Baseball Discussion May 14-20
Too lazy to check it, but was listening to discussion somewhere (don't even remember) that Brett Lawrie has one of the best defensive ratings in baseball. But this was aided by the fact that the Jays employ a huge shift to left handed pull hitters where Lawrie (3B) goes to shallow RF rather than a simple shift of the 2B/SS/3B so that Lawrie doesn't have to turn double plays. The point being that he's fielded a few ground balls in shallow right field and the defensive metrics pick this up as him having insane range from 3B. He's a much better defender than many thought he would be at this ...

+1 Did we forget that Mir was getting tooled on his feet before Nog foolishly went for the choke rather than just pounding him out and taking the TKO victory' Mir's hands are SLOW and he gets rocked by everyone. JDS is throwing bombs with huge power, better technique, and more speed than anyone Frank has ever seen. And this isn't to take away from Mir, the guy is a legend of the sport and obviously super talented on the ground, but how is he going to get it there' His wrestling is terrible, he has no takedowns, he certainly won't be able to shoot and take down a more athletic JDS, and I ...

Baseball Discussion May 7 - May 13
I know Reagins is no longer there, and the comment was more sarcastic than serious but I'd be surprised if there wasn't atleast some industry wide hesitation in dealing with Anthopolous given his track record so far in trades. His only notable slip up was flipping Napoli right away for Frank Francisco. As far as the Angels, I think it's just compounding the error by dealing Bourjos unless they find an equal talent to play 3rd for them, but then you are still struggling to find ways to get Trumbo's bat into the lineup. I mean, I know they won't do it. But really, just sit Wells down, and go ...

Baseball Discussion May 7 - May 13
Especially when Bautista is terrible in right defensively and probably long term will be making the switch to 1st. In fact, given Adam Lind is absolutely horrific, I wouldn't be shocked about something like that going down, depending on how "willing" Bautista is too put the team ahead. You slide Rasmus over to RF, Bourjos in CF, Thames in LF (hopefully Snider makes it back eventually given his much higher overall ceiling). Encarnacion stays at DH, Lind is just gone, far away and Bautista becomes the slugging 1B the Blue Jays are missing. I just fixed the team. Except since we're linked to ...

Baseball Discussion April 30 - May 6
97 pitches tonight for the CG SHO for Henderson Alvarez, just need the Orioles to reel off a 10 game losing streak and the Jays will be in business, tough to win 4 in a row from Texas and Anaheim and not really pick up any ground. 16-11 is nice though (12-3 vs non AL East opponents, 15-6 against everyone but Baltimore)

Baseball Discussion April 30 - May 6
The last two starts have been amazing for him. He had atleast 1 walk in his first 75 MLB starts, but this is two starts in a row without one now (15 IP, 0 ER, 17 Ks, 0 BBs). Earlier in the season, he was visibly pitching to contact more which was an obvious attempt to pitch deeper into games and keep his pitch count down. The problem was (and his game log doesn't necessarily show it), he was getting hit hard and having some fortunate breaks. However, these last two games, he's blended his nasty stuff with the pitch to contact, and he's been untouchable. As a Jays fan, it's really exciting, ...

Baseball Discussion April 16-22
The Jays have one of the best and deepest lineups in all of baseball. If Bautista ever gets his timing back, watch out. The key to this season will be the starting pitching. Romero will regress after last season, but not drastically, he's still a front end of the rotation starter. A quality, consistent season from Brandon Morrow will be huge (remains to be seen whether he's capable of providing this). Then, Alvarez is still a raw project living off his power sinker, but seems capable of sticking in the show. Drabek has given optimism his past battles are behind him. Last start, he grinded ...

UFC 145 Jones Vs. Evans
They will never fight each other. Rory will take his time, crush people over the next couple of years, wait for Georges to take out Condit and Diaz (the last two interesting fights for him at 170), and then he'll move up to 185 and let Rory take the strap at 170. I can almost guarentee they have an agreement in place that they will never fight, and unlike Evans/Jones, I think they will honour it. GSP has been a mentor to Rory Mac, and just from the answers Rory gives, doesn't seem to have any desire to pursue the belt while Georges has it. And with Georges working Rory's corner tonight, and ...

Baseball Discussion - April 9-15
The PCL and Las Vegas in particular is a hitters league. Pitches don't break, it's hard to get an indication of how good a pitcher is in that environment. Therefore, leave all the prized possessions in New Hampshire where they can get true indications of their progress, and leave all the burnt out failed pitchers in Las Vegas. I also think this is why they sent Drabek to AAA and not AA. They knew he'd get hit there, and they wanted him to focus on his mental makeup with runners on base and being able to grind through tough situations.

5-8 April Weekly Baseball discussion.
It wasn't a typical 0-7, he had several good at bats and smashed a few balls right at defenders. He could have easily had 2 or 3 hits today. He also played great in center field and made an outstanding diving catch in deep center to save extra bases. Also, game 1 of 162, relax.

I think the standards have to be set that high on purpose, because these contracts usually fail miserably and impede progress in a major way. With Votto, it's more his age rather than his talent, if he were 25 or 26, I'd probably be fine giving him the deal, I don't know how much longer he can sustain his current production. If he starts dropping off at 31-32, I think the deal is going to be really bad. I guess one unaddressed point that may have an impact. If all the Jays highly touted prospects were up, and showing great promise like Lawrie has, and the pitching was set with Alvarez ...

Personally, I would be doing it for a 24-26 year old playing a premium position and already having significant MLB success with an elite pedigree (essentially, not many players). I just don't think the value is there for Votto, that contract is going to run til he's 40 years old. It's a given that he absolutely will not be worth the 22.5 million per year at that time. The problem I believe is that I don't think he's going to generate enough surplus value over the next few years where the contract is still passable when he does get old. I just think it's a mistake and it tanks your franchise. ...

Adam Lind is terrible. You would get nothing close to a #2 or #3 starter for him. He has no value at all, he can't hit left handed pitching. You would literally be lucky to get a decent minor league player for Lind. If you wanted a legitimate #2 or #3 starter, you'd start hearing Gose, Marisnick, McGuire, Jenkins, Nicolino, Syndergaard, etc. Adam Lind, a below average, injury prone, aging, average defensively 1st baseman is in demand by noone, you'd need to trade some of the prospects to get quality MLB pieces, not your bums. And the Votto to Toronto idea was more of just a pipe dream that ...

NHL Discussion Thread March 2012
As a Leafs fan, Tobias Enstrom is a really good offensive defenceman and is most definitely a top 2 D in the league. He's very undersized, but an extremely good skater with smooth hands, puck handling D of his caliber are a rare and valuable commodity, also surprisingly durable for his size (recent injuries more fluke than the norm). On the other hand, Buff is a complete liability and any mention of him near a Norris Trophy is a joke (this year or last). He's a game changer I suppose, in that he'll blow as many wins as he'll create. A defenceman, he is not. Saying you'd turn down Phil Kessel ...
