US players who file taxes your help is appreciated
My main point is a lot of players are reporting their entry fees for the year as gross losses and their amounts won for the year as gross winnings. What I am saying is if you enter a 1K tournament online and win 3K, the 1K entry fee is not part of your "winnings", but rather an investment that you made that was returned (like a cash game player putting 1K on the table). So for that "session", you have 2K of net winnings, not 1K of losses and 3K of winnings. This can have an impact on your tax return, as a lot of deductions are impacted by your gross income. But I see your point. That was ...

Something my accountant stumbled across that may help a lot of you.......
Apparently the most used method of reporting online tournament poker earnings, and what I thought was the case, is to file your gross winnings for the year vs. gross losses for the year. So if you had 100K of tournament entries for the year and won 150K, you would report 150K of gross income and 100K of losses and pay taxes on the 50K (not considering any deductions if you are a pro). There has apparently been some accountants who have figured out a better way of reporting for tournament players that complies with the tax code. Basically, you can report as session wins and losses, much like ...

Merge Network (can) zero out account if dormant for 5 years per TOS #17
Yeah, looks like they can do this. Damn, they get to earn interest on your money for six months, then just take it. I guess it is just too difficult to mail a check to address on file.

Matt Affleck - Give the man credit
I just meant that Duhammel didn't seem to have a fold button the way the hand was played, it is possible the bad beat was coming no matter how Affleck played it.

Matt Affleck - Give the man credit
Watching Duhamel play that hand, I'm pretty much sure the chips were going in no matter how Affleck played the hand, even if he jams pre, Duhamel probably goes to the "must be AK" standby.

being "stuck" mentally as a poker player
Tom, Try being satisfied with playing well. The next time you hit a good run of success, just rinse and repeat for a while rather than trying to figure out a new and better way to play. I can tell you that when you are not playing well, you are either too loose, too fancy or too both. Oh, and don't worry about being top 10, worry about making money. Although I still expect to see your name there at some point. Good luck boss.

Was gonna say, much respect for hanging in and taking your medicine. That definitely moves you up a notch in my book....now you're at notch one. Out of curiosity, how long have you been playing PLO' Also, with that draw heavy board (at least in your mind), you have to bet that turn....(cue the debate on how to play PLO with rules that allow you to play one card, lol).

Why do people in live games call time on themselves?
It is an advanced slowrolling technique. You can't imagine the look you get when you call the floor on yourself and run the clock down to one second, only to roll over the joint.

Poker etiquette
This is not what the conversation is about. If you call a bet, you have the right to wait until the other player turns their cards up. If you pass on that, then so be it. The conversation is in regards to players who called bets, but are not required to show. I do stand corrected, my earlier post had a portion that is not technically part of Robert's rule, but was included as an interpretation. I just put it in to clarify how most view the rule. I have rarely had an issue in live play, and I don't mind showing my hand if asked, but if it happened over and over again, I would call the floor ...

Poker etiquette
Roberts Rules of Poker. Section 3 - The Showdown 5. Any player who has been dealt in may request to see any hand that has been called, even if the opponent's hand or the winning hand has been mucked. However, this is a privilege that may be revoked if abused. If a player other than the pot winner asks to see a hand that has been folded, that hand is dead. If the winning player asks to see a losing player’s hand, both hands are live, and the best hand wins. In most casinos, you may request to see any hand that was eligible to win the pot at showdown. Only players who were dealt in (received ...

Poker Bankroll Loan plz advise
Well, even if this is a level, I'll bite. If you take out a 20K loan strictly for a bankroll, you are going to pay 1400 a year in interest, or 7% of your ROI (if you can get that). That is a lot of rake to add to your playing. If you do decide to do something like this, you would be much better off opening a line of credit and drawing off only what you need to play. Lines of credit are usually converted to long term loans after two years if they are not paid off, so you will only end up owing what you used if you are not a winning player. If you averaged a balance of 5K throughout the year, ...
