Re:JohnnyGstacks owns me.... is your goal to win the tournament or to maximize your $ev' your goal leads to very different approaches in the late stages. do the ICM math. i'd bet money that a fold is correct depending on johnny's calling range if you're trying to maximize $ev. people attach way too much meaning to the 'win' IMHO... poker's about maximizing $ev, no' Posted in: Poker Discussion |

Re:Is Poker -EV in the long run for most people? maybe i see things differently because... it's taken a lot of work and dedication to get where i am... i am lazy in general, but i am the opposite of lazy in regards to poker. i study hard, i don't mind long sessions when i put them in, i play with intense focus. just cuz i do it in pajamas and only play when i feel like it... i mean, it's -ev to play when you're not up to it... and i think my kids would appreciate the fact that i'm good enough at what i do, that i can just take an afternoon off to go watch my son's little league game or my daughter's recital... ... Re:Is Poker -EV in the long run for most people? my priorities don't include doing 'noble' work, tbh... i want to be happy... and to be happy, i need: -certain level of living -freedom to pursue what i'm passionate about. i'd be proud to live in a house that poker built. just as proud, as say i was a tennis pro (i used to be a coaching pro) and built a house with that money. the model of 'success' that this society impresses upon us since childhood, in my opinion, is outdated.... house in suburbia, 2 kids, white picket fence, good stable job, trophy wife... that's so 20th century isn't it' to say ... Re:What is the LOWEST salary you would accept to be a professional poker player? without a pretty big real-life roll, it's tough to go pro on your own. until you do have that $$ in the bank... backing is the way to go, IMO. u give up ev obviously but... you don't have downswings. you have breakeven streaks at worst. even still: you probably don't want to rely on poker for money til you die... so you gotta earn enough now, that you can invest/start a business... so an honest answer is, i'd need to earn at least 20-30k more per year than what i need to live comfortably.... 2-3k/mo covers my expenses including insurance and herbals, so... 50-60k mininmum, ... Re:1k hand i call turn wanting more value on the river. if i repop his c/r on turn i'm announcing i have a set 100%... allows villain to play perfectly vs my range.... bad. if he checks river i obv bet since he bet sizeable amount on river, that's plenty value for the strength of my hand vs his range; considering, any bet on the river is EXTRA value i'm getting relative to taking the pot away on the turn. if i reraise on the river, it allows him to play perfectly vs my range (once again), which includes rebluff shoving just often enough that i have to call every time; and vs his reshoving ... Re:An open debate/discussion on multiaccounting (solution coming soon) wow...i just read this whole thread. couple things. Adam hit the nail on the head a few posts back. and the guy with the rafflle analogy had the best analogy. the ethics... jeeeesus... when a player signs up to play at a poker site, he agrees to the terms and conditions. a new player joins, and expects that everyone's playing by the same rules. 'one entry per person per tournament' being one of those rules. when a top player multiaccounts, he does so because he believes it adds ev (why else'). where does that extra ev come from' it comes from the players who don't ... Re:1k hand i put him on 2pr or better. villain just bet 2100; it's 25/50 with 15k stacks. if i raise river, what hand i beat will call me' against his range, bottom set is middling IMO. so i just called; he flipped over AA88. after just calling, i made a comment about 'i'm such a nit' (which is ok, because i'm far from one)... and villain said, 'i wouldn't have put another chip in the pot' ... not 100% sure he folds to a min raise... but balancing the frequency he calls with a worse hand, with the frequency he reraises with a better hand... i think it's barely +ev to ...
