I've been a Pirates fan all my life. My first favorite player was Willie Stargell. I think it's selfish to keep bringing up our piece-of-shit team in a thread to discuss the entirety of Major League Baseball. I just thought Sveum's quote about the scuds was funny.

Baseball Discussion May 21-27
I suppose if a Cubs fan gets too drunk at a game this year, he or she can just tell anybody who gives them trouble that they were trying to forget about the team's struggles. They can't even beat Pittsburgh, where the offense is inept at historic levels. (Only one team in the history of baseball ever struck out three times more than they walked. The Pirates currently strike out four times for every walk.) And then, to lose by hitting a batter. Dale Sveum's quote after the game about Dolis was funny: "He's throwing scuds and stuff all over the place."

Also, know a story about the famous play depicted in that bobble head. Rich Donnelly, who was the Pittsburgh third-base coach that year and is from the same town in Ohio as me, told the story, many years ago. Bonds was playing too deep in left field. Van Slyke, in center, hollered at him and waved, told him to move in. Bonds waived him off, and did not move in. It's a painful story for Pirates fans because if Bonds had only listened to Van Slyke, he likely throws out Bream at the plate. That remains the worst I ever felt after my team lost a game.

The difference between golf and other sports for fan noise is that in golf, the norm is silence and in other sports, the norm is a wall of noise. If golf fans were loud all the time, it would not bother the golfers one bit. Conversely, if Yankees Stadium all of a sudden fell silent right before a pitch, it would distract the players.

I think NBC was very relieved when he fell out of contention and they did not have to show him live anymore. Although, he did a much better job of controlling it Sunday, especially on the back nine. Playing with Kuchar maybe calmed him down a little bit.

Golf Swing Tips
Cash, check out this recent golf thread: / Your swing is a lot like Wandigo's: feet too far apart, short, quick backswing. Do the drill that Zeedustin prescribed. It will help. Bring your feet closer together to shoulder width and stand up taller. Try to cut down on your lateral movement. You don't need a big sway back and forth to create power. It makes you move your head, which causes you to lose focus on the ball. You have to let your eyes hang still so you can see the ball. It cannot be a moving target. Stay centered over the ball. Don't move your head. Keep your head down. Make solid ...

Baseball Discussion April 23-29
Hate to clutter up an MLB discussion thread with more Pirate talk, but here goes: - Saw something happen tonight I NEVER saw before: A baserunner get yanked from the game immediately after a near pickoff. Garrett Jones for the Pirates was on second, first and second with no outs, Pirates were trying to bunt, first pitch was a ball. Catcher throws to second, Jones is barely safe. He easily coulda been called out. Immediately, Hurdle sends out McLouth to pinch run. Never saw that before. - A Pittsburgh fan told me the Pirates should have broken the bank to get Yu Darvish. That way, ...

Rip Levon Helm
Yeah Levon played for eight hours the night The Last Waltz was filmed. His hands were bleeding by the end of the show. And the thing was, he did not want The Band to quit. It was Robby Robertson and Martin Scorcese's idea for the movie and he had to go along with it. Another story I like about Levon is way back when The Band was on tour backing up Ronnie Hawkins that they had two big Cadillacs to drive to their shows, and Levon always drove one of them.

Golf swing help please
IBGrindin, you look strong and athletic and create good clubhead speed. You just need to get your swing in the correct path. Next time you go to the range, try to hit balls while holding a towel in your left armpit. This will force you to take the club back inside and not let your arms get so far away from your body. You need to swing inside-out, not outside-in. Also, watch your video again and keep an eye on the top of your head in relation to the tree behind you. See how your head comes up during the swing' At address, bend a little more at the knees and stand your back up straighter. As ...

Golf swing help please
This is not a complete disaster. To be able to hit the ball with your short backswing, it means you have good hand-eye coordination, It means you already know how to pop the ball, accelerate through it. Also, you're not making the mistake of hitting from the top like a lot of guys do, because your swing has no top. I really like Zeedustin's drill and believe it will work. I think if you find a way to get yourself to make a full swing, you can play some decent golf because of the attributes you already have in place.

***Official 2012 Masters Tournament Thread***
In terms of the golf, and not the crying, anyone who watched the Masters and enjoys playing the game should think about what Oosthuizen did, and not Watson. Nobody in the world can play like Watson. There is basically nothing to be learned from his game. All you can do is watch and be amazed. But Oosthuizen' Tiger could take a clue. Stay calm. Make a simple, little swing. Stay on plane throughout the swing. Hit your putts with a simple, little stroke and hit them solid. Play smart golf.
