US govt wants a bigger slice of the apple pie Yeah I heard an economist spout off the $140k number and thats why I said it, I'm not sure what other compensation he was referring to so we can just use the $85k/year number. It's not so ridiculous in that the workers were virtually paid in Gold, as that is what was backing their money. You could take your $25/week to the government and they would hand you an ounce of Gold. The government will spout off their own inflation numbers but the purchasing power of Gold is fairly constant. The whole point is that taxing corporations and imposing regulations on them is counter-productive as they ... Posted in: Off Topic |

Obama Paid A Lower Tax Rate Than His Secretary Probably not, but for right now it's about the movement. A good Libertarian candidate in 2016 is a real possibility. I think it's important for Ron Paul supporters to write him in instead of sitting out this election. If he can get 5-10% of the vote in the general election without being on the ballot that will send a clear message to the GOP. The idea of voting for either Romney or Obama makes me sick, and I'm not going to go with the lesser of two evils this time around like I did in 08. Posted in: Off Topic |

US govt wants a bigger slice of the apple pie I was a little off on the valuation, but in 1905, money was worth gold. Gold was $25/ounce so a worker could buy one ounce of gold per week. Today gold is around $1,650/ounce which means that auto workers at Ford in1905 made the equivalent of about $85K/year tax free. Posted in: Off Topic |

Obama Paid A Lower Tax Rate Than His Secretary It's income but the point is that corporations are people in that when you raise taxes on a corporation, the corporation in effect passes this on to their customers and shareholders. In effect, the shareholders of a company get taxed as the corporation at 35%, and then 15% when they see the dividends or distributions. Income taxes in general are counter productive and taxing investments will lower the rate of investment and destroy jobs. The real issue should be the massive amount of government spending, not trying to squeeze an extra couple billion out of the 1%. Posted in: Off Topic |

Obama Paid A Lower Tax Rate Than His Secretary What you are missing though is that this money was already effectively taxed at 35% to the corporation. This is why Warren Buffet is full of shit, he pays a higher rate than his secretary because he makes the majority of his money as a corporation (Berkshire Hathaway) in which he pays 35%. The Buffet Rule would only apply to 1% of his income. If we lowered the corporate tax rate to 0% like we should we could talk about increasing the capital gains tax rate. Posted in: Off Topic |

US govt wants a bigger slice of the apple pie Thanks, dont care.. Yes I was right about the $5 a day, wrong about the valuation, but it was still an unprecedented wage in that time and it was made possible because of the lack of government regulation. Posted in: Off Topic |

US govt wants a bigger slice of the apple pie Capitalism is not perfect, but it is the most perfect system that we have come up with to date, and government certainty is not a solution. Do you know that in the early 20th century ford paid their workers $5/day (thats more than $150k/year in todays dollars) after taxes' They were able to do this because the cost of all the govt regulation did not bog them down. Workers are free to work for whomever they want, and if they are not being paid a fair wage or are working in unsafe conditions they are free to not work there, this is the fairest system that there is. A company that can set up ... Posted in: Off Topic |

US govt wants a bigger slice of the apple pie But why do you hold this opinion when you cannot name a historical example of a market being "too free"' Did we have problems with the quality of food before the FDA' You can name a government agency and I can show you how they have made things worse. I am not saying there is no place for government, but the government should have extremely limited powers appointed by the constitution. If anything, all of these specific powers that people want to give to the federal government should be solved at the state level. The states were originally set up so that if you didn't like the way things ... Posted in: Off Topic |

US govt wants a bigger slice of the apple pie Well we know that they would do this faster because their entire business depends on it. Government can take as long as they want because they have a monopoly, in a free market you would have competition that is keeping you on your toes. The truth is that in a free market you would not need the OK to bring a new drug to market, but you would be smart to wait for it to become "free market FDA approved" or something like that and such companies would no doubt exist as they are providing a value to society. To turn the N/S Korea example back onto you, can you tell me an industry or situation ... Posted in: Off Topic |

Changing careers @ 32y/o I didn't read through all of this thread but at the Bank I work at I've seen some people who are a bit older start at the Analyst level and work their way to a VP spot in 5 years if they show exceptional leadership abilities and the ability to see the big picture. Nothing wrong with taking a position that would likely be filled by a recent graduate if there are great opportunities for advancement. Good luck to you. Posted in: Off Topic |

US govt wants a bigger slice of the apple pie Becoming head of the "free market FDA" would be like starting any other company. You would compete against other companies and the one who is providing the best services would prevail. There would likely be multiple companies performing the same function and it would be pretty evident which one is not doing things the right way and they would be eliminated. I don't think your "taking time is inefficient" argument is valid. In a free market you have incentive to get your products and services out there as quickly as possible, so it is the most efficient form you can hope to achieve. When the ... Posted in: Off Topic |

US govt wants a bigger slice of the apple pie That wasn't easy to follow haha. You pretty much answered your own question in that the free market will get rid of the bad milk sellers and it will do the same thing with companies who give bad advice... This example you gave is kind of weird but I would like to point out that the FDA, like any other government agency, is widely inefficient and takes bribes just like you've described. I'm not sure if you are suggesting that government agencies aren't subject to bribes, but in a free market these companies wouldn't last. Think of the economy as if it were ebay, when sellers get too much ... Posted in: Off Topic |

US govt wants a bigger slice of the apple pie Yes, the entire point is that the government should not have the power to be bought/given out. If we take the power away from the government and let the free market do it's work we get rid of almost every problem facing this country. Posted in: Off Topic |

Red Lobster: biggest gap between appearance and reality? I worked in the kitchen at red lobster (among many other restaurants in my life) and I can safely say it was the cleanest kitchen you could ever find. Super sanitary, I just don't eat there because it is expensive. The one I worked at was way too anal about cleanliness. Posted in: Off Topic |
