Your reaction on your first 4 or 5 figure online tourney win

I have questions on players who have scored huge wins in oline tourneys.  I have yet to score a huge win in online poker tourney and was wondering do the sites just straight up deposit the amount in your online bank roll and if so how do you go about withdrawing like 100k online? Do you have to do it in 5k increments or if you win that much do they have a special plan or something? The last question I have is what was your reaction and what you do with your first big win, lastly do you claim your huge online toruney wins for tax purposes?

Look forward to replies :)

first 4 figure was last year, busted out of a live event around 1.30am on a friday.

got home fired up the 2.15am $10 10 minute levels on stars

chopped in my favour for 2.1k around 7.30am, celebrated, sent a few brag txts, tried to sleep had a great saturday night out.

in the last 2 months ive had three 4 figure scores + played the milly and cashed and don't know how to react, just a heater or finally crushing?

Cool thread.

I'd never won a mtt before, then in sep 08 within an hour of each other i won a $2r for $219 and a $3 f/o for $168.

Obv the money wasn't good and id previously won more in stts and cash but the feeling of winning 2 tourns on the same day was cool. Felt like a switch had gone off in my head about how to play mtts.

I've played exclusively mtts since then.....maybe it wasnt such a good thing.

I went on like a crazy huge heater for a few weeks and honestly didn't sleep for a month cause all I could think about was poker.  I then would get up next day and watch the tournament again and just see how well (slash how lucky) I really got.

started with 27 bucks in br.

won back to back 8 180's.  br at 750

won two 24 mtt buy in.  br at 7K.

won 50 mtt buy in.  br at 17K.

got 1st and 2nd in 24 and 10 buy in.  br at 23K

You try sleeping after that.

I had been playing live cash games and tournaments for about 3 years before I knew internet poker existed. I only played 1/2 thru 3/6 limit hold'em and the $100 NL games that Hawaiian Gardens and The Bicycle Casino ran. Towards the end of those 3 years I started playing $20 and $30 rebuys @ The Bike (about 15 of them) which were my first experiences in tournament poker. I was instantly hooked on tournaments and after finding out about online play, I took some of my bankroll and bought a laptop. I initially deposited $110 on Party Poker and $100 on Poker Stars.

On my first weekend of online play in late May of 2006, I final tabled a $3 LHE MTT on Stars. It was only my 4th online MTT ever so I was pretty stoked that I made a FT. I finished 6th but that being my first FT, live or online, made me want to make more FTs obv.

Keep in mind that the most $ I had made in one session of poker before playing online was $565 profit from a night at the $100 NL tables @ Hawaiian Gardens. To me, at the time, tripling my buy-in in the $100 NL game was a good day and I never really thought about making $1k.

The following month, June 2006, I got my first ever MTT win and first $1k+ score in the same tournament. It was an $11 MTT on Stars that started at 4:45pm on a Sunday evening and if I remember right, it didn't even have a guarantee or anything on it.

My best friend was at work and I remember talking to him as we made it ITM. He came over to chill and watch me when he got off work and ended up live railing the last 2 hours of my first ever win! It was pretty sweet to have him there watching the whole thing and giving me hi-5s and shit. It ended just before midnight and the celebrations we let out woke up my roommate who proceeded to ask "WTF just happened man?" And I was like "DUDE! I JUST WON THIRTY SIX HUNDO!" And he was like "FUCKING SWEET!" and went back to bed cause he had to be at work in 6 hours but whatever. Me and my BFF were obv stoked and had to go celebrate so we went to a 24 hour restaurant called The Shorehouse Cafe. Even though it was 3+ years ago I still remember what I ordered. I had steak & shrimp fettucinni and 3 Newcastle's.

Now here's the sad part for me. Ahh, if I knew then what I know now.

At the time, June 26, 2006, I didn't know PocketFives.com existed. I knew nothing of bankroll management, MTT strategy, variance, NOTHING. The money didn't get wasted or anything like that but after a shot in my first ever (and only to this day) $163 MTT, I withdrew $3300 of the $3700 I had on my account. I bought a new Cali King sized bed, a digital camera, an oz. and some other random stuff. About a month or so later I was referred to PocketFives.com by someone while playing on Stars. The knowledge I gained in the first 3 months from reading practically everything on this site made me kick myself in the ass that I withdrew that money. I really REALLY wanted to have a bankroll to use with all this stuff I was learning. Proper bankroll management, tilt control, strategy. I was learning so much but only left myself ~$400 on Stars. It would take me 2 1/2 years to get my 2nd $1k+ score and I actually had 4 of them in a span of 4 months (hooray variance) following that 2nd one but the 2 1/2 year drought while I was learning so many different things really makes me appreciate every one I get now.

At the time I'm sure I thought I was better than what I actually was. Actually, there is proof. threeven uploaded the HH to PXF for me and it's pretty funny to go back and look at. There is a hand I played in the first blind level with JJ that was just atrocious. Anyways, here that is if anyone wants to watch it MyFirstMTTwin

Now I guess it's time for my first 5 figure score! I hope you guys enjoyed the read because it took me about 25 minutes to craft this whole post.

