Re:Stay at home dad, and make money playing poker? Is this possible?
This is a very critical point -- I think if we leave our wives to take care of the kids we are as bad off as if we ignore the kids. While it would be nice not to have to send a kid to daycare, you are better off with that than risking your marriage or even having a strenous home life. Not only does this put a large burden on your wife, but it will affect your mood. Also, along with the idea that one should make sure they are beating their games, I'd say you should also give staying at home with the kid a try before making any assumptions. I have a daughter and if I stay at home with her ...

Re(3): My letter to Senator David Vitter of La., and why you should contact your Senator also...
This, psycho, is a great take. There are more important things than poker playing (yes, even for those people who make a living doing this). I think it's a terrible piece of legislation, but I have to say that Democrats, far and wide, have been far worse at this legislating business. The Republicans have been bad, but the Democrats have been horrible. Please prioritize when you go to the polls, and consider defenseless people before you consider yourself (who, by in large, are much better off than most people in this world). The defenseless include children (born and unborn), the elderly, ...

Democrats, Republicans, it never mattered
I wanted to start a new thread because I think brianyut pointed out something worthwhile in this post: It's true that the libertarian party would almost fully be agreeable to the poker player's side of this issue, but no other party on the ballot would be. It looks bad to either party to be in support of online gaming (and the politicians you voted for, in equal irony, think you are stupid and don't understand nuance). On the other hand, it is more likely that the Republicans would nominate judges that would strike this down as unconstitutional (as ironic as that is). A constructionist ...

Re(6): Safe Port Act to be Signed October 13th
Actually, the same principles that may quash Roe v. Wade and have upheld the Patriot Act are allies for Poker players. Scalia, Thomas, Roberts, and Alito, I can almost assure, would say that this is unconstitutional. Still, it would take one more, and I'm not sure where that one would come from regarding the other five justices.

Re(2): If you haven't joined pokerxfactor, you despise money
One of the great things about PXF besides the training is the ability to upload hand histories and look at other members' hand histories. I can tell you that no one plays like Bax. Everyone uses what they have learned to make themselves better, but not everyone is going to be comfortable playing that way. Heck, Sheets and Bax don't even play the same -- they have arguments on the videos about how hands should be played, which hands are playable, and overall strategy (good hearted arguments where you can see the merits of both views). I can't claim to be a person who has won big since ...

Re(1): Why I support the internet poker ban
And such is the American way. There is nothing stopping a place like Wal-Mart from killing the local apothecary, either. The United States is based on personal freedoms and personal responsibility. There are many things the government does to take away from this (whether it be privacy issues or welfare programs for people who do not need it or whatever). But, in theory, we are to be about personal accountability. Unfortunately there are sick people. There will always be sick people. Many of these sick people will go from one vice to another if the former isn't available. Look at a guy like ...

Re(5): How Quick To Cash Out If OnLine Poker Banned?
Fox, I'm a fairly fundamental Christian (a very conservative Catholic, at least) and I think you are categorizing us as the enemy when most of us wouldn't support this kind of legislation. Please don't pin this on "Christians." There are a certain amount of people, religious and non-religious, who think this is gambling and hold all the connotations that have been attached over the years. My group of friends and family members would say they have as much of a right to make online poker illegal as they do banning smoking in private businesses (none, but that hasn't stopped them). I also think ...

Re(3): MTT strategies
The thing is that with Kill Phil you fold and fold and fold and fold and fold and fold and fold and fold and fold and then you get AA and go all in with 720 chips and the maniac who has raised the last 10 hands (and everyone is scared of him so he has like 6000 chips) calls you with K7 and the flop comes K77 with no further help. I would be interested to hear if people have tried Kill Phil and what their results have been (especially in micros). I don't think many people have the patience to go through all that folding (especially when you are dealt JJ or QQ on the button in the first level ...

Re(1): Internet access at Vegas hotels...?
At Harrah's it was $6 for an hour (yes!) and $10 for a 24-hour period. I think you could buy 3 days worth and get a small discount, but it was negligible. Anywhere in that small range of hotels, I think you would be able to pick it up (Imperial Palace, etc.). I think they have free wifi at a few places, like Panera (but if you are looking to play I doubt you want to sit in there for a whole tournament -- it would be fine if you were just looking to catch up on P5s or something).

Re(1): Which site for mtts?
On a related note, what is the best site for non-rebuy satelites to freezeout tournaments' Paradise use to have non-rebuy sats to rebuy tournaments (so your actual value is far less if you do sat in). Now I think it's the opposite (at least from a couple months ago when I was playing dise) -- rebuy sats into freezeouts. The problem is that the first scenario isn't for the small bankroll player (I wouldn't buy in to a $100 at this point, for instance let alone rebuy, so I'm giving up huge advantage to anyone who rebuys). The second scenario turns the sats into LOOOOONNNNNNGGGG tournaments (I ...

