Civil Forfeiture Claim Deadline for our money at Full Tilt and UB is tomorrow.
The decision as to whether to file a claim of not is an individual one and the PPA was not and is not trying to tell anyone whether they should or should not have filed. The PPA (even if it thought it was a good idea) could not file claims on everyone's behalf for a large variety of legal reasons. So instead the PPA published the information guide so everyone could make up their own mind as to the best way to protect their individual interests. I do you hope you have the guide and read more than just the sample claim form that was supplied, isuck123. The claim form was pretty simple - but ...

PPA sponsered rally in DC on 5/24
Thanks Dan, that was a great article. This is not meant to be a giant rally and it is understood that it is short notice and on a work day. The rally is really just a compliment to the real work of the day, which is the individual meetings between player and representative. Still a hundred or so extra people would be nice given the number of online poker players who live within a morning's drive to DC. Join us if you can! Skallagrim

In FTP's most recent statement regarding US player funds they said they are working through this issue. I have no other information.

Lets play poker! Lets play online! Lets tell our government we are adults and free!
I wish you guys luck and hope you find a good place to continue to play. But the only way poker players are going to get back anything similar to what we lost on Black Friday is for the laws to change. It is wrong to say that the DOJ action was not about online poker (offering online poker to be exact, not playing online poker). 8 of the 9 charges brought against the site owners directly charge them with operating "an illegal gambling business." The same charges could be brought at any time against any other site that lets US residents play for real money. Some sites still open to Americans ...

Poker Players Alliance Disappointed Congress Failed to Regulate Poker and Protect Con
It is unfortunate IMHO that not a lot of substantive discussion happens on the Pocket5s forum. For whatever reason it seems most folks prefer to discuss law and legislative matters over at 2+2. I have tried to respond to most of your posts here Jennifear, because I really want you to be part of the discussion. I agree the Reid bill was a "tremendous disappointment" for anyone hoping that Congress would just legalize the current games, maybe add a tax, and then be done with it. But that is not a realistic possibility given the current state of US politics. I disagree that "the majority of ...

Republicans suck...
I might quibble with the part of your statement that says "2 years." I do not think it will take an extra 7 months for pros to be able to start playing profitably again. That minor point aside, as far as online poker goes, your statement in bold is true. You do not know how much I wish it were otherwise, nor how much the PPA fought to make it otherwise. What you are seeing is the limits of the PPA's ability to influence events at this time. We have some real influence, but it should be clear that other interests have far more influence than us. One absolute limitation on our part is the ...

Republicans suck...
Passing legislation at the Federal level will undeniably require us to make concessions. As this whole process has shown, it is likely to take some very serious and very painful concessions. The concessions they are forcing on us are a high price indeed. I would agree they are a "pile of crap." And its a pile we are being told to eat. But the bill itself is not a pile of crap or of course we would never suggest accepting it. The bill does create what we want: and openly legal, consumer protected, US online poker market with excellent competition. The pile of crap, the concessions, are what ...

Update From PPA on Bill Status and Discussion RE "Freeze"
There is no question this is true. And the PPA fought and fought to make the blackout period shorter. In the end all we could get for folks like you was a 60 grace period before the blackout went into effect. Grinders like yourself (and I do not use that word in any negative way) need to understand just how precarious your position is. This whole thing should be a wake up call to all of you: the status quo will break someday, states will pass laws that will hurt you someday, and/or another bill with a "bitter pill" (maybe even a worse one) may move through Congress someday. I hate to say ...

Update From PPA on Bill Status and Discussion RE "Freeze"
The PPA has SOME pull in this process, but not enough to force major changes or stop the other more powerful interests from getting what they want. Sad but true. PPA has just over a million members. About 10% of those members are truly involved and active. In a country of over 200 million adult voters, having .5% of them is something. But it is not near enough to dictate results. You have to play the hand you are dealt. This bill, bad as it is, would have been even worse without the PPA (longer blackout, no grace period to stop play, and criminal penalties for players who play on unlicensed ...

Is there hope? Article in WSJ about poker legislation
Where did I, or anyone else from the PPA, call this bill a "victory"' This bill is nasty f---ing product of how you have to take and give to get anything in modern US politics. These bad parts are not there because the PPA wanted them or agreed to them. They are there because certain Senators insisted, even after extensive discussion and negotiation, that they be there or the Senator would take every step to block the bill (which is easy for a US Senator to do). I don't like this deal. It is a far higher price than is fair. AND PLEASE DO NOT CLAIM I SAID ANYTHING DIFFERENT. I have said that ...

Is there hope? Article in WSJ about poker legislation
He is basically right, but I am limited in telling just who insisted on this punishment at this time. I won't be silent forever, but I don't want to say anything before the hand is over and the dealing has stopped. Of course it would be possible to have a shorter time. We fought for NO MORE than 30/60 days. Instead we got 30 days before play has to stop. Sorry. Skallagrim Lack of International play, at least for the first 3 years, is a big issue, I agree. But it also a complex issue. International trade agreements and jurisdiction and all that. All hope that will be settled eventually, ...

