I just figured villain had a decent pp and that my A had him dominated...  Should I have been the aggressor here instead of checking the flop back to him???  Thanks for any input...

Why would i fold pre when the guy has been a maniac the entire time hes been at the table??  Folding pre is a bad play here imo

I would say be the aggressor with the A flopping, maybe the villain folds, maybe not. But with the little info you've given I'd be willing to bet he would have called anyway. Its just product of bad luck. I run into that product daily... sigh...

Agree, but I would have bet the flop, not check-raised.  If he reraises, shove.  If not, then shove the turn.  Outcome might have been the same, but I think this is a better line of play.

I'm folding PF as well... I understand you have a maniac read on him but it is not heads up... this flop ended up going 4 handed

I have to say that when that guy min raises you, alarm bells should be going off unless the guy has shown that he does dumb things like that.

Of course, his raise was idiotic (unless he was trying to make you think that he had AK or AA), then he's a mad genius.  That's what I thought he had.

Anyway, I'd probably fold pre-flop because I wouldn't think that AQ had a chance, but if you somehow knew that he had a small pocket pair and that you were dominating him, then yes you should have raised to avoid giving him a chance to catch up.

Preflop call is kind of iffy, but if he is a maniac who has done this with less than premium hands then its fine (include this info when posting though so we know).

Flop check is fine, we would only fold out hands we beat if we bet, and it gets value from hands like mid to high PPs, low As, etc.

Once he bets that much it is pretty obvious he doesnt have an A, so jamming is fine.

WP, unlucky.

I think you played it fine.  I don't think all the advice here is that great as far as folding to a minraise pre.  You need to call $225 into a pot of over $2k after chief calls.  Yeah, fold getting 10 to 1 on your money.

The only problem is are you willing to go broke to AK on an A-high flop?  Or, are you willing to go broke on a Q high flop to KK?  Or, are you willing to go broke to a set on either an A-high board or a Q-high board?  I'd say a call is fine here.  If the guy is any kind of a maniac, I'd say to jam here pre-flop considering all of the dead money in the middle.

On the flop, you do need to worry about AK and a set, but if you think you have the best of it, you played it well.  If this guy is a complete psycho though, you could just flat call his flop bet and check/call his shove on the turn.  If he's going to check behind though on the turn, I like the check/raise a lot more.

Unfortunately for you, the other preflop callers are going to act after you and if either caught a set, you are basically dead.  A flop lead will give you more information about the strength of their hands, but we our villain may not give us any value if we lead into this pot.  But, that might be ok because the pot is huge already.

I think your play is fine, especially for a $4 tourney.

when I said fold it pre- it was because he did not close the action.  he still had someone to act behind him-someone who already flatted his initial PF raise.

If this was a higher buy in, I think I would take that into consideration.  Someone is clearly capable of flatting an early position raise with a monster and hope to get squeezed or to get max value after the flop.  It's a little risky, but profitable play.

This is a $4 tourney.  The odds of him flat calling then shoving are very low and in fact, I'd say he's calling about 90% of the time.  When he does shove, it's with a hand like A9o or 77 and then you can still call.

I think that if you are going to play AQ and the ace hits, you have to be ready to go to the wall, otherwise why play it? But that being said, 4 handed is not the time to start being cute with check raises. Take the lead and narrow the field. IF the 9s call the flop bet, jam the turn. If he has half a brain, he folds there. but since you checked again, he had to put you on something other than the ace and took the lead hoping to get you to fold. It was just bad luck that he rivered you.
