but I would say lately its higher in mtts. If the limit games were as good better and I played them as much as I used to it would be higher there I would assume.
2. There will always be issues playing at the higher levels and being a girl, its 99% guys! It works both ways so the benefits and consequences even out. I feel if you are a solid player, despite your gender, then circumstantial stuff really cant hurt you. With that mentality I think being a girl only benefits me. I cant change the way people view me as a player, but I can keep it from bothering me on any level. Being seen as a bad player, weak, stupid, airheaded, etc cant do anything but help me.
3. No, live I have played cash only.
4. I think I remember some random fact that there is no difference? But it seems more logical that one number lets more UV rays through than the other? I really have no idea because I dont use sunscreen/block!!! Sorry!!
5. the competitiveness and creativity

1. how come most americans are ignorant and clueless about politics and important issues regarding our country and it's future while u actually have a clue (and me obv)?
2. Do u feel that there should be some type of test or qualification in order to vote other than just being a US citizen so the ignorant masses dont potentially decide our fate?

Great stuff, thank you for your time. You def have the right attitude, and from everything I get out of what you say, that's something I can always better.
Look forward to seeing what else you have to say with the QandA post.

Whats up with the roar?
Has it been easier to get advice talk with top players because you are a girl?
Please will you finally post a pic for the poker community?
What do you think is your strongest aspect of your tourney game, and how do you apply it in situations during your sessions?
What do you think is you weakest aspect of your tourney game, and how do you try to stay away from it in situations during your sessions?
What is the best way that you have found to improve your tourney game?
And finally:
All the bickering in the wedding ring thread were those your actual thoughts or were you just stirring the pot? Would you marry someone cause you were so in love with them or do they HAVE to be rich and you have to be pampered lol?
Its just a quirky thing I do in person
I would assume it would be easier for some girls, but I honestly talk very little poker.
Nope, sorry, I wont post pictures here
I really have no idea what my strongest aspect is. Maybe a combination of tilt control and patience. It definitely helps when I have a ton of tables and feel like Im running bad!
Weakest...hrmmm....playing too nitty. It costs me in chips for sure. Ill catch myself wanting to fold something and I have to talk myself out of it!! Its a bad habit from limit hold em.
For me its putting in tons and tons of hands, to learn from and to even out variance!!
hahah they weren't exactly my thoughts in that thread! I would never marry someone if I wasn't in love with them, Im not that type of person or girl. I have enough money of my own and I pamper myself, I do not expect any man to take care of me or spoil me. An engagement ring is important to me because it is on my finger for the rest of my life, but the type of ring is between me and my significant other. I like to hope that if I am marrying someone that they would pick out the perfect ring for me based on knowing me inside and out...but I guess we will see. Either way....if I love them I would take a cracker jack ring and adore it (I just might upgrade it for him after a few years!!)

Hi Peachy, you always come onto my tables and cheer on Kidwhowon or Balla or someone. It makes me feel left out. Maybe next time you could say: "hey [insert friend here], I hope you win, but I hope m_hawk_1 comes 2nd, because he's not so bad. Roaaaaaaaaaar! xoxo"