Is there hope? Article in WSJ about poker legislation
Whether this proposed bill actually becomes law is still a very open question. Most put the chance at less that 50%. But as we poker players know all too well, a less than 50% chance is hardly a guarantee it wont happen. This bill is the product of an extensive amount of negotiation between the various interest involved (including the PPA, the casinos, the sites, the NFL, the banks, and so on) and also even with prior opponents of internet poker. Getting all those interests to agree on something required some very painful compromises. The worst part of the bill is contained the transition ...

What will you do if....
To be clear, the 20% tax is on the sites take (rake + tournament fees + any other kind of fee to play), not the players deposits. Given the lower operating costs gained by an openly legal market, and the open (to one degree or another) competition, few expect the tax provision of this bill to have much effect. In fact a lot of folks think total rake (i.e., deduct promotions and bonuses) may actually go down a bit. The transition period will be tough. The final details are still under negotiation, but some kind of transition period is inevitable. It will happen in the following manner if the ...

Sen. Reid's office making a move
The "bill" that is going around is an initial draft from last month. Since that time a lot of effort has been expended by the PPA and its allies to address the provisions that make the transition period potentially "disastrous" for online pros. In fact my understanding is that those efforts are still ongoing as I post this Saturday morning. I have also been told that a good number of the provisions that make the transition period difficult will be changed for the better, but I have yet to see actual specific changes. Ultimately though, there is no doubt that the transition period will be ...

Illinois pros getting sued holy wow!!
Hi folks, Skallagrim from the PPA's Litigation Support Network chiming in: 1) As TE said, the PPA is well aware of this case and is in the process of working with the players to help find them legal representation and to assist in their defense of this case. 2) A number of states have laws that specifically allow folks to sue to recover their "gambling" losses if they lost in an "unlicensed" game. The laws vary a good bit from state to state. The key to this lawsuit is the ability of a 3rd party (i.e. someone who was not playing in the game at all) to sue for money. If you live in such a ...

PokerStars to Stop Serving Washington State Residents
The PPA will not give up this fight, that I guarantee; the law is just too outrageous to ignore. Whether a ballot initiative will be one of the things we decide to move forward on is still being considered and discussed. But let me say this, because it applies to a lot of things: why do you need to wait for the PPA to start working on this as an option' The PPA has limited resources and that is one of the things we have to consider while deciding our next move. But it is far more likely that the PPA will get behind and back a ballot initiative if folks in WA start organizing themselves and ...

PokerStars to Stop Serving Washington State Residents
I do not find fault with PS decision here. I don't like it, I wish it were otherwise, but I fully understand it. Lee Rousso, the PPA, PS and others fought this law. And the law won (at least so far). PS has always held itself out to be company that complies with the law. It has also acted according to its lawyers' view of the law when the law is unclear. As a matter of WA state law, the law is no longer unclear. This is not the end of the matter, though, not by any means. The outrageous nature of this law (up to 5 years in prison for having the audacity to play poker online rather than in a ...

Poker Players Alliance Disappointed in Today’s Washington State Supreme Court Ruling
The "crime", from the point of view of WA state legislators, is that you are spending you personal money in a place that does not give them a kickback. You can play all the poker you want at the WA casinos (where you will pay 10% rake and play no games less than $1-2) and you can bet all you want over the internet so long as its done on Horse racing through WA licensed sites. IOW, the WA thought making you play only at WA businesses was important enough to threaten you with 5 years in prison for playing poker over the internet. That the WA supreme court upheld this law is only one of the ...

Re:US gambling Laws
The issues and arguments around the question of whether playing online poker violates a state law or not are very complex. I wrote a very long, admittedly, post about the subject. It is stickied at the top of this forum. The only answer to this question that can be given in a short post is this: no one knows for certain. If you want to know why no one knows for certain, you have to read the long posts, sorry. Skallagrim

Re:Seeking information about Poker sites and Fraudulent Activity, as well as casinobookie.com
It would seem to me to be far more important to be able to show that your husband did not take the funds from his employer. What a thief does with stolen funds is usually irrelevant to his status as a thief.

Sorry, I think you need to help yourself. I have no problem getting MY account history from any site I play on. I do not think it would be different for your husband. However, other people getting my account information, like, for example, police departments and angry, soon-to-be ex-wives, is something I am very glad is difficult.

Re:Cashout question...
Sorry, but this is not correct tax information. The IRS clearly considers the money as yours the moment you have won it, never the moment you withdraw it. To do your taxes accurately you need to keep track of the results of each of your playing "sessions." The total of your winning sessions is income, the total of you losing sessions is an itemized deduction up to the amount of winnings. The rules are slightly but significantly different if you file as pro-player; but you should not be doing that without a personal tax adviser. Skallagrim
