**2012 OT MLB Power Rankings - Memorial Day Edition**
i understand, but a lot of times its statements that cant be proven wrong such as "..Melky is on fucking fire lately, average is up to .372 now". All of a sudden 3 people are there with "well, his BABIP is .480 this month, no way he can sustain this, its a fluke". Ya, no shit its a fluke, thats what makes it interesting, not a bunch of metrics that leave it cold and lifeless. Its not just you, its others, people are using metrics to spew hate on players and other posters. Theyve basically become like the OT libertarians of the baseball threads, the "I have the only right answer to every ...

what'! It seems no one can make a post in a baseball thread without 6 people swooping in and having to exercise some kind of saber-dominance. Not necessarily saying its you, but its been pervasive lately (forever). A lot of people are getting fed up with it.

Obviously I cant dispute the fact that they are 11th in that stat. I can dispute how that stat translates into actual game play. I admit I also factor in decision making when judging a player on defensive efficiency. Hell, we had a guy playing 2nd run to cover 1st on a double play ball to short this year...that kind of shit doesnt show up on stat sheets and efficiency rankings. How and what kind of errors are important, I just dont think your stat is a true indicator of those kinds of factors.

why do pitchers automatically have no control over the hits they allow' what about grounders to first where the pitcher is late covering and the guy beats it out' Or swinging bunts that have to be fielded by the pitchers, or grounders up the middle that the pitcher could get to but doesnt'

well, youre finally right about something, its easier to judge those things when youre at the game as opposed to watching on tv. I know much better than you what is important when discussing defense, and all the range in the world dont mean shit if you cant complete the play. Dont try and tell me about footwork, jump off the bat, instincts, etc, because theres nothing you can teach me in that area of the game. What im saying is the stat sheet doesnt illustrate how bad this team has been on defense. By no means am I going to pull a krs and claim to have watched every game played by every team ...

I will definitely be back to continue this conversation if youre up for it, but I have to take my kid to his tee ball practice. Im looking forward to crushing a bunch of 4 year olds dreams by telling them their .894 batting average is simply not sustainable over the long haul and that their horrible xFIP means they should just give up the game before they embarrass themselves.

a-ha! Yes, the company line is "you never assume the double play", yet if you watch the game and know baseball, you know when a team should have turned a double play or not. You have a 1st and 3rd with 1 out situation, and a routine 2 hopper is hit to short. Crawford fields it, flips to Burriss who has all the time in the world, yet he throws it high, pulling Belt off the bag allowing the runner on 3rd to score and that run is the difference in the game. It doesnt go down as an error, nor will it show up as a negative in your defensive effficiency stats, yet everyone and their mother who was ...

So a guy is hitting .300, but i'm saying he's not because ive watched every game with my own eyes' I dont remember ever saying anything about any hitter in this conversation. Now you're putting words in my mouth. And you didnt answer my question, does your stat take into account the times a double play should have been turned, but only 1 out is actually recorded' I'm not debating the fact that theyre 11th in your stat, I'm saying the stat is flawed.

thats a perfect example of the difference between reading the stat sheet and watching every game. I have watched every Giants game this season and I wouldnt classify their defense as good. They have easily given away 5 wins directly because of their defense, although its been better the last couple weeks (since they started Arias and Blanco full time). Crawford cant throw to 1st base on a fly, anyone not named Belt has sucked at 1st, 2nd base has been a revolving door, etc. Thats why I laughed when you said you watch their games, then in the next sentence said something that you would know is ...

in fairness though, there are a lot of plays that would have been groundballs, but the "good" Giants defense catches them before they hit the ground, turning them into flyball outs. If you look at his ABoB (angle of the ball off the bat) metric, you'll see that a majority of batted balls off vogelsong go straight down, yet the huge range of the Giants infielders causes them to be right there.

in before everyone says "what the hell does marc know, hes a dodger fan" :) the best part is that i was merely trying to outdo pgh's pirate homerificness with some giants homerism of my own when i brought up vogelsong (although hes had an incredible month), when suddenly the posse came out full force with the Vogey hate.

actually errors arent even really up to the fielders if we can be technical here, its about quality of the infield dirt and outfield grass, and weather conditions. If you adjust for FQv (the field quality variable) and W+Bq (wind and barometric quotient), you would see that in a vacuum, the Giants would only have 33 errors instead of 51 this year.

i know, right' Errors arent a measure of defense, era doesnt mean anything when it comes to pitching...next it'll be "well hits and home runs aren't an accurate barometer of offensive production, its all about some stats that eggheads who never played the game came up with". Its gotten ridiculous.

sorry, I was too busy laughing at your "I watch the games, the Giants have a good defense...." combo there.. I had to do some research just to confirm what I suspected, the Giants lead the majors in errors. Their infield defense has been especially atrocious, which is probably why they also lead the league in unearned runs allowed. Come on krs, you're better than this. It's ok for someone to not think your favorite stat is the be-all end-all when talking about players. lol Giants have a good defense, haha. Hey, Ive been watching the Twins play, they have 2 former mvp's on their team, so they ...
