Shoving range M<7 You're talking about the type of hands that MIGHT call the shove and the equity they share. People fold more often than they call, so 3:1 isn't that big of a difference when you're scooping chips off the table uncontested most of the time. In THIS moment, with THIS hand, against THESE opponents, with my CURRENT IMAGE and under the CURRENT TABLE DYNAMICS, equity doesn't mean as much. What's more important is: "Does my shove look strong'" "Who am I shoving against'" "How many times have they seen me shove from this spot'" This game is more about psychology than it is about math. You're ... Posted in: Poker Discussion |

Preflop - Raising vs. Flatting AA I like flatting if I'm confident I'll still be heads-up when the flop comes down. Flatting in this spot means a 3-way flop a lot of the time.. Posted in: Poker Discussion |

Shoving range M<7 I'm just using the hand as an example to illustrate the fact that the equity between two unpaired hands isn't usually that great of a difference. I had processed the "M" as BBs. So for clarity, with 7 BBs, I'll ship ANY TWO cards from the hi-jack. But with an M OF 7, I'm likely to ship with almost any pair, 98s, JTs, any suited Q, and AKo+. And in terms of "success", I don't play a hand in a tournament thinking "what's the best move here OVER THE LONG RUN". I only think in terms of "I need accumulate chips NOW" to stay in this tournament". I understand the math, I understand "equity", ... Posted in: Poker Discussion |

Shoving range M<7 Errrr. Reading "17-25bb stack" changes things for me. With a 17-25bb stack, your best play is always a 3-bet all-in against a loose player. Open shipping that many chips is only get called by a big hand. So ya, the times you get folds you pick up the blinds and antes, but the times you get called you're going to have to get lucky with most of your hands. It's better to 3-bet shove all-in with the same range here. When you get folds, you get the blinds, the antes AND the opening raiser's chips. And, typically, the hands you'll be facing when you get called are maybe a little weaker. Posted in: Poker Discussion |

Preflop - Raising vs. Flatting AA I don't mind a 4-bet here. Both the original raiser and the 3-bettor could both hurt your chances of winning the tournament. If you just flat here, you're giving away your equity and giving both deep stacks an opportunity to catch up to you and bust your stack. If these guys were shallow and couldn't hurt your stack quite as bad, then I would consider flatting here and taking a chance at increasing your stack through being deceptive, knowing that I'll still have chips to work with if I lose the hand. I think shipping it here actually looks very strong considering who was doing the betting ... Posted in: Poker Discussion |

Shoving range M<7 Any two cards that I expect to be live if I get called. Ideally connectedness and suitedness would be extremely helpful, but even 32o is only a 2:1 dog against any two over cards. And unless you're shoving with AA, there's always going to be a chance that someone wakes up with an over pair to your hand. If you're that short in a tournament, you have a lonnnnng way to go still, so you should be more willing to gamble in these spots. If you don't steal the blinds and antes here or double up, you're going to be real hurt when the next level hits. Throw playing "correct poker" out the window ... Posted in: Poker Discussion |

QQ how badly did i play this ? You're 7-handed, very deep, have a premium hand and you're in position. By flatting the 3-bet, you're making it more attractive for the original raiser to come along for the ride. As big a hand QQ is, it doesn't play very well in a 3-way flop. Any A-high, K-high, or TJ combo flop should make you feel very uncomfortable. Especially being 7-handed, the 3-bettor could have quite a number of hands (knowing it doesn't take much for amijo to open with a raise). Flatting the 3-bet doesn't give you any information as to what gena 77 has. You're deep enough to 4-bet here. If gena 77 ... Posted in: Poker Discussion |

