Re:Healthcare Debacle I thought that the SC had established that the welfare clause gave the govt the power to tax/spend only to pursue otherwise constitutional ends' I can't remember the name of the case and I'm too lazy to look it up right now. Could an argument also be made that this bill commandeers state resources and is therefore unconstitutional under Printz' Disclaimer: I'm talking out of my ass and could be very wrong here since I have one semester of law school under my belt and haven't really had time to read up on the senate bill. Re:Causes of the civil war. You're wrong. Listen to Lord Supremo, he is owning this issue. Every other reason for the civil war is directly related to slavery. The slavery debate dominated American politics from the revolution on. The word "slave" isn't even mentioned in the constitution until the 13th amendment because the founder's knew they couldn't touch the issue and still get enough people to agree with it. Also, someone asked why the Emancipation Proclamation didn't free all slaves. The E.P. was essentially a public relations gimmick. Given that the states in which it freed slaves ... Re:HUGE NEWS on Global Warming, Hadley CRU hacked A) You didn't attack his bias, but that of the article. B) Even if he is close minded, dismissing things based on the source shows that you are too. It's not ok for either of you. C) This is incredibly interesting material which may indicate the disclosure of the biggest scandal in our lifetimes, certainly in mine. It further calls into question a field of science that has long had question marks around it. If nothing else you should read it and consider the implications of these emails. Just read the emails and not the commentary. That should shield you from their bias. Posted in: Off Topic |

Re:HUGE NEWS on Global Warming, Hadley CRU hacked Because it was easier than having to argue with someone as close-minded as yourself. Please learn that while the source should be considered when reading, even the most biased opinion will have some sort of substance to it (unless it is completely fabricated, which doesn't appear to be the case here). I guess I should rephrase my earlier point. It is sometimes ok to question the source, but to dismiss something out of hand because the source disagrees with your politics or has a sarcastic bio is ridiculous and takes away from your credibility. Re:How bad do alcohol related misdemeanors look to employers? Lying here is the worst thing you can do. Many employers will do background checks following the interview. And while most times a few misdeanors won't hurt you unless they are job related, being caught lying means you are immediately DQ'd from being hired, possibly ever at that company. Re:I feel for this family, I really do, but c'mon (lawsuit related) I don't personally think that this type of decision is correct but the last paragraph in the article is pretty key here. The company had previously lost the same type of case and had still not put some sort of warning on thier product...In 2002, SEVEN years ago. Even though that case was in a different state, it still shows that the company knew there was a danger that the public may not have known about and did nothing to change that. Posted in: Off Topic |

Re:Job Hunters Unite. Let's have a Resume building workshop. I'll begin. ^^^^^Agreed. Used to work as a recruiter and nothing irritated me more than an objective line. We know what your objective is if we have your resume. You want a job. Saying it on the resume, and dressing it up, is really just a waste of space and time. Posted in: Off Topic |

Re:Job Hunters Unite. Let's have a Resume building workshop. I'll begin. For your internship, which I assume is in the field in which you are applying, you don't say anything about what you actually did. It sounds great that you worked with th regional manager but it doesn't really mean anything. You might have been the one getting his coffe all day for all we know. Try to be more descriptive about projects you worked on etc. Posted in: Off Topic |

Re:House passed Healthcare Reform Using what logic does improving care control costs' Better care means more costs usually. Even if I accept your logic, you have no data that backs up the claim that long term costs will go down because of this bill, that is mere speculation. The only analysis I've seen says that costs will go up over the next ten years or so. If you have other, please post it, I'd love to see it. Posted in: Off Topic |

Re:House passed Healthcare Reform Your point is great, it will improve the quantity of care provided. Sounds great. I'm sure everyone will feel really good about themselves when they pay taxes. But it won't control costs at all, and will in fact cause them to increase. The entire pont of the bill was to control costs. It says that ON the bill! From the first page of the bill: "To provide affordable, quality health care for all Americans and reduce the growth in health care spending, and for other purposes." So you admit that this bill fails in one of it's primary purposes, yet you are happy it passed' ... Posted in: Off Topic |

Re:FFB Ethics-A little loooong This. There are other factors involved in a trade than just point differential. Maybe Team A needed a running back and has depth at QB. Even if there is a big point differential, this trade could still benefit both teams. Add that to the fact that the league vote is split (if I'm right in thinking that the two teams engaged in the trade are not in the vote, then it's 5-5) and you should let this trade go through. Re:White House Excludes Fox News from Press Room-at least attempted So we agree that the treasury made the list. And we agree that it was based on a question. So we agree that there was no formal request like you said earlier in this thread. I don't know whether the treasury department (and by implication the entire administration) intentionally excluded Fox here any more than you do. But you have to admit the possibility. Given the adminstration rhetoric towards Fox recently, you have to admit that at best it looks really bad. Also the fact that the other networks stood up for Fox tells us certain things. I think we can assume that they would not ... Posted in: Off Topic |

