Two guys at Case Western Reserve University completed a study of ~1000 hands with a control group and a treatment group. The treatment group was given basic strategy materials, and both groups played the same amount of hands against computer software.
Both groups posted losing sessions, but the treatment group significantly outperformed the control group after instructional materials were introduced.
Interesting stuff, hopefully the fact that academics are getting involved now will only help out.

1000 hands is meaningless.
Its the effort that counts tho.

yeah, they were trying to simulate a certain number of hours at a casino poker table; i think it was something like 30 hours they said, i cant quite recall

Well, I guess it would depend on how large the groups were. If the groups are a hundred people each, that would produce a more reliable sample.

LOL at needing to do this study.
This is like doing a study that 2+2=4. Or what color the sun is.
It's quite obvious. Couldn't they just pull long-term results from top players online? Couldn't they just look at the fact that the same players win again and again? Or that players like Doyle Brunson have been successful for ohhhhhhhhhhhh say 50 years or so?
Still I'm glad they did it. The more press like this the better.

Doyle Brunson was a cheat most of his poker career. Poker is 50% skill and 50% luck.

I know several people who classify playing poker online in the same category as video poker machines... some people are inheritantly retarded and or ignorant

i would think those guys at case western would know that 1k hands is meaningless. i mean you have to be pretty smart to get in.

Unfortunately Not everybody knows Doyle brunson, or that the top players win consistently, fortunately, they are doing studies to show there is skill in poker. But why wouldnt they do like lilholdem954 vs a random fool, in like 1.5k tournaments? Anyways, you'd be surprised how many people think poker is a game against the "dealer". And you'd be surprised how many people think, if you Gamble, no matter what form or game you are inevitably going broke.

i agree with your last 2 statements,,, not saying that the rest i dont,,, but u have a point on the last 2 statements.. i always argue with people that arent gamblers/poker players that blackjack and poker is not the same, then i have to explain how in poker you play against humans and not the casino (house) and that the house on gets a small rake on the pots (cash games) and so on,, ya know