Really good read so far, with some funny stuff in it. I'll try not to ruin it :)

The night Sands crushed my soul HU in the 750K went as follows:

From 18 people left till the end, every time someone busted, my wife would text her brother with the news, along with my position and the payout ATM. Meantime, me and one of my backers were trying to get in touch with his partner, but despite a few dozen phone calls and text messages, we failed.

Once the tourney was over, I stared at my FTP cashier with the biggest smile I've ever had in my life, though it didn't last long, cause less than 5 minutes after the tourney was over, I had sent 40K to my backers.

After like 10 cigarettes in 15 minutes, I tried to go to bed, but it was completely impossible to sleep. I woke up, went to my couch, opened the laptop, and read over and over again the thread someone made about it, refreshing the page every 10 secs to see if there was a new post in it.

At around 4am, AJKHoosier showed up on AIM, and that night I had my first talk ever with "the man". I said "hey, I can't sleep", assuming he knew what had happened, only to find out he had no fucking idea about it. Once I told him, he congratulated me, wished me gl sleeping, and told me a short version of what he did when he hit his first nice score, which, I learned later, was a very long conversation to his standards (his AIM convos are legendarily short, although he's getting better, lol).

Anyways, at some point in the middle of the night, a guy in Greenville, SC, wakes up with the need of taking a leak, checks what time is it in his cell phone, and finds out that he has like 50 missed calls and even more text messages. He wonders WTF has happened in the world while he was sleeping, only to find out that he has made a lot of money during said sleep. That guy is known around here as "wmmcl", and he owes me the non-sex related most pleasant awakening of his life.

That was the first of like 5-6 days of no sleep for me, since as I was recovering from the shock, 3 days later I luck sacked my way to win the PS NHG for 22K more, and all the craziness started over again.

Everything since has proved me to be a major fluke, but that's another story...

Wow, did not know that my original thread would get this many replies, this is awesome.  I have had a blast reading all of these responses and makes it feel like a real community as we share our wins and stories on success.

I have a full tiem job, so I try to do one tourney when i get home and then several on Saturday and Sunday, trying to build the bankroll and am focusing on the guaranteed tourneys for $6 or $11 buy ins right now.  Have cashed but no 4 figure score yet.

I think i would just jump out of my chair and fist pump silently and feel like a baller.  I did come in 2nd in a limit tourney.  I never had played limit and thought i was entering in a NL tourney, but it was limit by mistake.  I came in 2nd out of about 197 people, and 2nd was like $200 bucks and I felt such validation, but wanted first so badly.  Never did Limit again, maybe i should?

I won the double deuce for $31k several months back and that was over 4 times my largest score.  It was about 2:30 in the morning and I had to be at work at 6:30.  I went upstairs, woke my wife, and tried to get some......notice I said wife......she rolled over and went back to sleep.  GG

I got about 2 hours sleep and walked on cloud nine the next day at work.

Pay ur damn taxes!!

first 4 figure score online was the 5r on full tilt in january 08 i think. it was like 1700 for the win and i was super excited. i took a screen shot of the lobby after the tourney was over and circled my name and the prizepool and sent the pic to all of my friends i used to play home games with in college. it felt super unreal. i must have gotten like 20 phone calls from friends about it. I couldnt sleep. i wish i could get that feeling back. fast forward to last week when i final tabled the 750k for 36k, i was so dissappointed i didnt win. that even 3 days later even though the extra money is nice there will be nothing like that first 4 figure score! ever.

My first big win came when I chopped a 3r 4 ways for like $3k or something like that.  It was strange, my first 3 4 figure scores came within 4 days of each other (may 15th-17th of 2007) so the last and biggest one kinda just felt like icing on the cake.  I had been cold since then and unable to hit anything decent til I hit a heater early in july of this month, chopping the 8 freeze on PS for like 2100 and then taking 2nd in a 3r on FT for 1100 (shoulda won it).   Still yet to find that 5 figure score yet.  The worst 4 figure score I got came when I got 15th in the bodog 100k - Aaron Kanter crushed my soul by beating me in a flip AQo vs TT for a final table stack - 1st was 25k, I think Kanter went on to win it or take 2nd, I can't remember =\

I still remember the feeling of winning this underground poker clubs mtt they had every wednesday, it was for about 600 i was 17 and definetly the happiest person in the world at the time.

when i was finally 18, i had been playing a little bit online, starting with 4.40s. i was working 3 jobs at the time 60+ hours a week then snapped my collar bone snowboarding. 2 weeks later, i have 150 in my account, play the 109 at 1am, and end up coming 2nd to THAYER for 5000+ never been so happy.

it took me a solid 2 years to finally break through on a 5 fig score, i finally really crushed that when i shipped the 55r on a sunday for 29k and i remember just being super calm, really baked and just a feeling of fina-fucking-ly. anyways, big time fluke for sure but you know how it is.
