Why do we so fetishize strict obedience in this culture' When Catholic priests protested the Vietnam war by illegally entering draft offices and destroying their records they initially received long jail sentences. Except later, when courts allowed defenses that spoke to the reasons for their actions the charges were always dismissed. To paraphrase Zinn, there is a moment where the pursuit of justice exceeds the rule of law. The history of political disobedience in this country bears that out.

"If properly ratified then treaties are as law" So when the government has broken these treaties over and over again, what is the proper recourse' I really hope you aren't thinking "the courts" right now. Pine Ridge is a particularly important example. The reservation has been continuously chopped up, sold, used to test bombs and strip mined since it was first ratified in 1868. That the government never planned on honoring it's treaty should be of no surprise.

erm I just posted that because every other post in this thread perpetuated this myth that all living on the reservations just smoke weed and count their stacks of money all day. I admitted that it was from the poorest reservation because it's the polar opposite of how people living on reservations were being portrayed (all with anecdotal evidence at that).
