4/14 KY Derby Preps Discussion asdfasdfasdfasdf$$%%^& Nothing better than having 4/6 in the first leg of a pick 5 and still missing it. Argh. Terrible ride by Leparoux aboard Tapitsfly. Should have been breezing on the lead with how slow they went. Oh well... FTR here's my ticket (not that it matters now...) 0.50 P5 for $48 8: 2,3,4,6 9: 1,2,5,7 10: 1,3,4,7 11: 1,6 12: 6 Posted in: Off Topic |

4/14 KY Derby Preps Discussion The last two major pieces of the Derby puzzle will be run today, both with huge fields. Bluegrass Stakes @ Keeneland: Hansen towers over this field on paper, but keep in mind that it's a prep race, and that it is unlikely that he will be all out to win in this spot. Further complicating the picture is the presence of a tremendous amount of (mostly cheap) speed types, and a track bias that up to this point in the meet seems to be favoring stalkers/closers in 9 furlong races. For those reasons, Dale Romans' Dullahan seems playable as a horse that could make a big improvement and benefit from ... Posted in: Off Topic |

Changing careers @ 32y/o You should become a teacher. It's obviously super easy (i.e. "those who can't do...teach), plus you only have to work 9 months a year. You're out everyday at 3 o'clock to hit the golf course. On top of that, you get your hands on those Cadillac benefits. You'll have to deal with being called a union thug, but I'm sure you'll get over it. Seems like a no-brainer. Not sure why people aren't lining up for this gig. GL Posted in: Off Topic |

How far is your commute? I drive 22 miles each way to work, so not exactly an apples to apples comparison, but mine also takes about 22 minutes, and is mostly highway. I actually really like it. Gives me some time to decompress/process what happened at work that day in the afternoon, and prepare for the day in the morning. My commute rarely has traffic issues, so it's very predictable. I hate being in traffic, so it works for me. I think you'd find that you'd really get used to the mileage and actually appreciate the time to yourself before you get home to be dad/husband/etc. Posted in: Off Topic |

March 3rd Pony Action Sorry...a bit late to this party. Near miss of the year for me yesterday...here's my ticket from the 500K GTD P4: 10$ P4: cost = $80 R8: 3,4,10,11 R9: 5,7 R10: 1 R11: 3 4 wins the first leg (10.80, the second betting choice) just nosing the 3 (19-1). So I'm alive...3 would have been great. 5 wins the second leg (7.00), which helps as the 7 was a logical single for many. Still alive... 1 gets nosed in the third leg by Willyconker. My bad, just didn't go deep enough. Thought Mr. Commons had it. 3 romps in the 4th leg (9.20). A nose away from a decent payday, and if the 3 ... Posted in: Off Topic |

San Diego Vacation advice Tons of great advice already. You'll have a blast being out there in August. I'd reiterate that Del Mar (the racetrack) will be a must, the Wild Animal Park is incredible (more fun than the Zoo for my money), and your kids will enjoy Sea World. Roberto's for sure. Lots of good little independent restaurants...for example, one of my favorites (lived in Encinitas for a couple years) is Calypso Cafe. Unreal food, great vibe, live music, etc... You'll have a great time. Posted in: Off Topic |

Anyone play intrade markets? (GOP Nominee) LOTS of grassroots talk/momentum here in Michigan involving getting Democrats/people who otherwise do not care out to vote for Santorum. Could be an interesting dynamic. If I recall correctly, GW Bush had the same problem in Michigan (he famously blamed Democrats for selecting McCain). Romney made some pretty harsh comments about the Big 3 Bailouts, and those chickens are coming home to roost as well. As bat-shit crazy as Santorum appears, I think I agree with your assessment that he's the favorite here in Michigan, and will win unless Romney decides to get into serious attack-mode. Pick 6 Carryover Interest? I'm not interested in joining forces, but wish you (and anyone else playing) good luck tomorrow, and will certainly be heavily invested in this pool to try and catch lightning in a bottle. I am a bit bummed, as I had 3 live horses in the Derby to hit the pick 5 (probables were 118K, 220K, and 320K), but obviously ran 2nd and 3rd. Good luck tomorrow sir. Maybe post your ticket for fun' Posted in: Off Topic |

"I take the President at his word..." I agree that Obama likely loves it, but for completely different reasons. There are a whole slew of legitimate reasons to be critical of Obama. Each time someone chooses to spend their precious "air time" talking about this, they a) cost themselves an opportunity to make an apt and pointed criticism and b) look like an idiot to most of the populace. "I take the President at his word..." I never am quite sure if you're just some elaborate level, so if so...vwp again and again. You do realize the "average federal worker" (employed by places like NASA, the FBI, etc) has advanced technical training, progressive work experience, and expertise in a given field as compared to the "average private employee" (many of whom work at places like McDonalds and Wal-Mart and possess little to no post-secondary education)' Do you see why those "averages" probably should show a healthy dissonance' Posted in: Off Topic |

Personal Finance Question for OT I would be cautious primarily of the giant fees they are going to try and tack onto the loan. How much equity do you have in your home' When's the last time you had your home appraised (for real, not the bullshit kind when they re-fi your home)' Are you happy in your home, or planning to move and desiring some flexibility with your ability to sell' It kind of depends is the answer, I guess. Lots of variables. Can't hurt to check it out, though. Posted in: Off Topic |

401k advice ITT 457b's have some distinct advantages that make them attractive options, so if it's affordable, I'd go that route once you're through maxing out your match. Any principled conservs want to talk about what GOP Gov Snyder is doing in Michigan? Snyder's proposed budget includes a per/pupil cut of $470. It is estimated that this cut, in concert with existing calamitous budgetary conditions (such as the funding of education being partially tied to the state sales tax, which obviously was done without forethought of such things as recessions), will make roughly 50% of the school districts in Michigan insolvent financially. So a state that is completely broke (and getting more and more so each year) is going to suddenly take over the management of half of the school districts in Michigan' Aren't you libertarian guys against big ...
