UB is right to change their chat rule

Look there are going to be things that are unpopular in online poker.  But this move is necessary for online poker.  From most of the card rooms standpoint they need to protect their player base.  It has become all too common to have people recruiting from other sites in a massive way.

Party Poker used to be flat out ridiculous.

This is an easy fix.  Each site should look at having a part in their application where people can go to chat.  Separate of the tables.  I know that everyone will complain but sites lose millions of dollars unnecessarily by having chat at the tables.  If you guys can't see why they would protect themselves from this you have lost your minds.

In the mean time I would be happy to set up 2-3 sites with chat formats for people to log on to.  If anyone is interested in helping me with this project let me know.

I agree.  I'm so sick of those poker bonus sites.  Seems like they show up every 10 minutes.

really though, the advertising people only come to the cash tables, and I actually think its good for UB to take OBS chat off of cash games, for that reason and that is where most of the beggers show up. But I don't see why they take it off of SNGs....

having chat rooms with thousands of people would be insane. it would be almost impossible to moderate that.

also, why don't they just make people with chat privledges people who have real money accounts? I am pretty sure the people who are spamming the cash tables have never deposited on UB.

I disagree with beanie.

Chat is an inalienable human and dog right.

To take it away sucks.

Maybe the prev. poster had a good idea about restricting it to persons with accounts.

You make a great point but I think this has been a thorn in the side of online poker for too long and I support the decision though I am fully aware that I will be in the minority.

Won't happen.  I am telling you guys they will take the heat on this one.  Come up with a better solution.

Soon this will be par for every site.  Get used to it.

But when you think about it, how do you react when you see some fool spamming up a cash game? I don't sit there and think, "wow that is so awesome, let me take the time to sit here and type out the link" no you don't give a crap and you ignore it. They could also just not allow people to type in anything with a .com at the end.

HATE ! the no chat ..... reason i play here . Play lo limits but can still chat w/friends. This is rediculous. Each player can turn off (obs) chat if they dont like it so why make it mandatory? But I'm sure my opinion carries little weight so ............thx for the soapbox!

you can chat as an observer in MTTs, just not SNGs or cash games

It isn't about that.  Did you read my original post? They actually do have a very valid reason and you will see this trend on most sites.  I know this for fact.

Beanie,

If I'm not mistaken, you were the guy who commended UB when they took away the ability for observers to view hand history. You said it was "necessary for online poker" because they "need to protect their player base".

After a few short days of a barrage of emails ridiculing this change, they reverted back.

I predict that this 'upgrade' will have a similar fate.

P.S. Wowswift's solution is the most logical: allow chat privileges to only real money players who have made a deposit. What is wrong with this idea?

I would be willing to bet you on this one.  Name the price.  Sites weren't losing millions off of hand histories.

I still think they were wrong to cave on that one.

I think this is fine and understand why the sites do this. However, when you are eliminated from a tournament you are immediately cut off (Party). At the final table of a tournament, you cannot tell your opponents good game or anything. You are done. There need to be some adjustments to allow the players entered in a tournament to chat at that tourney, or somthing along these lines.
