Which animal would you rather become?
Great White Shark Only because it gets to live underwater in the sea. The sea is an amazing thing as far out as great whites live, and just to be there with all the cool marine life would be amazing. Like permanently scuba diving but not needing all the equipment and none of the dangers of scuba diving as well.

Serious tipping thread.
I will say that working in a restaurant is harder work than anyone that has not worked in the industry would know. The jobs I've had from high school, through college, and after college are construction, landscaping, cooking in restaurants, and now a job working in marketing for an international company. Construction was the toughest, landscaping was the one I absolutely hated the most, restaurant was definitely the most stressful (but also the most fun), and my current job is the easiest. It has its stressful moments for sure, but sitting at a computer in the A/C sure as hell beats ...

I can agree with this point. It is all about the service that is provided. If the waiter is not making me feel like he is there to help me out and doesn't care to ask how things are or refill my drink when it is low then that takes away from the service and the tip goes down a little bit.

No, what I am saying is that when you are in a nicer restaurant there is a lot more work that goes into being a server than just saying "what can I get you", putting in the order, and bringing out the food. You are polishing wine glasses, making sure the table is set correctly, learning and memorizing specials and ingredients, learning the best way to sell these dishes, what to pair them with, etc and with extra work you should be awarded extra pay because your extra work is making for a better experience for the consumer...basically if you've never worked in the restaurant industry it is ...

Wait a minute, are you talking about cook time' If so, you really think a nicely prepared dinner with amazing side dishes are created by a chef and his sous chefs in the same amount of time a greasy 1/4lb burger is created with fries in a diner by a group of line cooks' And assuming the server put in the order after he received it then the amount of time it takes for it to be cooked is more-or-less out of his hands. Or are you discussing the amount of time the server is checking on your table, refilling beverages, etc'

Wow. $1.00 is not a great tip on $20.00 because it is a 5% tip. $3.00 - $5.00 is more acceptable. Servers at higher-end restaurants are actually required to ****STUDY*** and ****TEST*** the product. At a shitty diner you know what you're getting: a greasy hamburger. At a high end restaurant the servers are required to know every ingredient, cooking preparation, wine pairings, and know about every single featured item for the day. Shitty restaurants keep the same menu day-in and day-out but at nicer places the servers are required to put in much extra work to learn the product and actually ...

Not that it matters but you have "round up" and "round down" mixed up. He said he will round down the total (not the change) if it is less than 75 cents. So if it is 18.74 you get two 1's back instead of one and 26 cents if you pay with a twenty.

We completely understand what you are doing, we are just saying that in a number of restaurants we have been in you would be fired or at least spoken to and it would not be acceptable practice. To walk up to a group of foreigners and explain tipping is to stereotype, plain and simple. Um.
