I need some books
Agree. I found the book very disturbing, bleak, and unenjoyable to read at certain parts. When I finished the book I thought it was great. If that makes any sense.

Re:Unions are a major problem in todays economy
I totally agree with this too sax. Working in Alberta I only see one side of the story. All I see is Big Oil throwing money at the conservative Government to try and influence policy that will break the unions. Believe me our union has had to fight hard for everything we got with absolutely zero help from our Government. I would imagine things are a little different in Saskatchwan (or so I've heard).

Re:Unions are a major problem in todays economy
Just because we have a socialized healthcare system doesn't mean we're socialists. You guys have some socialized systems too don't ya' Therefore most Americans are, to a degree, socialist. ;-) Fyi most Canadians know our healthcare system is flawed. I hear the complaints about our wait times every day. Most just believe our system is better than yours. Me' I'm not so sure. I see both good and bad things about each.

Re:Unions are a major problem in todays economy
Actually I was rooting for McCain although his running mate scared the shit out of me a little bit. I was just saying if you're that uneducated that you really truely believe Canada is a socialist country than you're probably ignorant when it comes to your knowledge of other topics as well (i.e. unions)

Lol thats your retort to all the examples I've given itt "Canada, do what ever you want. I don't care." Just because we have Universal Healthcare doesn't mean we're socialists. Fyi a little research online will show u that our government is more business friendly than yours.

Re:Unions are a major problem in todays economy
I would if it didn't have certain perks like benefits/pension. Someone has to work the dangerous jobs. Shouldn't they be compensated well for it' Without a union agreement most* companies will f#%k their employees in the ass six ways to sunday. *I've worked both sides of the fence and seen it with my own two eyes. From factory work to warehouse work to construction work. You wouldn't believe the shit these non-union companies pull. The last non-union job site I worked on they tried to get us to sign waivers to work national/provinical holidays for straight time. They told ...

Re:Unions are a major problem in todays economy
^^^^I know what u mean. Even worse in Alberta. Big Oil are flying foreign workers from Mexico and the Philippines to work for pennies while Alberta/Canadian workers sit at home or have their hours cut back. The anti-union right wing Conservative government let this happen. It just shows u they don't give a fuck about the people of their provinice. They should be telling Big Oil that since the oil they are extracting is our non-renewable natural resource they have to put Canadian workers to work and keep the foreigners out. You think Big Oil cares about Alberta and its workers. When ...

Re:Unions are a major problem in todays economy
I know. Thats the argument I always get. I feel bad for these people. They really don't know any better. Its all they've ever known. Their parents and grandparents before them both worked there. It's a sin that these people have no one to stand up for them. Just because they're simple uneducated folk doesn't mean they deserve to be taken advantage of and treated like shit. They work hard everyday and should be compensated fairly for it imo.

Re:Unions are a major problem in todays economy
Its illegal here too. That goes back to my point of the greedy immoral owners taking advantage of a poor uneducated workforce. When I was 17 or 18 years old and making $300 dollars a week I thought that was the best thing ever even if I had to work 80 hours for it. And that illegal activity is only the tip of the iceberg. I could go on, like hiding truckloads of dead crab from the inspectors, and than cooking it and packaging it as soon as they leave. For those that don't know it is against the law to cook and sell dead crab. People itt saying that unions aren't needed in this day ...

Re:Unions are a major problem in todays economy
Try telling that to some of the folks in my home province. A lot of the smaller outport towns here have only one "trade", fishplant worker. I've worked in one in my younger years. The owners treat their workers like shit. There is absolutely no safety program. You work when the owners need u to work and for as long as they want you to work. All for straight time. There's no such thing as time and a half. I've punched 15 hour days, 90+ hour weeks when I was there. All for straight time. If u complain they fire u simple as that. On any given day there is 20 or 30 ...

Re:Unions are a major problem in todays economy
Ok I'll tell it from my perspective. I'm a construction worker in the Alberta oilfields (pipefitter by trade) and have worked both sides of the fence in my time. Currently I'm a member of Local 488 pipefitters/welders/plumbers union. This is how it works: -An oil company (i.e. Imperial Oil) has a construction job they need completed in a specific time. They put the job up for bid for a certain $$ amount (i.e. 10 million) -The Union sends in negotiators as does the Non-union sector companies to bid on the job. Than Imperial Oil will decide who they want to give the job to. - Now ...

Re:My issue with smokers.
Not true. Tobacco taxes pay for smokers. A study done in Alberta a few years back found that smoking and all related illnesses cost our healthcare system $800 million, but the Government collected 1 billion in tabocco taxes. I'm willing to bet these numbers are similar in other Canadian provincies. The Government actually makes $$ off of smokers.
