LV Trip Report & Why You Need to Make the FT I just returned from a mini-vacation in LV after meeting up with Cal, Adam, BodogAri, and Tranquil Chaos. Ari instantly grasped craps in terms of pre-flop play and called for numbers that he did not want to hit in the same reverse-jinx of tournament play. I learned that, unlike poker, hitting the stick man in the chest with a chip does not draw a ten minute penalty. Tranquil Chaos got locked in an icy stare-down with Phil Ivey, but nobody was injured. Cal and Adam, who were wearing Pocket Fives headgear, smiled pleasantly when they were greeted by inebriated fans as “the guys from poker ... Posted in: Poker Discussion |

Re(1): 5th Street Venture Capital We had more than 200 applicants last year. We made eight offers and received five acceptances. Since then, we added three additional players. The players have agreed to keep the details of our arrangement between them and us, but we did part ways with one of the original backed players who may (or may not) want to discuss his experience. For our part, the experience with our players has been excellent. Posted in: Poker Discussion |

Re(2): Financial Suicide (or, The Problem of Multiple Ganks) Wareagle: thank you MKGB: that's sort of what I meant by adverse selection; among the only people who remain to compete are those with sufficient financial resources to adapt to the new environment. Fishlanier:Gank owns asking the right question, even if rhetorically. Posted in: Poker Discussion |

Financial Suicide (or, The Problem of Multiple Ganks) Much has been written about a single player competing in the same online tournament under multiple accounts, and this post is intended to approach the topic from a somewhat different perspective without repeating the same tired arguments. Suppose we start with the question “what prevents a player from doing this'” I’ll imperfectly summarize three common responses below: A person’s ethical compass or notions of fairness, independent of any stated rules; The tournament administrator’s stated rules, and a person’s willingness to follow them and/or the administrator’s willingness to enforce ... $1k STT (possible game theory?) Question Player A and Player B have a standing arrangement to swap 25% of each other, which applies here. Although they sometimes discuss strategy and specific hands, they do not share information during a game. Full table, generally tough players, early on with no significant stack disparity. Player A raises 3 x BB from early position, and it folds around to Player B on the cut-off with JJ. Player B knows that Player A could be raising with a wide range of hands for a wide range of reasons at this stage. Top 3 positions pay. What should Player B do, and does the 25% swapping arrangement influence ... Posted in: Poker Discussion |

Re(3): Player Backing Fund Update Apologies for any inconvenience--these are the first two instances of a problem accessing the site that I know of, so please send me a PM with your e-mail and I will reply. Also, any information you have about error messages/date & time of the problem would be helpful so that I can take a look through the server logs and see what's going on. Thanks. Re(10): PocketFives Partners in a Player Backing Fund Bustarimes: A number of very strong competitors have expressed interest in our new venture. I have no doubt that DoubleLucky has outstanding results, but I choose not to carry on a public dialogue with him about his poker qualifications, deal structure, or his opinions on any other topic. I can also assure you that we have never requested or received any non-public information about a player, and we would not be interested in such information until we made an offer to invest. If any person does not feel comfortable sharing their name, mailing address, and phone number along with publicly ... Posted in: Poker Discussion |

Re(4): PocketFives Partners in a Player Backing Fund I can't say I've ever stepped into a public negotiation, even after inviting somebody to speak privately, and I think I'll have to decline this opportunity as well. Good luck. Posted in: Poker Discussion |

Re(2): PocketFives Partners in a Player Backing Fund Or we could talk a bit, DoubleLucky, maybe get to know each other. I'm available via PM, through our website, or I'm happy to contact you if you prefer. I'm not sure what the difference is between an offer in your second sentence and an "offer" in your third sentence, but I'm willing to talk about it. Posted in: Poker Discussion |

Re(3): PocketFives Partners in a Player Backing Fund Adam summed it up nicely--tournament backing is our focus, and we could not find a way around the 13th Amendment (which makes ownership truly difficult). Also, we have been inundated with requests from many outstanding and some less accomplished players, so disregard the screen that automatically pops up and says we will try to respond within 48 hours. Please give us a few days before sending a reminder. Thanks. Posted in: Poker Discussion |

Re(2): PocketFives Partners in a Player Backing Fund "Backing" means we are investing entry fees in a player in exchange for a percentage of the player's winnings (if any), and the percentage will vary depending on the relative strength of the player, the financial risk we are assuming, etc. Sorry to say it depends, but there is no universal answer at the moment. Our first group of backed players will be competing for a few weeks to a few months so that we have an adequate opportunity to evaluate them, and we intend to back the top performers from that group in live events beginning in 2006. In general, we are interested in backing players in ... Posted in: Poker Discussion |

Re(1): PocketFives Partners in a Player Backing Fund Hi all, We appreciate the assistance from Pocket Fives and kind words from Fox. I'll try to respond to some of the posts in one shot here, and if I missed anything or if you have additional comments/questions, feel free to re-post, PM me, or use the "contact us" form at for specifics. First, there is no requirement that you be a ranked player for us to consider you for funding. We are focused on finding accomplished players who demonstrate success over time, regardless of whether they are well-known or relatively anonymous. For evaluation purposes, our job is easier the more ... Posted in: Poker Discussion |
