**2012 OT MLB Power Rankings - Memorial Day Edition** If people don't want to be bombarded with stats, then they shouldn't make statements that can be proven wrong using stats. And yes, I realize I do this all the time, more than I probably should and it annoys the fuck out of people. Posted in: Off Topic |

Baseball Discussion May 28 - June 3 Man I sat above the dugout when the Angels came to town and got a good look at that guy's swing, and wow. So quick, so short to the ball. He swing effortlessly at two outside pitches and drove them into the left-center gap. He's a star. Posted in: Off Topic |

Baseball Discussion May 28 - June 3 I agree that a 'good pitch' is going to produce an out. Guys like Verlander, CC, Lee, Kershaw, you name it, if they make their pitch you probably aren't going to make good contact. But there are two issues with it - one is that the best pitchers in the league aren't always the guys with the lowest BABIPs (better pitches throw better pitches, so weaker contact in play doesn't hold up) and not everyone's defense and park is the same. ERA depends so heavily on defense that I'd rather look at things the pitcher actually controls. Posted in: Off Topic |

Baseball Discussion May 28 - June 3 Ha I love watching baseball as much as anyone I know. I've been to about half the Twins' home games this year. You have to LOVE baseball in order to watch that team play. Posted in: Off Topic |

Baseball Discussion May 28 - June 3 Those don't have anything to do with actual pitching skill, like throwing the ball to the batter. That's all about the pitchers' fielding skill. We're evaluating the actual act of throwing the ball to the hitter. Posted in: Off Topic |

Baseball Discussion May 28 - June 3 Being able to complete the play is very important, obviously. But you need to be able to get to the ball to actually make a play on it. Derek Jeter is a great shortstop as long as the ball is hit right at him. The Giants do a good job of getting to balls and turning them into outs. In fact, they do this at the 11th best rate in the game. There is no way you can dispute this fact. Posted in: Off Topic |

Baseball Discussion May 28 - June 3 I agree with that. Good pitchers will make it tougher for hitters to make solid contact, but it still doesn't mean that they have any control over the hits they allow. CC Sabathia had a .318 BABIP last year. Halladay's was .298. You can't tell me those guys are easier to get hits off than Josh Tomlin (.253). Posted in: Off Topic |

Baseball Discussion May 28 - June 3 Baseball is a very complex game, I understand that. But defensive efficiency tells a whole hell of a lot more about the Giants defense than you simply watching the games does. I don't even think watching on TV gives you a very good idea of how good defensively a team is, either. The most important thing on defense is range (so reads, footwork, etc.) and unless you're physically at the game watching, you aren't going to be able to tell how a player is positioned, what kind of jump he got, pretty much everything other than whether or not he makes the play. official awesome foods that are terrible for you thread The sauce that won is called shark sauce, which is their buffalo sauce & bbq sauce mixed. I have the recipe for the buffalo sauce, but im not sure what they use for the bbq sauce though. Might just be standard bbq sauce. The buffalo sauce is the most popular at the restaurant though, the shark sauce is just more unique. Both are just incredible. Posted in: Off Topic |

Baseball Discussion May 28 - June 3 Batting average and defensive efficiency are quite similar. Batting avg is the amount of hits divided by at bats. Easy. 3 hits in 10 at bats, .300 hitter. Defensive efficiency is balls put in play turned into outs. 10 balls put in play, 7 turned into outs. .700 'outs avg.'. Its saying the same thing, but for some reason you think you know better. It takes into account balls put in play turned into outs. So if a double play was turned, it would count as two outs on one play. You can't say 'the amount of times a double play should've been turned', because you should never assume the double ... Posted in: Off Topic |

Baseball Discussion May 28 - June 3 What you're saying is basically the same as saying a guy who is a .300 hitter isn't actually hitting .300 because you watch every game and see it with your own eyes. They're 11th in baseball in converting balls in play into outs. I can't believe this is even a discussion. You're wrong and there's no way to defend it. Posted in: Off Topic |

Baseball Discussion May 28 - June 3 Vogelsong has induced 5 double plays this year (league leader is at 12). That puts him in a tie for 59th. For a guy who 'induces a ton of groundballs', that's not very many double plays. Posted in: Off Topic |

Baseball Discussion May 28 - June 3 That's great that they lead the majors in errors. They also rank 11th in defensive efficiency, which measures the % of balls put in play that the defense turns into outs. And since they play in a bigger park, they are 9th in park-adjusted defensive efficiency. Both of those would rank in the "above-average" or "good" category. Posted in: Off Topic |

Baseball Discussion May 28 - June 3 No, it is what you're saying when you say that Vogelsong was the best pitcher in the NL last month because literally the only thing he has going for him was a low ERA (which was the 2nd best next to Bud Norris). FIP and xFIP are miles better than ERA because it measures things the pitcher actually controls - so not the defense behind him. They aren't 'experimental' at all. They measure exactly what the pitcher controls - strikeouts, walks, and home runs (FIP measures HR allowed, xFIP is neutralized). BABIP (so, defense) is normalized, because we know a pitcher has no control over what ... Posted in: Off Topic |

Baseball Discussion May 28 - June 3 I do watch the games, and I've been unimpressed with Vogelsong. He has decent control but no pitch that would grade as above average for me. I like his two-seamer, but he doesn't seem to generate a huge number of ground balls. He's a nice back-end guy in the NL, but he benefited by pitching 4 of those 6 games in San Fran. The Giants also have a good defense, which Vogelsong has absolutely no control over. But please, tell me how "wildly overrated" FIP and xFIP are compared to ERA. Posted in: Off Topic |

Baseball Discussion May 28 - June 3 Yes, that 26/19 K/BB ratio really looks great for Vogelsong. That ERA definitely has nothing to do with his defense/park/competition. He posted the 33rd best FIP and 60th best xFIP in the NL in May (out of 64 qualified starters). He has no business winning this, or any, award. Posted in: Off Topic |

official awesome foods that are terrible for you thread It was smart of me to read this after lunch. My two favorite are wings from the Parrot's Cay in Grand Forks, ND (don't get back home as often as I'd like, but the wings are fuckin money). Found a grainy picture online: It actually won a national wing contest a few years ago: Then there's the Hot & Spicy chicken from Kinh Do in Minneapolis. Basically any spicy vietnamese/chinese food I can get my hands on. Om nom nom nom Posted in: Off Topic |
