Place your bets, when will it get solved? I think federal legislation is roughly a coin flip in the lame duck session (the session of Congress following the November elections). I believe the DoJ statement on their interpretation of the scope of the Wire Act will help push Congress to take control of this. If nothing passes federally, I believe we'll see it go state-by-state as Dan described. The best thing we can do right now to increase our chances is to participate in the Poker Daily Action Plan (here). Posted in: Poker Legislation |

White House View on Online Poker (May 18, 2012) Here's what I said about this in the PPA member update (here): After nearly eight months, the Obama administration responded to PPA’s We the People petition to license online poker. Deputy Director of the National Economic Council Brian Deese issued a four-paragraph response on the issue (read the response here). I believe the response to be excellent for us in that it affirms the December Justice Department statement on the scope of the Wire Act as limited to wagers on sporting events or contests – and not poker. Needless to say, that is certainly welcome news! I thank everyone who ... Posted in: Poker Legislation |

The family & religious groups that pushed for UIGEA demanding a federal ban! I wrote to one of my congressman's staffers: Hi *****, I hope all is well. I wanted to apprise the congressman’s office of a letter some anti-gaming groups just sent to Speaker Boehner, which you’ll find attached. While no one honestly thinks Congress will pass legislation banning all online gaming – especially in the short time window that is available (prior to states authorizing intrastate gaming) – it is disturbing in the larger context. These are groups that purport to speak for conservatism, yet they are actively advocating bigger government, executive branch expansion, and ... Posted in: Poker Legislation |

The family & religious groups that pushed for UIGEA demanding a federal ban! In this letter, this group advocated for big government, executive branch expansion, and reduced states' rights. When they support big government for things they want, they weaken their argument for limited government, as it's clear they merely seek to limit government to things they like. My congressman, Geoff Davis (R-KY), sponsored the REINS Act, which seeks to reduce the ability of the executive branch to expand the scope. I wonder how he'll react to this letter. He knows my opinion. I wrote a column in support of REINS that he ran on his website: . Posted in: Poker Legislation |

The family & religious groups that pushed for UIGEA demanding a federal ban! The groups that pushed for UIGEA are, in the wake of the DoJ announcement on their interpretation of the scope of the Wire Act, seeking a federal ban on online poker and gaming!! We'd better all be sure to speak up here and do our part to ensure that our reps on Capitol Hill hear from us. If YOU don't participate, you are allowing these groups to claim that they speak for you. Don't let them speak for you. Visit the Poker Daily Action Plan thread and be sure to let Congress know that we demand our right to play and, by doing so, ensure that they know that there's no chance of any ... The Southern Baptist Convention cites PPA Yes, we should to the degree that we are focusing on their concerns and on what they want. Trying to convince them that they are wrong on the broader issue would be unlikely to work. The Southern Baptist Convention cites PPA Sun Tzu said, "know your enemy" (or, more accurately, he said, "So it is said that if you know your enemies and know yourself, you can win a hundred battles without a single loss."). While I don't want to call FoF or anyone a literal "enemy," they are obviously an adversary on this issue, so we ought to apply this principle here. Chad Hills of Focus on the Family responded to poker players in detail in the comments at . I encourage everyone to read through his posts. Hills provides a lot of information that we can use on how they feel about the issue. It’s like sonar. We put our message ... Posted in: Poker Legislation |
