skeeze666's 2012 Year In Review (Movies) TL;DR The Thin Red Line might be my favorite film of all time. I love every film on that list, but two real gems that are often overlooked are Sugar--which is the story of a Dominican minor league pitcher in the US and Memories of Murder-- possibly the best serial killer/police procedural I have seen in the last 20 years. skeeze666's 2012 Year In Review (Movies) TL;DR It's probably very close with the performance in Syriana; maybe the physical transformation is what puts that performance over the top for a lot of people. I love Michael Clayton (I read that Denzel Washington actually turned that role down, can't imagine how he would have done, but it would have been interesting) but I will take the Clooney's nuanced subtlety in The American over the exuberance of Michael Clayton, I think. skeeze666's 2012 Year In Review (Movies) TL;DR The American is very underrated. It is like an homage to some of the 70s procedural films, like a cross between The Conversation and The Day of the Jackal. I also think it is Clooney's best performance to date and that includes Syriana, Michael Clayton, The Descendants and Up in the Air. Most people dont have the patience to fully appreciate it, which is fine. Posted in: Off Topic |

skeeze666's 2012 Year In Review (Movies) TL;DR Beasts of the Southern Wild was my favorite film of the year, but maybe I'll do something a bit different and list my favorite film of the year for each of the past 15 years. 1998-- The Thin Red Line (Malick) 1999-- Buena Vista Social Club (Wenders) 2000-- American Psycho (Harron) 2001-- In the Bedroom (Field) 2002-- 25th Hour (Lee) 2003-- Memories of Murder (Joon-ho) 2004-- Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (Gondry) 2005-- The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada (Jones) 2006-- The Lives of Others (Von Donnersmarck) 2007-- No Country for Old Men (Coen Brothers) 2008-- Hunger ... pacquiao/marquez 4 Those who think boxing is dead should watch Rios-Alvarado and Guerrero-Berto. The heavyweight division will come back; there was a period for about 10 years between the mid-late 70s and mid 80s (post Ali/Frazier/Foreman and pre Tyson) where the division was ruled by Larry Holmes and a bunch of fat, out of shape guys. Then we had Tyson, Holyfield, Lewis and Bowe. I am not saying they are the saviors of the division but there are a couple of Brits (Tyson Fury and David Price) who are bigger than the Klitschko brothers but not nearly as methodical and more exciting to watch for the casual fan. ... RIP Emanuel Steward One of the greatest boxing trainers of our time, trained hall of famers such as Tommy Hearns and Lennox Lewis. He was also the trainer of the current heavyweght champ Wladimir Klitchko. He was also a longtime boxing analyst for HBO and was ringside for some of the best of fights of this era. His unforgettable "This should be the round of the century" call after Round 9 of the first Gatti-Ward fight will probably stay with with until the day I die. Posted in: Off Topic |
