PocketFives Scouting Report
The voice of the World Poker Tour (WPT) since its debut in the United States in 2003, Mike Sexton brought a bevy of new players into the game, including many of the industry’s top stars. His compelling commentary and passion for the game combined with Chris Moneymaker’s win during the 2003 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event are directly responsible for the modern poker boom.
During the 1989 WSOP, Sexton scored a bracelet in a $1,500 buy-in Limit Seven Card Stud High-Low event for $104,000, defeating Sid “The Kid” Herald heads-up. In the 2006 WSOP Tournament of Champions, Sexton bested a final table that included Daniel Negreanu, Mike Matusow, Andy Black, and Kido Pham for $1 million. Sexton also defeated a talented field during the 2003 Euro Finals of Poker Heads-Up Championship in Paris for €65,000, three years after taking down its Main Event for 1.1 million French Francs, and has been dominating the poker scene longer than many online poker players have been alive.
Along with Jan Fisher, Linda Johnson, and Lisa Tenner, Sexton founded Poker Gives in 2009, which has quickly grown into a popular charity organization. Poker Gives has supported the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund, the Special Olympics, and the Paralyzed Veterans of America. Sexton is an ambassador, card room consultant, and host at PartyPoker, one of the largest online poker sites in the world. He re-signed with the room in early 2009.
