I'm playing too tight

I think the problem was reading TJ's book, because after reading it my play has been tighter than ever - and it's killing my game.  The problem now is that I can't seem to loosen my game up at all.  Just to give a few examples (all around a 8 - 10 player table) :

- I'll fold small pairs from the first few seats
- Won't call raises in the middle or late positon unless I have a big pair, or a big ace
- I won't make moves from the button at all because I know I'll get a loose caller or two...and even if I do raise it preflop, if I get even one caller, I think I'm behind in the hand already and mentally give up the pot unless I hit the flop hard, unless I have a monster hand.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do to loosen up my game so I'm not just sitting there folding hand after hand??  Yes, I know patience is good, but not when you're only playing about 15-20% of the hands dealt.  Maybe it's just a mental thing and I need to overcome it...

I practiced playing the situation more than the cards tonight with a low buy-in tourney on UB. 374 entered and with 20 to go I was 3rd in chips when I went against the chip leader in what would be my final hand. I normally would never even consider battling with the leader but he was SO loose in his bets that if I hit anything then I had him. For the first time ever, I was playing for first place before even making the final table rather than playing just to make the final table. I took a chance and I posted my bad beat story in the bad beat section if any of you would give me feedback on how I played it. I want to say here that this thread has helped me realize a lot of what I need to improve in my game, starting with tonight as I practiced changing from a super tight style to a style that fit the situation I was in. Thanks and keep 'em comin!

Murph,

Glad I could help a little.

I should have probably pointed out one little detail to make sure that I don't lead you astray.  You should still be reasonably tight with your calls pre-flop.  You still cannot call a raise with hands like QJ, and you still need to tread lightly with KQ and AQ.  Most of your "loose" play happens from middle position to late position in unopened pots - i.e. from mid position bring it in for a raise with Q10o.

It is only because I know you're a smart-ass that I take your post in good humor.  I don't kiss anyone's ass, but it sounds like you want someone to kiss yours.  You must be the middle child, right? :)

It's all TJ's fault! He is so good his whole book was a bluff-fooling millions into playing the way he wants us to in his book.

It screws us all up-the man is a genius.

This is no bull-the day after I read his Chapter on KK's I go onto Poker Mountain and there is TJ playing one other person in a cash game. I hop on and on the 5th or 6th hand I get kk and he takes me for $200 on the hand.

One thing to think about-when I am playing the MTT's I will win big hands once in awhile, but my real gains come with ok hands after the flop or rasing in postion to accumulate.

Play the player and play the board. tonight I played two MTT's and although not in the money I went down to about 40% remaining players in 1st and about 20% of the remaining players in the second.

I lost all big pocket pairs that were called. In Dise 50K, I lost KK and then lost AA. In PS$109 I lost KK QQ KK QQ AK.

So some nights you will win your big pockets and others you won't-so I went pretty deep tonight without winning one big pocket pair. So what hands was I winning?
