HDMI would be used for a HD DVD or Blue-Ray player or even a gaming system. Both sound and video are carried by one cord... as far as the 1600 x 1200 this is likely a video card issue meaning u prolly need a upgrade... also, depends how u have the monitor hooked up i.e. 15 pin standard or DVI '
