OT Cooking Thread I like pan frying sliced carrots in bacon grease, garlic, onion, and thyme a healthy pinch of kosher salt (I do the same technique with lots of vegetables). I used to hate cooked carrots. They were always cooked to be too sweet, like yams or something. Posted in: Off Topic |

OT Cooking Thread A cast iron skillet isn't going to be hurt the way non-stick will. I wash all of mine regularly. I've used steel wool on it when I wanted to get it back to like-new. I rarely have to scrub on it much, because I can cook high and fast and it's seasoned pretty well. I dry it on the burners so it doesn't rust. Mostly I don't find it hard to clean, because I almost always deglaze my pan drippings and make sauces so anything that might've otherwise been stuck to the pan but instead become the best part of the meal so it's just a matter of rinsing and wiping it out and putting it on a burner to ... Monsanto Protection Act/Frankenfish I've thought a lot about patent law lately, and I'm starting to believe that patents are the root of many of the problems with our economy today. A person can innovate some solution while employed by a place, and lose all rights to their own work, that company can lay them off, and sell the solution while outsourcing the labor and locking everyone else out of the market for that solution. I believe there would be much less centralization of wealth in the country if patent law was changed very significantly. And labor would mean something again. Particularly when patent law has such a high ... Posted in: Off Topic |

OT Cooking Thread Nice skillets. I have used cast iron skillets I got at a yard sale that I use for almost everything, ignoring about 10 other pans/skillets. I also have a hand-me-down, oil-filled saladmaster electric skillet I use occasionally for some stuff, but seasoned iron skillets are pretty close to perfect. Posted in: Off Topic |

Monsanto Protection Act/Frankenfish So, I'm still not sure, who here supports legislation that prevents a judge or jury from hearing a case about any of the risks of any patented GMOs' I agree that genetically modified crops are common ad not new, but if science proves a patented organism is demonstrated to be harmful (environmental/health/other), why would we strip the judicial system from authority to intercede' A lot of debate over whether GMOs are good or bad, but it seems like there should be a consensus among regular citizens regarding whether a case can even be brought up and whether judicial powers would be limited ... A conservative student's take on public school indoctrination Which couldn't be further from the truth. Skepticism is favorable among rationalists, but skepticism is not the same as disbelief. The other side of the debate tend to argue that faith is the "the other opinion". Understanding irrationality is an important lesson for science students, and if I was a science teacher I would happily teach the kids about that, but I would bet I would get feedback from the angry radical fundamentalists. A conservative student's take on public school indoctrination Bias is bias, there is no balance to bias. Two opposing biased opinions combined together do not arrive at or form an unbiased conclusion. Teachers who are allowed to openly address controversy help foster intellectual curiosity in students. Some of the best teachers were capable of teaching students with their bias, asking students to consider it, and most of those arguments against this methodology are those who do not want their children 'exposed' to that particular lesson. I'm not entirely opposed to it being taught in a classroom. It doesn't have to get equal time or coverage. It ... Posted in: Off Topic |

A conservative student's take on public school indoctrination I don't understand what people think unbiased even means. Normative standards create bias in every classroom. Do you the communist ideology is taught in US schools without bias' Or the vulnerability of capitalist meritocracy' Or the outcomes of wars' Sexual morality is enforced with the more fervor than violent morality. I do not agree with everything teachers tell my kids, which is why I talk to them. We regularly discuss morality, politics, personal relationships, etc. My hope is not that they adopt my personal beliefs, nor is it my fear that they absorb the beliefs of the ...
