I can't believe that this is real. This will, without a doubt, be a one-and-done idea if they go through with it. It will not happen again next year, because I predict it will be a disaster.

Hey everyone,

Here's the story on ESPN.com along with the list of televisted events:

http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/poker/news/story?id=3375032

I read the other thread and saw the reaction, so I'm expecting the same here. To be honest, what I saw on the other thread was my reaction too when I first heard about the change.  I couldn't believe that they would do something like this.  Then, the more I thought about it, the idea began to get better as I figured out the pros and cons.

Feel free to leave any and all feedback and I'll pass it on..

This might not be as big of an issue, the military is always looking for positive press.  If you are willing to advertise your unit, they might let you off to go and play.  Heck, they let a late draft pick to the Detroit Lions off of his duty on the off chance he might make the team as a special teams guy, and this will have more hype.

I think players here should have only one major complaint, and that's where is their cut in the prize pool?  You know money is exchanging hands and ESPN wants this psudo live, so they think there is money to be made.  Some of that money should be added to the prize pool (or each FT participant should get something here).

But, poker is a major entertainment event now.  Don't you think Kobe Bryant would rather spend Christmas with his family, than playing a rather meaningless NBA game?  NFL players constantly have to play through Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years, ruining those weeks.  This is all due to money.  The FT participants are all making over a million here, and they are playing in this event partially for the instant fame of turning 10k into 8 million.  So, you have to bend over for tv a bit, it's part of the game.

Also, my guess is this is the first of many changes for television.  I would expect that evetually, poker will be live, and they will change things (includuing blind levels) to try and ensure that the game ends on time, even if it's against the player.

whats the prescedent for this..does any other sporting event delay its championship for any length of time?

one of the things i enjoy about multi day or deepstack tournaments is the grind factor- an edge goes to someone that can bring their A game day in day out for a consecutive set of days..how many players can handle the rigor that is playing 14 hours till 2am then coming back for another 14hr day 12 hours later...

the marathon style of the main event addresses the ability to bring it day in day out over two weeks..you lose this key component by pushing out the final table date..not to mention reads etc..when someone can get coaching during the four month break, its like playing against 9 different ppl...and what about the concern of two ppl becoming friends and agreeing to softplay each other..collusion potential escalates here (harder to do when every play is under a microscope but it will still exist)...im just floored by this!

i fail to see any redeeming value for doing this..

They should definately hand out 9th place to everyone prior to the FT.

I hope they get 9 guys who are eager to chop and do not even show up for the final table.

Great idea. So you make it down to the final 9 then don't show up?  Comon, thats approaching stupidity.

I don't think it's a horrible idea for a delay, but several months is wayyyyy too long.  A couple weeks would have been better.  Then they wouldn't be going against the NFL and college football in ratings/hype as well as the opening of the NBA season AND network t.v. shows (november is sweeps weeks, where networks bring out their best).

As for someone dying sometime befoe the final table, the chances of that are slim to none HOWEVER if that was to happen, would it be a bad idea to have each player designate an alternate if he does die or is incapacitated (i.e., if I made the final table, I would have a deal in place with a top player to play for me so my family got my money if I bit the big one prior to the final table)?

I would think that would be better than having an empty seat if someone did die.  (that could also make for good t.v./ who each player would pick...)

So does everyone have to wait to get paid?  I mean if i had made final table in 06---i would have had 300 dollars to my name between the time it ended and when ft started.   300 cash---750k coming...that would be heartbreaking.
