401K vs Pension Plans You need to provide a lot more information before anyone can help you. Do you work for a public or private company' There are many public pension systems that are very likely to fail over the next decade or so, due to the fact that the government makes the laws, so they can decide what a reasonable interest return assumption is in the valuation, and then, if they don't like what the actuaries say needs to be contributed, they can you know, just not contribute (again, since they make the laws). If a public pension fails, the most likely change for a benefit holder would be a decrease in ... Posted in: Off Topic |

2nd federal Judge finds Obamacare unconstitutional The fact that there is a >40% gap in poll numbers between people who reject the individual mandate and people who support denying coverage based on preexisting conditions tells me that most people in this county are way too stupid to rationally debate anything regarding health care. Anyone here take Paxil??? In regards to the OP, I was on Paxil for a few months a couple of years ago and had quite a few of the side effects. Sex drive gone along with just about all sensitivity in the area. A couple of times when I forgot to take a pill I had the most insane, vivid dreams, and to this day I find my dreams to be more intense than before Paxil. Also, one day I had the brain/ear "whooshing", which was scary as hell. I'm sure there's more that I'm forgetting right now. But I'm going to second what some others have said. I was in a realllly bad place in 06--I left college after 2 failing semesters where ... Posted in: Off Topic |

would you buy a car that drives itself? While admittedly this is a crude estimate, if the rate is 30,000/300 million per year and is constant over the course of your life, from birth over the next 80 years you would have a 1-[1-30,000/300,000,000]^80=~.00797 or .797% chance of dying from a car accident in your life, or in other words about 1 in 125. To me, that's scarily high, and I would welcome anything that would improve those chances. Posted in: Off Topic |

Top Chef / Vegetarians..... I have been a vegetarian my entire life and also spent a good deal of time in food service. On many occasions I have been relayed the message that I had made the best steak, chicken, burger, etc. that the person has ever had yet I have no idea what one tastes like. Obviously the meals I cooked are not Top Chef quality, but I have no doubt a well-trained vegetarian chef could compete with everyone else. Posted in: Off Topic |

Drive Thru Tyranny: New York National Guard Scans Vehicles For Guns Considering that there is no indication that they have ever done one of the x-ray scans with a person inside and the report specifically states that the x-ray scans are done only with warrants, the questions you are asking have about as much worth as you. Re:Seat belt laws. Somebody failed conditional probability. According to this: seat belt use is at about 83%. So 5x as many people wear seat belts than those that do not. Yet more of the total traffic fatalities occur among people who don't use seat belts. I'm pressed for time so won't calculate any more, but you have to be blind to not see your probability of dying is greatly increased if you're not wearing a seat belt. Choosing not to wear a seat belt is one of the most selfish thing someone can do. Posted in: Off Topic |

Re:Video of Iraqi slayings released I don't think anyone can complain about the initial engagement. Under the circumstances it was a legitimate engagement. However, the fact that people are defending opening fire on the van is morally reprehensible. Judging solely from what we can see--A van pulls up to the scene of a slaughter and sees a very injured, unarmed man struggling to prop himself up. The van stops, and 2 unarmed men rush to the aid of the injured man. Despite what the soldiers say in the video, there is absolutely no indication that anyone from the van has any desire to collect abandoned weaponry. All the ... Posted in: Off Topic |

Re:computer help please! That should work fine. Also something handy to have on hand would be something like this: Hard drive problems are pretty common, and having that on hand makes it easy to turn any former internal hard drive into an external drive for copying important files onto another computer/hard drive. Given that I'm generally the person a lot of my friends and family go to for computer problems, I have gotten a good bit of use out of it. Posted in: Off Topic |

Re:Texas Board of Education disses Thomas Jefferson From my perspective, there are a few major interconnected problems with the public education system in America today. Way too many parents simply don't do any significant level of educating their children outside of school when they are young. While a minority of these parents have valid excuses (i.e. a single parent working 2 jobs to stay afloat without much free time as it is), in my experience most of these parents just don't give a shit about education. As a result, the kids of these parents are way behind their peers when they start attending school. Add that to the fact that ... Posted in: Off Topic |

Re:The Taxes of Health Care Reform So, I don't suppose you have an actual source besides an email forward, huh' Cause I haven't seen anything anywhere that would suggest a family of 4 making $54K a year would essentially be taxed an additional 11.4% Also, every recent version of the bill pretty much grandfathers in any current health insurance you might have, which shows that "the way you understand it" isn't really close to reality anyway. Re:NRA Safety Instructor Fail UD makes perfect sense and people are just distorting, refusing to read, or incapable of understanding simple logic. Summary of UD's points: 1. You can buy a gun for the purpose of safety and not own the gun safely (I don't see why that part was so hard to grasp for so many.) 2. Most people who purchase guns do so to have a greater degree of control in the situation when conflict arises. They do not consider whether or not data actually shows whether or not they are safer. 3. Many people from number 2 then claim they own the gun to be safer in their homes. Because of the ... Re:Something positive about religition/Christianity That sounds like a great idea for the church, and I applaud all members of the congregation who participate. My biggest gripe with Christianity, and indeed, many religions, is that it doesn't matter how often you do charity work or how many people you influence positively with your actions. At the end of the day, if you don't believe in their deity, you will suffer an eternity of torment. Most interpretations of the Bible say that solely believing that Jesus was the son of God and that you can only be saved through him will get you into heaven, and I can't possibly understand how ... Re:Over One Million Iraqi Deaths Caused by US Occupation Nowhere in the link in the OP does it claim that there were 1 million civilian deaths. It quite clearly says 1 million Iraqis have suffered a violent death since the start of US military action in Iraq. Yeah, a very large portion of those are citizens who resisted militarily. I'm sure many of those were just people who felt they were defending their home, and many were people who wanted the status quo to continue due to their own selfish motives. However, they all count in this study, so make of it what you will. Posted in: Off Topic |