Stars $109 Final Table - Very different spot 3-betting from the SB rarely ends the hand immediately and exposes your hand's strength right away. So even if the original raiser has a weak hand, he can still call and play you while in position; floating/betting if you shut down. Flatting in the SB gives you a chance to disguise your hand, and it also gives the BB a chance to squeeze. If our villain does have any kind of hand, we're really only worried about a couple of different flops. If the flop comes down Ace-high, we have a chance to get away from our hand cheaply. And I'm going broke on any Q-high board all day long. Re-raising ... Posted in: Poker Discussion |

flop top pr vs agg player, brd runout, horrible... call or fold? I 3bet/flat 4bet pre against hyper/aggressive villain. I want to define his range before I even see a flop, and preflop is the easiest/cheapest place to do that. I still call the flop, only not wanting to see an Ace or a Queen on the turn. I bet/raise the turn to find out if the Queen actually helped him. The line you took, I call the river and "nh" the man, then go back to work with 45bbs (which would still give me a couple of open-steal opportunities or one or two 3bet steal opportunities while I wait for my big hand/s). book advice Arnold Snyder has written a book called The Poker Tournament Formula: New Strategies to Beat No-Limit Hold 'em Poker Tournaments. What's unique about it is that he doesn't talk much about how to play certain hands in certain situations, but instead he talks at length about poker tournament structures and the influence they should have on strategy. More specifically, he talks about the structures of "faster" tournaments with blinds less than 60 minutes long. He explains how and why the structure of the tournaments changes your strategy, the value of the cards, and the pace at which you ... Posted in: Poker Discussion |

Re:How do you "chip-up" safely? Raise the blinds of average stacks or people who don't defend or play very tight. Don't be afraid to fold after open-raising, especially if you're going to be out of position. Re-raise people who raise often. Shove if you have to avoid them re-raising you back (you're just trying to get them to fold), but make sure you're getting them in with a hand taht isn't likely to be dominated (suited connectors against people who play a lot of big aces, and aces against people who raise with a wide range). Raise twice per round regardless of your cards. Be that guy. Posted in: Poker Discussion |

Re:wwyd on the river here I like calling if it means I'm still going to have plenty of chips left to get people to fold if I lose. If I don't, I like shoving. He plays the hand like AA or KK, and the 1/3 pot bet on the river looks very much like a value bet. I'm betting into that flop with two other people in the pot hoping to get a call from an AQ/JJ/QQ type hand. Giving free cards to two players is very suspicious. I'm calling on the river and keeping my 50 big blinds to play on if I lose and being grateful for the 45 I just picked up if he does have AK. Posted in: Poker Discussion |

Re:Postflop with KK If he has nothing, he is still going to fold to a smaller raise, but it would also still give him an opportunity to shove back over top of you if he thinks you're just messing around. I'd raise him 2-2.5x on the flop hoping for a call or a shove, taking a fold as consolation. By shoving here, you're making your hand pretty transparent and he is only going to call you with a made hand. Posted in: Poker Discussion |

Re:AQo overplayed ? I'd probably fold. That's a 3x raise from an UTG+1 raiser with 5 left behind me. I hate not being first person in the pot and I'd rather hold on to my chips for one more steal attempt before I'm putting my whole stack in first. Re:bad beats due to very tight play ? It's not "the more tight you play, the more often you get bad beats". It's "the tighter you play, you'll remember a higher percentage of the hands that you suffer 'bad beats' on because more of your 'beats' will be 'bad beats'." Just play your hands, and the only thing you need to be conscious of is whether or not you made the right decision before all of the chips went in. This is a game of decision making and nothing more. So you should be evaluating your play based on your decisions, not your outcomes. "Did I make the right ... Posted in: Poker Discussion |

Re:Poker on a resume? Your resume should be tailored to the job you are trying to get. And poker is more of a business than it is a job. Being a "professional poker player" makes you an entrepreneur. So if you could see yourself putting something like "Owned and Operated a Mcdonald's 2006-2008" on your resume, then you should feel just as comfortable putting "Professional Poker Player" on your resume. But, again, keep in mind, when someone is looking at your resume, they are looking for things that are relevent to the job they are screening for. If what you've learned through ... Re:$26 35k - QQ on the flop multiway If the big blind had better than 66, he would probably want to lead out with a probing bet to find out if anybody has the King. When you check behind, it looks like you either have AK+ or a pair smaller than a King, and you want to keep the pot small or get to see a free turn. So when it gets back to the C/O, he expects the BB to insta-fold and is hoping that you missed and/or can fold an under-pair. Posted in: Poker Discussion |
