Fall Marathon Training Thread
I did Chi marathon a few years back, get over those injuries and enjoy the race man, nothing feels quite like crossing the finish line in front of a jam packed crowd after running 26.2 miles.

Barca has some of the worst divers in football but also some of the best players in football that practically never dive (Iniesta, Xavi, Messi). Wash IMO.

Do you want to make money? Let me tell you how
Pretty sure stackinsideways just watched Zeitgeist and now thinks he knows everything. As for the raising taxes bit, I attended a pretty convincing lecture recently where a Harvard economist showed evidence that during recessions raising taxes is actually ineffectual at reducing the deficit. Basically, he was arguing that raising taxes is only a short-term fix and the best way to reduce the deficit long-term is cutting spending, a lot of it has to do with confidence and money velocity. Raising taxes lowers people's confidence and willingness to spend which lowers the multiplier effect and ...

The War Walmart in DC and NYC
Just because globalization has helped to develop some economies doesn't mean that it is the only mechanism at work or that it is universally good nor that it is stupid to point out the places where people are exploited and still poor. Maybe time will heal all wounds, but I think iin order for globalization to continue the way it is there always needs to be someone to be exploited.

Absolutely, but how do you fix the biggest government/(judicial) error of giving corporations the rights of persons. Now they exert power over governmental systems and will throw enormous amounts of money at any regulation aimed to repeal their rights' You are naming the exceptions. PM the rest of Southeast Asia, Latin America, South America and Africa. And the countries you named have had mostly stable governments that invest the money back into infrastructure and education which is the main reason for the continued growth. Th other places have corrupt regimes that hoard the money for ...

I agree with everything you said, my point is that when the corporations move into poor countries with corrupt regimes, the rule rather than the exception is that it does not spur economic growth and the people in that area receive almost no benefit. What'

Freedom of movement is fine but when that movement is to tax havens who are competing with each other to give the most breaks to corporations and lower wages to the employees, it has the same result. I understand what you are saying though, globalization is great in theory, free markets, free movement of capital and labor -- but it just isn't happening, similar to how socialism is great in theory but leads to dictatorships and a wealthy elite and a suffering poor, globalization with MNC's works in the same way.

The War Walmart in DC and NYC
Some pretty solid economics discussion going on in this thread. A few people fail to realize that every benefit has a cost whether its hidden or explicit. Most people know the hidden cost of eating cheap fast food every day is high health care costs as you turn into a fat, unhealthy sack of shit but others are harder to discern (and can be paid by society as a whole). Really the problems all boil down to the corporatism and the fact that multi-nationals have outgrown and over-powered the system that created them. When multinationals can move anywhere they want in the world to avoid paying ...

Yeah and it's a shame to send a player off who obviously is playing his hardest to win in one of the biggest stages in all of football but you cannot just go full tilt all the time, you have to play smart and know your opponents. I would give it a 50/50 ratio though, learn from the mistake and move forward Pepe.

The low prices that we benefit from always have a cost, usually "hidden" or externalized on other poor people (generally in other countries now, thanks globalization!) - in the form of low wages of the people producing the goods, lack of health care, habitat destruction through cutting costs on proper removal of waste, etc.

What you can't see in the slow-mo replays is that Pepe went flying full speed across the field to make the challenge on Alves. Knowing Alves is a diver should have prevented him from doing that. Yes, he got the ball but from the referee's perspective you have a known wild-man charging full speed across the field, leaving his feet with studs showing and knocking down a Barca player, it is easy to see why he gave the red. That being said, it should have been a yellow and it was very disappointing that that foul changed the entire complexity of the game. But, some blame must go on Pepe, next ...