Re:White House Excludes Fox News from Press Room-at least attempted I don't undrstand how you can still defend this move, or even say it is a case of he said/she said. From the story you quoted: "Feinberg did a pen and pad with reporters to brief them on cutting executive compensation. TV correspondents, as they do with everything, asked to get the comments on camera. Treasury officials agreed and made a list of the networks who asked (Fox was not among them)." This does not indicate that Fox "had to ask" for the interview. The treasury made a list, based on who asked a certain question. Pretty easy thing to misunderstand (or twist ... Re:Underdog34 vs. Littleze In theory, social concerns, etc are addressed. If a company does something that its consumers find objectionable, demand for its products will drop. I'm pretty rusty on the the whole issue of social effects on econ and externalities so I'll let someone else go further into it if they want. But really the issue from a political perspective is whether this form of punishment goes far enough. I suspect that for you it does not. A question I think is interesting on the topic of globalization has to do with the short term versus long term effects. You address it indirectly when speaking ... Posted in: Off Topic |

Re:Obama's staff out of control Do you really not believe that there is difference between a news organization and a political opponent' I guess if you do this stance makes sense. Having media that reports and paints issues from different angles is essential to an honest political discourse IMO. That is the biggest issue I have with anyone who discredits a story strictly based on its source. It's even worse when the government attempts to discredit a news organization rather than merely disagreeing with some arguments that it's employees might make. When the government does it, they are not only blinding themselves ... Posted in: Off Topic |

Re:GG USA-Hillary agrees to let Russia inspect all our nuclear sites This isnt a very clear article, but I don't think it means that it has already been agreed to. Pretty sure that if the Russians don't agreed to do the same, this won't happen. That said, it would be completely unacceptable to allow any other country to inspect our military facilities, particularly one that has shown as many leaks as Russia. There is also their renewed stance of aggression recently. Posted in: Off Topic |

Re:Question about american healthcare. A few things wrong with this idea. First, I'm fairly sure that there is no mechanism to do this at the federal level. The only two real options would be to amend the constitution to allow for national referendum or hold a national constitutional convention to add a healthcare amendment. There will not be a national constitutional convention anytime soon becuse it essentially opens the whole thing up to change. The last time this happened was 1787 and the entire system of government was changed. And there will be no attempt to allow national referendum in any other way. From a practical ... Re:Wow. Conservative columnist David Brooks nails it... I didn't read the links and don't know much about the issue, but the manner in which you try to argue this point is awful. First, you discredit a source based on it's headline. If that wasn't your intention, I apologize, but that's the way I read it and the post doesn't really do anything to help your argument otherwise. Re:town hall protests organized by corporate interests? Well, if that really is your point, you are probably right, seeing as how a spontaneous organized protest seems like a contradiction. However, a grassroots organization is defined as being driven by the politics of a community. In this case, it seems as if the healthcare community is driving the protests that are against this bill. I would argue that it is a grassroots (a term I don't really like) organization and that it is perfectly legitmate (maybe rude) for them to protest in this manner. I don't see any proof that Democrats stocking these meetings with their supporters is a ... Posted in: Off Topic |

Re:town hall protests organized by corporate interests? What difference does it make who is organizing the protests' The healthcare industry is obviously against this bill. Why can't they voice their objections' And why can't others who are against the bill cooperate with them' Second point, there is a real difference between the DNC and the White House collecting that information. Namely that the White House is breaking laws meant to protect the people from the government, and apparently suffering no consequences. Sets a nice precedent doesn't it' Posted in: Off Topic |

Re:People still think the Bush administration didn't lie? I think that it is accepted that Bush overstated intelligence info. I think that you need to accept that nothing will be done about it. Every administration lies, and if one goes after the previous legally, then they potentially open themselves up in the future. Re:Right wing domestic terrorism First, the people commiting these crimes were obviously insane already. Blaming talking heads of any variety for one of their listeners actions is stupid on many levels. Second, defining these acts as terrorism is really stretching the definition. By definition, the intent behind terrorism is to incite terror. While you could argue that any crime can incite terror, it seems as though the acts themselves were the motivation in all the cases you mentioned. Third, this goes to show that Obama is the most divisive president we've had in quite a while. Posted in: Off Topic |
