Been getting lots of questions about what exactly is making a read and playing situational poker. Here's a hand where you can earn some chips with what is still probably the best hand, yet is tough to get it to pay off because it's not comfortable to play as the best hand. My comments on the hand are in bold as the hand progresses.

AawwNutz: raises 300 to 400 Pot has 570 in it at this point. Since I believe that no one has anything worth fighting for, I want to raise to reassert my claim to the best hand. I realize that one of these guys will have a flush draw, so I'm going to let them take a shot at drawing for the flush, then try to get them off the hand on the turn. They are probably 3-1 with their over cards and flush draw, so I raise to 400 giving them a 300 call for a 970 pot

AawwNutz: bets 420 This is an underbet to the potential true drawing odds if he has overs and a flush draw, but after already getting 460 of his chips in the pot before this point, he is essentially going to have to put his tourney on the line for his draw. If he has any other hand, this continued aggression will show him that I can beat any mid-pair. Since I opened, checked, re-raised, and led out, he's got to be giving me some credit.

AawwNutz collected 1270 from pot vn pot for 88 with multi-way action. Since it was early in the tourney, I didn't mind taking a chance with the draws in order to accumulate some chips. Later in the tourney, I would play it faster.

i love the play by play commentary, thats what i am looking for, i always wonder whats goin on in the mind of pro when he is in a hand, now i can see your thought pattern!! just a great post AWWWnutz

Thanks for the analysis Awww... Now a question though. After your 420 bet, say he reraises you all in, do you fold and believe he was slow playing his hand. Or do you call and move on to the next tourney if your read was wrong? He could have been making those calls with a weak J hoping to pair his kicker before you made it to expensive for him. No? You would still be left with 620 chips if you fold there.

Ed,
If he went all-in, I would definitely be surprised based on my read and his very passive play. I would have folded in that scenario, though. He could have a weak J or even nines or a couple of pair. With only 640 left, I would play very fast looking to double up or move on to another tourney.