Re(5): Cardrunners
This is true and I think it's why many of us low-limit players don't like to take this plunge. However, the knowledge gained is something you won't lose (the book is only as good as the knowledge in it IF you read it). Let's face it, many of us won't take the time to read and re-read all of these books. Seeing video after video and having situations re-enforced is something we will take the time to do (it's slightly more of a passive activity than reading, and it's almost as if you are playing along so it's fun). I'm speaking as a member of PXF, though, and not Cardrunners. I have purchased ...

Todd's the first guy I really "followed" to the point of, when I was done playing for the night, checking to see if he was playing anything. He's been nothing but classy throughout. I was simply curious what was to be gained by saying that. I also suspected that there were plenty of other people who would benefit from knowing the explanation because, as I said, I know I'm not the only one who peeks in at this tournaments. Todd half-explained it in the room, but it wasn't very enlightening (heck, no one in this thread could explain it except Todd-- they only could use sarcasm or a general ...

There are tons of people who pop into these tournaments when they are nearing the end. I'm no different if I see a leader board like that one last night. There were ranked players all over that thing with 70 left. I didn't come out an accuse Todd of anything, either. I just didn't "get it." I could have asked in the poker room but I had a little more respect for someone who was down to the end of a pretty nice tournament. Would that have been more classy' Todd, how does it feel to have random people who want to come to your defense as if you aren't smart enough to come on here and explain ...

Thanks Todd. That's all I was wondering. I got in the room just in time to see you talk about KK vs. AA twice. One of these times you'll flop the set and go on to win. ;) I wasn't needling anyone -- I was just curious.

This looked like a classless thing. I was only inquiring as to get some humor that I might have missed. It wouldn't even have been the tenth worst thing I'd seen that day in the poker rooms, but then NSXT isn't the average player or sportsmen, either.

nsxt and bax
I was watching the Paradise Oyster tourney for a short while this evening (particularly interested because NSXT was sitting to the right of Bax) and I saw Bax get eliminated by NSXT when his KK ran into AA. If I remember right Bax raised and NSXT smooth called. A third guy re-raised and Bax went all in (with about 10k more chips than NSXT and I think less than the third guy). NSXT calls and the other guy folds. Immediately NSXT types (or enters) "nh." Bax kinda took offense to this a bit at least to the point of questioning why he would type that when he was the one with aces. NSXT tried to ...

Re(7): Larger buy-ins are easier than lower buy-in tourneys!
The idea that there is higher variance is interesting. It seems that, if anything, it would be higher at the higher buyins, though I am no actuarial statistician. Are we saying variance is dependent on other people's play as well as our own' For instance, if I always call at least a small raise with a pocket pair trying to flop a set, whether or not I flop the set is independent of the other players (regardless if one or nine other players are in the pot). Further, if we are taking into account the play of others, if every player made the exact same plays every time (say everyone was a PXF ...

Re(4): Low Buy-In Tournaments: How to Win?
I think this is sound advice. At the same time, I'll contend that $10 is the beginning of the medium buyins, and $15 is certainly in that. Not that a significant amount of people will follow Fox's school of bankroll management, but I think a lot of the donk level people start with a $50 or $100 buyin. That generally leaves them at $5.50 or $10 at the most (hence the beginning of the medium buyin). I could be wrong, because I've played 95% at the $5 or less level and 5% at the $25 level (tournies only) with entry chips, but I would hypothesize that the play gets quite a bit better at the $10 ...

Re(3): Low Buy-In Tournaments: How to Win?
By the way, GetRich, in my experience, sometimes the best way to win at these games is to register and walk away for 40-45 mins. Sure, you'll be down a couple hundred chips. But, at that point the maniacs will either be gone or have enough chips that they won't want to surrender a bunch of them to a huge bluff or calling a big pre-flop bet with J6. I know many people will say this is wrong and, quite simply, those are going to be the players that are better than me. It's virtually impossible, at this level, to know where your KK measures against five people who called a 300 chips pre-flop ...

Re(2): Low Buy-In Tournaments: How to Win?
There definitely is a fine line here that some of us are teetering on. I tend to agree with the people here having problems with the lower limits because of the bad play. At the same time, I don't pretend that I'd win any more at the higher levels, either. I think what I see here is that the complaints from the lower level players who are struggling would like to play good, solid, textbook poker and it just isn't possible at the lower levels. I mean, you can, and you will be successful ocassionally, but things will happen there that just don't happen very often at higher levels. Today I'm ...
