A read to talk about

Been getting lots of questions about what exactly is making a read and playing situational poker.  Here's a hand where you can earn some chips with what is still probably the best hand, yet is tough to get it to pay off because it's not comfortable to play as the best hand.  My comments on the hand are in bold as the hand progresses.

PokerStars Game #2324981690: Tournament #10967015, Hold'em No Limit - Level I (10/20) - 2005/08/12 - 22:01:18 (ET)
Table '10967015 49' Seat #4 is the button
Seat 1: razorhand (1680 in chips)
Seat 2: skipeddoda (1600 in chips)
Seat 3: augie98 (1490 in chips)
Seat 4: Dethlefsen (1400 in chips)
Seat 5: ron irwin (1480 in chips) is sitting out
Seat 6: oatster (1500 in chips)
Seat 7: AawwNutz (1500 in chips)
Seat 8: glguwc (1530 in chips)
Seat 9: razortx (1500 in chips)
ron irwin: posts small blind 10
oatster: posts big blind 20
*** HOLE CARDS ***
Dealt to AawwNutz [8h 8d]
AawwNutz: raises 40 to 60  I raised because who wants to play a hand for 20 chips and it helps to clarify opponents' hands
glguwc: folds
razortx: calls 60   flat calls = fishing most times, mid-pairs, AQ, 78s
razorhand: folds
skipeddoda: calls 60
augie98: calls 60
Dethlefsen: calls 60
ron irwin: folds
ron irwin has returned
oatster: calls 40
please note:  I have made the claim to the strongest hand at this point by raising to open.  All the flat calls have indicated average hands.
*** FLOP *** [3h Jc 7c]
oatster: checks
AawwNutz: checks not a bad flop for 8's, but let's get some info, too many people for continuation bet, and out-of-position continuation bets are tough to pull off
razortx: checks
skipeddoda: bets 100  very weak bet - has a very moderate hand not worth protecting against the flush or he has the world's fair
augie98: calls 100  super weak to just call with flush draw on board - flush draw most likely
Dethlefsen: folds
oatster: folds
AawwNutz: raises 300 to 400  Pot has 570 in it at this point.  Since I believe that no one has anything worth fighting for, I want to raise to reassert my claim to the best hand.  I realize that one of these guys will have a flush draw, so I'm going to let them take a shot at drawing for the flush, then try to get them off the hand on the turn.  They are probably 3-1 with their over cards and flush draw, so I raise to 400 giving them a 300 call for a 970 pot
razortx: folds
skipeddoda: folds
augie98: calls 300  This flat call tells us all we need to know.
*** TURN *** [3h Jc 7c] [3d]
AawwNutz: bets 420  This is an underbet to the potential true drawing odds if he has overs and a flush draw, but after already getting 460 of his chips in the pot before this point, he is essentially going to have to put his tourney on the line for his draw.  If he has any other hand, this continued aggression will show him that I can beat any mid-pair.  Since I opened, checked, re-raised, and led out, he's got to be giving me some credit.
augie98: folds
AawwNutz collected 1270 from pot  vn pot for 88 with multi-way action.  Since it was early in the tourney, I didn't mind taking a chance with the draws in order to accumulate some chips.  Later in the tourney, I would play it faster.
*** SUMMARY ***
Total pot 1270 | Rake 0
Board [3h Jc 7c 3d]
Seat 1: razorhand folded before Flop (didn't bet)
Seat 2: skipeddoda folded on the Flop
Seat 3: augie98 folded on the Turn
Seat 4: Dethlefsen (button) folded on the Flop
Seat 5: ron irwin (small blind) folded before Flop
Seat 6: oatster (big blind) folded on the Flop
Seat 7: AawwNutz collected (1270)
Seat 8: glguwc folded before Flop (didn't bet)
Seat 9: razortx folded on the Flop

Bounce it around.

This one is excellent.

I REALLY like the way you analyse hands.

Thanks for the post.  Very interesting and also easy to understand when you explain it in this format.  Looking forward to more.

Thanks for the analysis Awww... Now a question though. After your 420 bet, say he reraises you all in, do you fold and believe he was slow playing his hand. Or do you call and move on to the next tourney if your read was wrong?  He could have been making those calls with a weak J hoping to pair his kicker before you made it to expensive for him. No? You would still be left with 620 chips if you fold there.

Ed,

If he went all-in, I would definitely be surprised based on my read and his very passive play.  I would have folded in that scenario, though.  He could have a weak J or even nines or a couple of pair.  With only 640 left, I would play very fast looking to double up or move on to another tourney.
